Chapter Twenty Six People Are Not the Same, Roads Are Not the Same

When it came to clothing and adornments, women would always have many words. Which place had the best rouge, which place had the most exquisite hairpins, which place had the best embroiders. In conclusion, the topic was limitless.

The three wangfei present were different in their styles of dress. Ning Wang Fei was dignified and staid. An embroidered goose-yellow dress covered with a pure white cape. The hair was styled into a yuanbaoji [1]and set off with a whole set of jewelled toumian. [2] She looked dignified yet noble. Rui Wang Fei didn’t have a cape but wore a silver mouse fur coat. She had a subdued duowoji,[3] beautiful and graceful with a hint of scholarliness.

Qu Qing Ju’s appearance was the best among the three of them. What she wore wasn’t as dignified as Ning Wang Fei or as scholarly as Rui Wang Fei. She was breathtaking, was what the women present thought. No wonder Duan wang ye would get angry on her behalf at Chang De Gong Fu. If any newly married wife had such a beauty, not many men would not favour her at all.

Er dimei, the butterflies and peony embroidered on the edge of this dress is very beautiful,” Wei Qing E’s eyes swept over the hem of the dress Qu Qing Ju wore that was revealed under the cape, “At a glance, it seems almost alive.”

Saosao is too nice. There’s a yahuan that serves on by my side. When it isn’t busy, she likes to work on this kind of things,” Qu Qing Ju raised an eyebrow, “I normally don’t use any other embroidery-women so I let them play among themselves. It’s fine as long as I can wear it out the door.”

“Everybody else sitting here also have some embroidery-women but er sao is too modest. I think this dress is extremely beautiful.” Qin Bai Lu complimented Qu Qing Ju but inside she thought this ersao was too shallow. No matter how much care she took with her clothing, without any scholarly and artistic talent, how was she different from the common people?

The others furen present complimented the three, their words along the lines of noble, beautiful, magnificent or dignified . Along the way, they criticized themselves to create a contrast. To them, admiring the blossoms wasn’t the most important. What was important was that these three were happy. Then they have almost completely fulfilled their duty at this plum-blossom banquet.

Wei Qing E was the eldest among the three so she held herself as the most steady and when talking with Qu Qing Ju and Qin Bai Lu, her voice held a hint of the affection elders had for those younger. She waited for the officials’ wives to finish flattering them and interrupted: “All of you should not compliment these two anymore. Otherwise, they would get bashful.”

The chenfu laughed and replied that they only said the truth, it wasn’t complimenting them.

Qu Qing Ju looked at this room full of women. Each person had the most natural smile, as though each was happier than the next. At this time, she couldn’t help but feel tired for these people but thinking that when these people returned home, they would naturally have others to flatter them, she could only sigh to herself. It was lucky that she hadn’t become a wife of a common man. Otherwise, it would be even more difficult to live in this kind of era and social conventions.

Er sao, I heard that the Duchess of Chang De fell sick in the past few days. She couldn’t even manage to attend today’s banquet. How is she now?” Qin Bai Lu looked at Qu Qing Ju who seemed to be always smiling with the corners of her eyes and suddenly asked, “The third young lady of the fu even seemed to have fallen ill due to caring for her mother?”

Qu Qing Ju’s eyebrows moved slightly, the mirth at the corner of her eyes not diminishing: “Really?”

Er sao didn’t know?” Qin Bai Lu asked with a hint of shock, “It seems like I asked the wrong person.”

Putting down the teacup in her hand, Qu Qing Ju pushed the teacup to one side, “Dimei’s eyes and ears are as intelligent as expected. Er sao thanks you for your notice.” Finishing, she stood, “It seems that this snow has stopped already. Dimei is so hospitable that I shouldn’t leave but there is much to do at the fu so er sao will leave first.” Finishing, she didn’t care to see what expression Qin Bai Lu revealed and bowed slightly to Wei Qing E. She turned and left, supporting herself on Mu Jin’s hand.

Everybody present stopped in shock and quickly stood to bid farewell to find that Duan Wang Fei had already passed the door.

Qin Bai Lu hadn’t thought that Qu Qing Ju would just stand up and leave. She had been smiling just a second ago. Her expression had instantaneously changed. Her own face was frozen in irritation that somebody had insulted her and it took her a while to suppress the rage.

Wei Qing E smiled and stood. She also unhesitatingly bid her farewells. She clearly didn’t desire to remain at this place to give honor to Qin Bai Lu. Ning Wang might not be close to He Heng, but it was better than with He Yuan. Why would she side with Qin Bai Lu and offend Qu Qing Ju?

