Food food food.
炉: brazier, used for burning fragrance. Most braziers are made out of metal. The one from the novel has a golden beast and cranes.
八宝乌鸡汤: Eight Treasures chicken soup, made with eight types of Chinese medicinal herbs.
荠菜山鸡片: pheasant (or wild chicken) with shepherd’s purse
青笋宝猪肚条: celtuce and pig stomach
万福(wangfu): formal greeting performed by females. It is a bow with the head lowered, arms at the sides and knees bent.
I’m loving this story so far! And the translation pace 😍. Are you thinking of keeping it this fast?
Side note: Your “lettuce” is a little off.
One of the real names is celtuce. It is also called Chinese Lettuce, Asparagus lettuce and lots of other things. I had to check wiki myself when I translated. 😀
Oh my! I’m sorry about that….very interesting name, a rearrangement of lettuce too
Thank you so much!! 😘😘
Thank you for the supplement pages. Now things begin to make sense. Ha Ha. Truly enjoyable.
Thank you….love all the supplements…
Do you have any pictures on the male formal greetings? Throughout the story the male greets with raising their hand in a fist. I can’t picture the gesture.. so if you have an example.. thanks!
Type bowing with folded hands into google. I use the fist, or cupped fist because I find it is a more accurate descriptor of the action but folded hands is more common.
Just making sure its the one where one hand is in a fist and the other is on top of it? Another question, sorry! In the story it says da long dynasty, is it an actual dynasty or fictional? I couldn’t find anything about it online..
Thank you so much!
It is fictional :).
Oh my god! I just deliscovered your website and I must say, your translations are very detailed and the footnotes are exquisite. And you even have supplements??! You are spoiling this reader and giving us much-needed context. Thank you for all your hardwork. I can roughly read Chinese but it is a little slow for me (I think in English). Reading your blog has been very helpful and I learnt a lot from your translations and footnotes. I also learnt many things about the culture and the practices of that time. Thank you! 😀
Omg, is it possible for you to be less perfect?? <3 <3 <3 Thank you so much !! This is amazing !!
