Chapter Ninety Two Karma

Zhuzi,” Yao Xi’s eyes were red as she helped Qu Yue Su sit up on the bed. Then she turned to bring over the medicine bowl, which was steaming due to the temperature of its contents, “Drink the medicine.”

Qu Yue Su leaned weakly against the headboard. As she took the medicine bowl, she saw Yao Xi’s burned hands and grimaced: “It’s me who has dragged you down. All these years you stayed with me, when did you ever have to do this?” Even if she didn’t see it with her eyes, she knew that the medicine had been brewed by Yao Xi on her own. Now that wang ye didn’t come to her rooms, and wang fei targeted her at every occasion, even the servants in her yard dared to steal and cut corners, pointing at the mulberry and cursing the locust tree, much less the kitchen people.

Zhuzi, what are you saying?” Yao Xi forced a smile and hid her burnt hand back into her sleeve, “Drink the medicine and after a night, it will all get better.” Thinking about what Chief Steward He had just said, she almost couldn’t keep the smile up. Now that even wang ye wasn’t willing to help zhuzhi, how would they live?

Qu Yue Su finished the medicine in a few mouthfuls. Seeing Yao Xi’s state, she sighed: “Yao Xi, do you remember my father’s birthday banquet held five years ago?”

Yao Xi took the empty bowl from Qu Yue Su’s hand and minutely shook her head.

“It’s normal that you don’t remember, but it remains fresh in my memory,” Qu Yue Su grimaced, “That year, I accidentally broke a porcelain in Father’s room. That day was Father’s birthday and breaking something was unlucky. I was very scared and purposefully got someone to lure da jie into father’s room … …”

When she heard, Yao Xi remembered. She recalled that after lao ye’s birthday, he had been so angry that he slapped da xiaojie on her face and sentenced her to stand in the yard for a whole night. After that, da xiaojie became seriously ill. Furen wouldn’t get a doctor to see da xiaojie. If it hadn’t been that the Tian Family had sent someone to deliver something to da xiaojie, da xiaojie probably would have died that year. She hadn’t thought that the matter had been connected to zhuzi, and even more, she hadn’t thought that her zhuzi would have such tactics at such a young age. She hesitated before remarking, “Nubi remembers that da xiaojie nearly died that year.”

“Yes, almost gone. At that time, I was afraid and guilty,” she coughed, “But she lived. If she hadn’t lived, then it would have been me who would’ve married into Duan Wang Fu.”

Yao Xi’s hand, which held the bowl, shook. She looked at the sickly complexion of zhuzi and supported her to lie down and tucked the blanket in. She comforted: “Zhuzi, you’re sick, don’t talk nonsense. Nubi will go see if there is something to eat.” As she came out of the room, she released a long breath. She still remembered Mu Jin  painstakingly begging zhuzi to beg furen to send for a doctor.

At that time, zhuzi’s face was full of helplessness, and even used the reason of filial piety to refuse Mu Jin. Afterwards, zhuzi had sent her to give some pills to da xiaojie and never mentioned it again. She had never expected the truth of the matter was actually this. She rubbed her arms, feeling cold in the hot summer day.

“Isn’t that Yao Xi?” A yahuan wearing green saw Yao Xi come out and hollered, “Is Qu ce fei well? Our zhuzi has missed her.”

“Not well yet, thanks to yiniang for thinking of her.” Yao Xi’s smile wasn’t pretty. This yahuan was one who served another yiniang. Usually, they didn’t have much interaction. But now, even a personal yahuan of a yiniang could mock zhuzi.

“Such a hot day, it’s such a pain to endure,” The yahuan’s tone suddenly changed, “I heard that when the Empress hadn’t yet married, she had been abused by her family, don’t you think …… what it’s like now, isn’t it karma?”

She saw Yao Xi’s expression change and smiled. Clapping her hands, she remarked: “The Heavens have eyes. People who do evil things don’t have good endings.” The green-clad yahuan bowed slightly, “I respect you for being a loyal servant but think more for yourself.” She turned and left.