When the two wang fei left, half of the crowd of noblewomen continuously left, leaving behind only the members of the families that had sided with He Yuan.

Wang fei, this Duan Wang Fei is too straightforward,” The yahuan that supported Wei Qing E exclaimed in a quiet voice, “Nubi saw that Rui Wang Fei’s expression even changed.”

“Change is good. She keeps doing her act of the talented woman, it’s so distasteful,” When Wei Qing E came out of the pavilion, she mocked, “This entire city, who doesn’t know that the second Duchess of Chang De[4] treated Duan Wang Fei badly. Qin Bai Lu was clearly accusing Qu Qing Ju of being unfilial. She was purposefully embarrassing Qu Qing Ju.”

“Even so, but the way Duan Wang Fei left, wouldn’t people say she is unfilial?” The yahuan looked at the surrounding and seeing no one around, she quipped, “I hadn’t thought that Duan Wang Fei’s personality was like this.”

“Who doesn’t have sore spots,” Wei Qing E expressionlessly stepped on the snow, “All in the Jing City knows that, as a stepmother, the second Duchess of Chang De was not loving. Qu Qing Ju dares to do so, she isn’t afraid of being talked about. Also, in Jing City, who would, for a second Duchess of Changde, criticize a wang fei? A member of the Imperial Family, a right is right, but a wrong is still right. Didn’t you see that Duan Wang Fei was very respectful to the Marchioness of Xiang Qing?

Thinking that she was experienced after reading those stupid books? Wei Qing E smiled coldly. From her point of view, Qin Bai Lu clearly was a pedant. Were those words what she, as a dimei, could say to her saozi? No wonder Qu Qing Ju mocked Qin Bai Lu for being intelligent with her eyes and ears. After what happened today, tomorrow the rumor would be that Rui Wang Fu knew everything that occurred in the City of Jing.

Whose home didn’t have things that people shouldn’t see? In the future, the officials in Jing would be at least wary of Rui Wang Fu. She was happy to spectate at the chaos. But Qu Qing Ju had guts, to turn and leave. Not just anyone would have the boldness.

At this time, the sedan carrying Qu Qing Ju was slowly making its way to the front gate. Qu Qing Ju sat in the sedan without the anger that everybody else was imagining. At the beginning, she had the decree that if you who wouldn’t let me be happy, then I would make it difficult for you. She dared to leave and she wasn’t afraid of becoming enemies with Qin Bai Lu. Additionally, even if she didn’t storm off, the two of them wouldn’t have good relations in the future.

The swaying and bouncing sedan suddenly stopped. Qu Qing Ju heard the servants outside kneel and voice a greeting. She slightly pulled back the window curtain and saw a person wearing a white cloak with a taijian accompanying him, standing five paces away from the sedan.

This person was Rui Wang He Yuan. Qu Qing Ju instantly let go of the curtain in her hand, and sat back in the sedan without a word.

He Yuan saw the slight movement of the curtain on the sedan and slightly bowed at the waist: “Greetings to er sao.”

San shu is too courteous.” Qu Qing Ju didn’t have any interest in men that was as beautiful as a woman and faintly returned, “Thanks for your hospitality today, but it is late, so farewell.”

“Farewell er sao,” He Yuan place his hand behind his back and looked at the sedan sway and bounce as it left. Then he saw a young taijian quickly run over.

Wang ye, one of the gatekeepers just reported that Duan wang ye’s sedan has stopped at the gate but he doesn’t know why it hasn’t entered.”

Turning to look at the far-away sedan, He Yuan snorted: “Since ben wang’s good brother isn’t entering the fu, ben wang won’t disturb him.” He actually came personally to pick her up. Did this He Heng get addicted to pretending to be a romantic?

Just as he finished, he saw a few more sedans coming from the direction of the plum forest. He turned and walked to the side, avoiding the sedans of the womenfolk. Knowing that Qin Bai Lu had invited the women to today’s banquet, he didn’t have any objections. But he looked down on his wang fei’s love for admiring plum blossoms in a snowstorm. No wonder people said the virtue of a woman was to have no talents. Women who read too many books, they were so picky. Was it impossible to admire plum blossoms at some other time?

Luo shi sat in the sedan and thought back to what had happened at the banquet. She felt that her niece seemed different than before. Her words were as few as in the past, but the aura she exuded had become stronger. It seemed that Duan wang ye did treat her well. Otherwise, her niece wouldn’t have the bravery to storm away to embarrassed Rui Wang Fei.

The sedan stopped inside the main gate and Luo shi came out. She found many of the furen were standing at the spot as though they were waiting for something.

“What’s going on?” She walked towards a furen that she had good relations with and asked in a light voice, “Why aren’t they leaving?”

“Duan wang ye’s sedan is outside,” This furen raised her chin and motioned for her to look at the main gate. She suddenly smiled and teased, “I think that Duan Wang really cares for your niece.”

Luo shi, upon hearing this, looked at the gate and saw her niece take Duan Wang’s hand to enter the sedan. That red cloak dragging over the white snow was especially beautiful.

Seeing that Duan Wang waited for her niece to sit down before he followed, Luo shi took back her gaze. Under the gazes that the women surrounding her sent over, the smile on her face was the same as any other day.

Wei Qing E held her servant’s hand as she stood outside the gate. Seeing Duan Wang Fu’s sedan being carried far away, her expression was distant. For Ning Wang Fu, she poured her heart in, but she hadn’t seen wang ye treat her this way. Qu Qing Ju, other than her exceptional appearance, was she as good as her in any area? Could it be that everything she had done, it wasn’t enough to surpass Qu Qing Ju’s gorgeous dress?

Even that cloak that Qu Qing Ju carelessly dragged on the snow, it was made from the finest Yun brocade and sewn with silk on the inside. When it touched water, it would wrinkle. Just this one cloak, it would cost several hundreds of gold. Now that this cloak has been dragged in the snow, naturally it couldn’t be worn anymore.

The wang fu naturally didn’t care about the money, but she was used to running a household and everything used in the household was budgeted. She herself wasn’t used to such extravagance. As the wife, why would she copy those qieshi and spend all her attention on clothing and makeup?

Wang fei?” The yahuan beside her saw she hadn’t moved and worriedly looked at her.

“Let’s go,” Wei Qing E smiled. She didn’t have to compete with Qu Qing Ju. When He Heng was tired of her, her beautiful dress would become lavishness and wastefulness. Her conduct will become willfulness and pretension. And she herself didn’t need this time of magnificence. No matter what time and place, she was always the most dignified and virtuous Ning Wang Fei.

This was the road that the wives of the Imperial Family should walk.

[1] 元宝髻: a style of hair with the hair gathered in a topknot

[2] 头面: ornaments for hair. The specific style would vary by the dynasty.

[3] 堕倭髻: a hairstyle where the hair is gathered in a knot at one side of the head near the top. It has been described as “on the edge of falling off”.

[4] The “second” refers to the fact she is the second wife of the Duke of Changde, not the original wife.

  1. Thanks for the update~! He Yuan will see in the future that his brother wasn’t playing at being romantic =D Also Ning Wang Fei is bound for disappointment if she thinks He Heng will get tired of QQJ. Looking forward to the next chapter ^-^

    1. Ning Wang Fei doesn’t understand Qu Qing Ju and He Heng because she bases everything off her own husband.

  2. Three women, each with different dispositions but all probably eying to be the next empress…who will prevail?…I’m rooting for QQJ because she’s the protagonist but really, I’m empressed with her guts…and cunning…and I also love that HH is doting on her now. How she strengthens and sustain these feelings and attention are what I look forward to see…thanks a lot for this update…..

  3. I have to disagree with Wei Qing E. She SHOULD place more effort and attention on her makeup and clothing and prettying herself up. Being proper and boring isn’t going to win her any points with Ning Wang. Just because she’s a wife doesn’t mean she should start neglecting her appearance. Even in modern times, I see a lot of married women “let themselves go” after marriage, by not paying attention to their appearance and no longer dressing up, assuming that they have already landed their “catch” and thus no longer need to doll themselves up. That is a fatal mistake. When you no longer make yourself desirable, why would your husband continue to find you captivating? So I completely agree with Qu Qing Ju’s approach here. Even though she’s married, she continues to make herself outstanding to please herself, and as a side benefit, to please He Heng.

I have stopped listening ahead using Bing Translator after Chapter 40 due to lack of time, so I don’t know how the story will end up. However, is it just me, or do I detect a bit of Rui Wang’s interest in Qu Qing Ju? I know they have very little scenes together, but during the two times they have met so far, Rui Wang seems to be observing Qu Qing Ju quite intensely, as if she intrigues him. I don’t see him doing that to Wei Qing E, for example. I may be over-interpreting the scenes, though.