Yao Xi looked at the yahuan’s back. She gave a helpless smile and went on her original path to the kitchen.

The news that the Wei Family’s female candidate had broken palace protocol during the mourning period for xiandi and was expelled from the palace by the Emperor, quickly became the joke of Jing City. The Wei Family had some reputation in Jing but now, they’d lost all honor and didn’t have the courage to even leave the house.

The female candidates had gone through countless rounds of elimination. Originally, they were people who had a chance to be given to other members of the Imperial House or to be taken into the hougong to serve. Due to the passing of xiandi, aside from the Imperial House that had to observe mourning, even the common people couldn’t marry for a month.

But that Wei Family, they’d thought to let their daughter capture the attention of the new Emperor during the mourning period. Why didn’t they think of the Emperor’s personality, was he a lusty person? Even more so, the love between the Imperial Couple was known by everyone in Da Long Dynasty. Was the Wei Family’s daughter more beautiful than a goddess? From where did she get the confidence to break into the Imperial Gardens?

The second day after Wei Zhu was sent back to the Wei Family, she was sent by the Wei Family into a nunnery. The reason given was that she would cultivate morals and pray for xiandi and the Emperor.

Everyone knew that this was the Wei Family pulling a cloth to hide themselves. The Emperor had already sent down the decree. The daughters of the Wei Family couldn’t enter the Imperial House, this Wei Family was over.

The three months of mourning passed by quickly but He Heng still followed the protocols of mourning, paying close attention to his attire. This caused the world to praise the filial piety of the Emperor.

But not matter what, according to tradition, He Heng was now allowed to take new concubines. However, everyone in the hougong knew that the Emperor had no intentions of entering the hougong.

The sixth day of the eighth month of Qing De Thirty Fourth Year was the most auspicious day in the near half year as calculated by the Imperial Astronomers. The Ziwei star and its pair were bright, and it had the influence of the phoenix raising its head. So it was the most appropriate day for the crowning ceremony of the Empress.

The Empress’ crowning ceremony was a very momentous occasion in Da Long Dynasty. First, sacrifices would be offered to the Heavens and prayers would be recited; next the Emperor and Empress would bow to the ancestors to notify them that this woman was one of the Imperial Family. Then the Emperor would personally put in the phoenix hairpin personally for the Empress and draw on her brows. Lastly, the Empress, wearing the phoenix robe, would receive the bows of the Royal Court Officials and the noblewomen.

In front of the copper mirror, Qu Qing Ju wore the phoenix robe that the weavers had rushed  to make in three months by working day and night. Though the layers of clothing looked complicated and majestic, it didn’t feel very heavy on the body.

The outermost wide-sleeved floor-length phoenix robe didn’t have any gold or pearls but it was so beautiful that it blinded everyone’s eyes.

As she watched He Heng solemnly draw on her brows for her and gently put the phoenix crown on her, she gave a smile.

Once they finished everything, they clasped their hands together as they walked to the high platform. On the platform were the dragon chair and the phoenix chair; dragon on the left, phoenix on the right.

Qu Qing Ju stood in front of the phoenix chair, slightly raising her chin to look at the hundreds of officials under her and watched as those people simultaneously knelt down towards her.

“Emperor, wan sui, wan sui, wan wan sui, Empress, qian sui, qian sui, qian qian sui!”

And then it was the three bows and nine kowtows. Qu Qing Ju stood side by side with He Heng. Looking at the scene before her, she felt strangely exhilarated.

“Rise,” the Minister of Ceremonies called, “Music.”

The music sounded slightly solemn yet light. Qu Qing Ju didn’t really know what song it was, but looking at the reactions of the officials as they stood with bent bodies, she could guess that it was a very high standard for her crowning ceremony.

After the music stopped, Qu Qing Ju and He Heng sat down at the same time. Then it was the officials’ turn to bow, one by one according to their ranks. Then it was the titled women. Just to watch people kneel to her, Qu Qing Ju sat for more than two hours.