    1. With Wei Qing E, you have to remember that she’s born and bred in this era. “Qie are favored, wives are respected”. She’s not a mat, and it’s not that she doesn’t “pretty” herself up, it’s that she looks down at Qu Qing Ju for taking it to the extreme. Also, when the man doesn’t love you, you have less motivation to be pretty. Wei Qing E is playing a pragmatic game where she and Ning Wang are like business partners. She takes care of his home, he takes care of the outside

      1. I can definitely see Wei Qing E and Ning Wang as business partners, but unfortunately, a marriage is not quite like running a business together. For someone as smart as Wei Qing E, I am sure she understands that. He Heng is not in love with Qu Qing Ju (at least not at this time), and yet, Qing Ju dolls herself up. Perhaps it’s also just her personality to like to make herself look magnificent, but it doesn’t hurt to mesmerize the husband and try to make him fall in love with her. As shown in this story, love is not at first sight but is nurtured. To be fair, though there is not much description on Wei Qing E’s looks, I get the feeling that she is at most above average, whereas as Qing Ju is stunning. I know beauty is skin deep in this novel, but being eye candy for He Heng certainly helps Qing Ju, too.

      2. Yup. In my own mind, I think Wei Qing E tried that and found she couldn’t keep her husband anyways so she found a new way to be useful to him and could maintain her own position and that of her child. That’s why she thinks Qu Qing Ju will have to learn a lesson in the future.

      3. Thinking He Heng will stop favoring Qing Ju soon is being a bit presumptuous on Wei Qing E’s part, isn’t it? Qing Ju is not she, and He Heng is not Ning Wang. How does she know Qing Ju and He Heng will end up like her and Ning Wang? Plus, I detect a bit of bitterness and mean-spiritedness in Wei Qing E’s presumptions. It’s almost like she is hoping that QIng Ju will fall out of favor with He Heng, just so she, the know-it-all Wei Qing E, can smirk and say, “I told you so.” I guess misery loves company? I’m not so sure I like Wei Qing E, who pretends to be all smiles, but is actually hoping for Qing Ju’s downfall deep in her heart. At least Qin Bai Lu is mean and nasty and just shows it.

      4. Eh. Sorry I’m commenting 2 years later, but I’m reading this just now, and after seeing this discussion I just couldn’t keep myself quiet.

First of all, marriage IS (sorta) a business that you run together. It’s not for nothing in the birth chart it falls under the 7th house, that is the house of relationships, marriage, business partnerships etc.

Marriage, is first and foremost a partnership, yes, even till today. Of course, love might be one of the objectives, but it is not the only one. You marry so you can have a “stable” home, so you can someday have children, to share the difficulties of life, and even bills.
There is an objective to it (most often children), if it was just love, or something like physical, then why marry at all?
Even today, with many forms of relationships, if you’re marrying it is sorta implied you’ll be living together and probably having children someday (well, at least living together).

Second, I don’t know how it was in the East, but love, especially marrying for love was a 20th century invention here in the West, much thanks to Hollywood and it’s romanticized/glamourized version of love and marriage.

Not to say love didn’t happen, not saying, marrying for love didn’t happen at all. But it was that rare case/lucky occasion. It might happen, but it was far, very far from the standard.

You didn’t marry for love, (unless you were of lower class, in which it might happen, but very often other things contributed a lot more) you married for a better life. So you could have stability, so you wouldn’t die in the cold. So you could one day have children and your own home.
And not die a spinster, living with (and obeying) one’s relatives.

At most, you married because XXX was a decent man, and he (probably) wouldn’t beat you day in and day out.

(Again, not to say there weren’t cases of love and fancies, but being able to live was like 90% of the determinator)

And if you were a noble? Forget it. Marriage WAS business and that is it.
Starting from the dowry, to politic allegiances etc etc (to even the well being of the Nation in case of royals) it was a transaction.
You were basically sold in marriage.

And love? Good (great actually) if it happened, but other things, like respect were probably more important so you wouldn’t make each other’s live hell.

So yes, much probably the reason your husband married you, was, besides doing so was an advantage, because you were proper. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You knew how to dress, how to behave in public, to manage a household, and how to educate your future children. That was it.
You weren’t required to be good in bed, nobody would teach you about these things, actually, they weren’t even allowed to speak of it.

Actually, besides “which coulor, hairstyle, etc, looks better on you” I wonder if they even talked about how to get/please a man? (in the sense, act like this, don’t say that etc)
Because I can so see priests frowning and saying this was the devil working through womenly wiles.
(Sooo… better not to know much, lest you be accused of consorting with the devil, wizardry, or something else. *cough*)

So, you wanted a pretty thing to look at, or pleasure in bed, you got a lover, or a prostitute. (you being a man, that is. If you were a woman… Well, maybe the gardener if you had already given the sire some boys. And then pray they didn’t look like the gardener)

And this, all of this is in western culture, where you could only have one wife.
Imagine there where they could have N wifes, X concubines, and Z “consagrated” servants.

And like MC said previously, as first wife, you had to manage hubby, the house, the other women, and their children. (It must have been a nightmare).

You know, considering they COULD do all of this, and this was the normal mentality of the era/society, the way I see it, a man only sleeping with one woman for all of his life would speak more of him (his mentality, or him being naturally loyal) of him being madly in love with her.

Because even if he was so madly in love, he saw a pretty girl working from him, got curious how it’d be to be with another woman… And that was it. As long as she was made tongfang there was nothing to it.

Since it was not only normal, but even encouraged by society, a whim was all it took.

I’m not saying she shouldn’t dress up, be the most beautiful etc etc. That is also a weapon, and MC is making good use of it.
But when you are married for almost 20 years, has 20 or so children to keep an eye on, not mention everything else, and society is demanding all of this of you, but not being so alluring you keep your hubby only to you (quite the contrary), can you blame her?
(even though, in her case, she is rich and can have 4 servants just to look after her and make her beautiful.. The other women in the harem have just as much and don’t have many as responsabilities/problems as her – actually they are probably part of it)

I think this is what she is alluding to.
If they want fun, they can have any number or concubines. But for propriety, dignity and good behaviour and management skills they get a di wife. And as such, all the stress, obligation, discipline and standing they are thrown over you.

The whole setting is against you.
Again, I don’t know how it really is, but I’m guessing it’s only that one in 100 case (maybe less) that the wife can manage it.
And that is why, precisely, this sort of 1 against 100 history always was, and still is the favourite.

Think about all the stories of true love, or princesses finding love that are popular till today.
Now, all the cases of terrible royal marriages in which they were sorely unhappy to say the least, or of ppl marrying into a lower class and discovering it wasn’t all roses. Though it was historical, it was sadly too commonplace, and sheer reality to make a good story.

    2. I’m also curious on the Rui Wang interested in QQJ part.

      A bit of ****SPOILER**** ahead!

I google translated the rest of the chapters because I’m impatient lol, but in one of the epilogues, I think, Rui Wang’s wife discovered a painting of a woman sitting in a sedan lifting the curtain, she had black hair and her dress sleeves were red. I was thinking it can’t be a concubine b/c they can’t wear red. Also there were two scenes that I know of where Rui Wang saw QQJ in a sedan, one is here, the other is in chapter 70ish where she buys some spiced eggs, and QQJ likes red to wear red dresses.

Then on his deathbed he asked for a painting to be buried with him, it was a picture of a woman in a silk dress during the lantern festival. So it made me think that he is secretly in love with QQJ. If you could clarify that for me wychwe I’d be grateful >.> if not I’ll wait impatiently =D

      1. The simple answer is maybe. The hard answer… … is no, in my opinion. I don’t think he was in love with Qu Qing Ju, he was infatuated. It’s like how people will look up and admire movie stars but won’t really be in love because truly loving someone who you never interacted with is hard. He’s in love with what Qu Qing Ju represents, but I don’t think it’s love for her.

      2. Hmm, from what Lolli wrote, it would interesting to see how Rui Wang’s infatuation plays out in the rest of the story. Perhaps the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Plus, with a wife like Qin Bai Lu, it’s not difficult to see why Rui Wang would be more intrigued by the more beautiful and captivating Qu Qing Ju. Just personality-wise, Qing Ju wins hands down over Qin Bai Lu.

However, isn’t it scandalous to covet his older brother’s wife? Even in this era, it’s shocking, not to mention the very proper ancient times. If this infatuation is true, does anyone find out about it? What would the Emperor and Rui Wang’s consort mother say???

  4. Thanks for the new chapter 🙂

@Melanie: I think that if Rui Wang even thinks of it, he will turn his attentions away from QQJ since it would be quite shameful to be so obviously attracted to his sister-in-law…..at least, that’s how I think of it since he’s quite arrogant and full of pride.