After the people finished, He Heng spoke: “Today is the Empress’ crowning ceremony, and also the year that zhen ascended to the throne. To accumulate virtue for the Empress, the world would be especially pardoned. Those banished would be reduced sixty miles, those in prison reduced one year, those on the death sentence will be delayed one month to their execution!”

The people under shouted the Emperor and Empress were kind, and would be lucky for ten thousand years.

Qu Qing Ju hadn’t thought that He Heng would pardon the world at her crowning ceremony. Even though it was customary for the new Emperor to pardon the world after ascending the throne, but waiting for today to announce the decree, it was too ……

She turned to look at the person beside her and smiled helplessly.

Even if the Empress’ crowning ceremony was done extremely grand, but the ceremonies for Heng fei and the others were much simpler when they followed. Heng fei’s was still alright, but the other three couldn’t compare to the occasions when the xiandi’s consorts of equivalent rank were promoted. Especially Ping cairen. It was absolutely unbearable to see. If it wasn’t that the Empress’ bestowments also came down that day, almost no one in the palace would have known that it was the day that she was officially titled.

For people, what was worse was not being ignorant, but being able to make comparisons. All those in the palace were intelligent. And they could all see what was happening. This Ping cairen not being favored by the Emperor was a certainty. Since the Emperor didn’t care for her, would they be willing to flatter her?

Feng Zi Jin finally knew just how difficult palace life could be. The food delivered each day was cold. The tea was old, and not of good quality. If something was lacking or needed fixing, it was extremely difficult for the Department of Internal Affairs to come remedy it.

She had fought and complained but in the end, she found that what was sent to her became more and more terrible. Sometimes they wouldn’t even send anything. After these months, she finally knew what was “the servants bullying the masters” and the torture of the deep palace.

Zhuzi, Han liangdi has come,” Xia Yun quickly walked into the room, her expression unpleasant.

Feng Zi Jin grimaced as she stood. As she came out of the inner room, she saw Han Qing He drinking tea as she sat on the chair. Her steps paused. She walked in front, bowing, and made a greeting: “Pinqie greets Han liangdi.”

“Please stand, Ping cairen,’ Han Qing He smiled as she examined Feng Zi Jin. The other was wearing a slightly worn dark dress, completely devoid of the arrogance she once had in the fu. She put down the teacup, wiping her mouth, and remarked, “Your tea is too bitter. I’ll have someone deliver some new tea to you tomorrow.”

Feng Zi Jin declined: “There’s no need to trouble Han liangdi.”

“We can’t have that. Once upon a time, meimei wouldn’t drink anything at wang fu except the Long Jing before the first rain. Now that you have entered the palace, you can’t deny yourself.” She stood, asking, “Today’s sunshine is great, why doesn’t cairen accompany me on a walk?”

Knowing that she was intentionally making it difficult, Feng Zi Jin could do nothing except to follow behind Han Qing He.

Han Qing He gave a cold smile as she walked at the front. In the past when Feng Zi Jin humiliated her, she had been even more ruthless. What she was doing now wasn’t really anything. Thinking about it, Han Qing He turned back to look at Feng Zi Jin, the smile on her face growing wider.

In the future, there was still more to come. The humiliations she had suffered, she didn’t suffer them for nothing.

  1. Thanks for the update. It seems that FZJ is reaping what she sowed. Finally QQJ crowned the Empress.

  2. QYS is disgusting ! She dare daydream of becoming Duan Wang Fei ~ humph …. Do u think He Heng will favor u like QQJ ? You don’t deserve the pity I felt for u yesterday 😡 Serve u right ! Go die in shit !

    1. Totally agree with you, I felt sorry for her at times but after her confession about the past…. she totally deserves what she is getting. I feel very sorry for her maid tho T-T hope she finds a better master to serve.

    2. my sentiment exactly…these women kept thinking if they are the one married to He Heng, they would be the same as Qu Qing Ju. what a grand delusion…

    3. Exactly. Women like this are so freaking stupid. QQJ got the marriage due to her maternal family. Had nothing to do with that crappy dad. If QQJ wasn’t around, the marriage would have gone to some other family. QYS was never considered.

  3. Thank you for the chapter!! I had to get my fix before bedtime. lol This chapter is so nicely named. From Qu Yue Su to Feng Zi Jin, karma’s coming to bite them back.

  4. Thank you for the chapter~! HH too cute lol never stops trying to show his love for QQJ to the world =D

  5. Thanks. QYS….she was sly and pitiless from a young age…she could have begged her mother to help the QQJ in the past to atone for her sin…but she turned her back. It truly is karma. I still don’t get how QYS thinks that she would have been chosen for HH if QQJ wasn’t around…there are obvious differences in QYS’s relatives and QQJ’s. Also, with only the power of the weakened Qu family, even if by some miracle she had entered Duan Wang Fu, HH would not have even been inclined to treat QYS as kindly as he had the previous QQJ. There’s also no way that QYS with her stupidity and slyness could have captivated HH the way that QQJ did.

HH is the ever loving and supremely obvious abput it husband of QQJ. I love their interactions.

    1. That was what I thought too. I think the difference between her and her parents is that she knew and felt what she did was wrong but pushed it down. I don’t think Liang shi and the duke felt what they did was wrong.

  6. Wow!!! First? Karam really hurts wen it comes… Well hope to see more of He Heng and Qu Qing Ju!!! I wonder if there is a part were someone harms Qu Qing Ju? I really hope to see how far HH can go if she nearly dies because of this…

      1. Oh, no!! What is going to happen?? My poor heart..

And Qu Yue Su is just as delusional as her mother. Why does every other maiden seem to dream of becoming Duan Wang Fei & the Empress? Wasn’t Rui Wang the favored one before & expected to take the throne? Ugh, so annoying. Only Luo Wen Yao is sensible. He Heng wouldn’t even treat anyone else as good as he did Qu Qing Ju for heaven’s sake!

      2. Well, who doesn’t want to become the wife of the “most powerful man in the world”? This is a society with an “absolute monarch”. They see the favor Qu Qing Ju has and the honors given to her so they think if they were He Heng’s wife, they will receive the same.

  7. That’s clearly karma for you XD

Now that I think about it, Han Qin He was the one that had it worst because of her poor status in the past… It’s almost cute how she’s having her little revenge, without going too far aha!

So QYS was actually a spoiled little brat huh… not that it’s surprising…

Anyway, thanks for the daily fix, now 24h to endure… gaah…

  8. The KARMA is real in this chapter!!! XD and wow HH can you get anymore sappy with ur love confession to the world! XD everyone knows you love QQJ!!! Lol

  9. Emperor, wang sui, wang sui, wang wang sui, Empress, qian sui, qian sui, qian qian sui!”
This sentence…Why is it wang sui wang sui wang wang sui and not wan sui wan sui wan wan sui?

  10. Thanks!
Eh..my pity for yue su has totally disappeared. Why doesn’t she blame her parents or herself? -clicks tongue- well, han qing he’s lucky she was only arrogant to qing Ju once or twice.

      1. Haha,I went out to buy food, otherwise I would be a lot earlier in commenting lol.Ok,I will check out the Google docs!

  11. This chapter truly showed all sorts of Karma.
I still have a bit of sympathy for QYS though. Kids are thoughtless and though she may not have done anything at the time, I think she truly regretted her decision and actions back then, or else she wouldn’t remember it to tell.
    -Sigh-
I’m ready to see the emperor and empress settle and have a baby 😀

Thank you so much for the chapter as usual!

    1. I disagree. I don’t think QYS regrets her actions toward QQJ at all. Instead of thinking about how she should’ve acted, she fantasizes about taking QQJ’s spot. You can say that it was because she was a child but wasn’t QQJ also a child? Even after growing up, she still holds the same attitude towards QQJ until their positions were reversed. Even now, she’s still daydreaming about her being Duan Wang Fei. If that really happened, do you really believe she wouldn’t step all over QQJ? Nah.