    1. Hmm, so Rui Wang is unconsciously infatuated or possibly in love with Qu Qing Ju but doesn’t realize it himself because it is such a scandalous notion? Aren’t Rui Wang and Duan Wang only a few months apart in age? I guess the brothers are more similar in their tastes in women than they are willing to admit. 🙂

Somebody mentioned in an earlier chapter that it would be cool if the women could swap husbands. I think it is an interesting idea. What would happen if Qing Ju were given to Rui Wang in marriage and Qin Bai Lu were given to Duan Wang? Would Qu Qing Ju be able to tame Rui Wang just like she is taming Duan Wang right now?

      1. *SPOILERS AHEAD*
Actually the emperor intended QBL for He Heng and QQJ for He Yuan, but He Yuan’s mother persuaded him to swap.

The painting is neither of these scenes but a much later one when QQJ spoke up for He Yuan’s mother. That was when I thought his initial intrigue turned into infatuation. But that’s all he indulged himself in. He never made any untoward overtures, probably because he was smart and realistic enough to know nothing would come out of it. But it wasn’t just about QQJ’S attractiveness. I felt that the what-could-have-been was also a large part of his fascination, especially since he didn’t have a happy marriage with QBL while He Heng and QQJ had a loving one.

  5. I missed HH/QQJ interactions so I’m excited for the next chapter hehe.

    Thanks for the translation!

  6. I very much agree with your thoughts at the start of the chapter. Indeed, different people would make different choices. In this novel, a few female characters were jealous of QQJ and envied her good fortune. But if given the same set of circumstances, would they have had QQJ’s wisdom to handle all the challenges with deftness? The same goes for He Yuan. Even if he had married her, would he have the wisdom to appreciate what he had? The author had hinted otherwise.

  7. What a waste of the cloak. Gentleman HH… have to wait to see if his actions were out of love (definitely respect) or just a display.
Not sure if QQJ has scholarly and artistic talent, but one needs to know where the boundary lies, QBL is surely lacking.

      1. Well, Qin Bai Lu did show off using rare high quality tea from the Emperor’s to the banquet.

Compared to that, Qu Qing Ju’s coat couldn’t be more expensive. LOL.

  8. “three women, three different roads … … who will end up on top?”

Insert Tyra Bank’s ANTM’s “Wanna be on TOP?~” And now the song is playing on my mind and the Wang Feis are replacing the model wannabe’s. LOL.

Hahaha! Qu Qing Ju will be known as the “Walkout Wang Fei”. But that’s really brave and wise of her. Why stay when it will only cause trouble and you might be provoked to say something you’ll regret due to anger?

This Qin Bai Lu indeed reminds me of Feng Zi Jin and Liang Shi with their I-am-far-more-superior-than-these-women attitude. I can imagine trouble to be brewed by this woman.

Wei Qing E seems to be not so lucky with her husband, considering her indifferent outlook to marriage and romance. She must have been a sweet girl too as a newlywed who fancies about romance and dolling up but due to experience in adjusting to a life in Fu, she became a hard-up woman who believes things like that are just mere fancies and won’t help her survive. She did say “she poured her heart in, but she hadn’t seen wang ye treat her this way”. Sad~

    Thankies for the chapter~

    1. Um… … I actually think that ANTM would be more suited for the He brothers… … who wants to be Emperor?

  9. I wish Chinese men of Chinese drama really look like the one featured on the topmost part. *sighs* Sorry if what I said doesn’t have any connection to the chapter, I was reminiscing when I watched Scarlet Heart Ryeo (Chinese historical drama).

  10. ((that cloak that Qu Qing Ju carelessly dragged on the snow, it was made from the finest Yun brocade and sewn with silk on the inside. When it touched water,)) (( Now that this cloak has been dragged in the snow, naturally it couldn’t be worn anymore.))
so how are they able to clean it then🤐

    1. In modern life, we have dry cleaning service to do that LOL. But in the past, well… probably they wouldn’t wash it?
Such dresses can only be afford by high class ladies who are pampered by their men so that they don’t fear wasting money.
Those kind of ladies would be served anywhere and never sweat :-D, especially cos it’s winter attire so one won’t sweat.
Frankly speaking, we don’t normally wash our coat or cloak that often either, right?
If it is made of leather, it will not be washed either.
In QQJ case here, unless one is too careless, the dress would normally not get dirty either, so… probably they would just hang it and let the wind breeze to let any smell fading away.
But if it’s dragged on the snow it will wrinkle and dirty, so it’s wasted LOL.