      1. Well I think she was regretful but I think you’re also right that she does wish she was DWF at the moment.
Most villians don’t reminisce and feel regretful, for example, QYS mother. They instead feel the world owes them that place but from how it was written, I didn’t get the feeling that QYS was being arrogant. She came more off as a bit regretful and envious of her sister’s position compared to her lot in life.

Now if she did get to be DWF, I think she would have stepped all over QQJ still but circumstances in life changes and i think so do feelings and people.

    2. I don’t know about that. If she regretted it, as a teen she could have been kinder or secretly helped her a little or even talked to her mother about not being so awful. She always watched. It wasn’t until she was at her lowest that she even thought about what she had done, and it wasn’t very much of a reflection on her past behaviour.

  12. QYS might look like white bunny but she’s delusional. Even if original QJ was passed away that year, she will never ever be selected as Duan Wang’s wang fei! Excuse me, who is she?! What was she thinking?! Her mother is low birth! 😓

The problem with people like QYS is that most of the time, they dont feel guilty for what happened to QJ. Because they think they didn’t do anything harmful directly to QJ. It’s correct that the duke and liang shi who did the dirty job, but QYS (even the Liang cousin) also didnt do anything to stop them. By stander of wrong doings is as worst as the sinner. So I dont feel any pity for this QYS girl.

I can smell something is brewed between Feng cairen and Han liang di. Han liangdi is not very bright and jealous. She might bring herself trouble.

    Thank you for this chapter.

    1. “I can smell something is brewed between Feng cairen and Han liang di. Han liangdi is not very bright and jealous. She might bring herself trouble.”

She will and do look forward to it^^ Sometimes these people just never learn.

  13. At one point I felt sorry for QYS but after reading this chapter.

I still pity her though. I pity her for being a stupid person like her mother. Two peas in a pod. The aplle does not fall far away from the tree. Cruelty n stupidity bred from young n reaping rotten fruit as an adult.

  14. I agree with all of those who’ve said there was no way QYS would have been selected for HH if QQJ had died. Wake up! Your maternal family is too low to even dream. Regardless, if by some miracle she had been, all the women of the fu would be in their old places and HH would be like other men and she would not be treated half as well as QQJ is. She seems to think that QQJ is so fortunate because she married HH. She doesn’t realise that he wouldn’t behave like this with any old woman. In fact, if he married her, HH might not be emperor. QQJ brought him luck and with her intelligence she’s able to protect herself from traps and attacks. i doubt QYS could do the same.

The difference between QQJ and almost all other women in the story is that while she accepts what HH wants tongive her, she doesn’t rely on a man for her happiness, whereas the other women have no choice but to do so, so can never really be free as they’re always at the mercy of someone else’s will. She’s from a time where that isn’t the way of things so has an inner confidence and serenity lacking in the women around her, and that shows in everything she does and I feel is what attracted HH to her.

    Thanks for the chapter.

  15. Thank you…..QYS is so delusional….HH is loving towards QQJ because of her personality and aura that entices HH to want to please her and he is always pleasantly suprised and captivated by her reactions towards him….

  16. poor original QQJ, with so many injustices fell upon her.
QYS sure is greedy! I can label her past wrongdoings as naivety but now that the present QQJ is living a better life, QYS cannot accept it and wants to surpass QQJ’s. And worst of all, regrets that QQJ did not passed away during that year illness… sigh…what wishful thoughts and no sense of remorseful

  17. This is why I didn’t feel sorry for QYS in the first place. Karma really is something..

    1. Me too, to be able to survive her family her whole life is amazing, hers even more sad than cinderella story. This story is like giving back to her happiness, though she already passed.

  18. “Feng Zi Jin finally knew just how difficult palace life could be.”…. At least no one is trying to kill her like what she did to the original QQJ.

  19. Oh, QYS is as despicable as Liang shi. She really got what’s coming for her. Envy rotting her heart, even sick still no repentance. She hopes for something that doesn’t exist, that if didn’t happen. Many who are jealous of QQJ, wouldn’t have a good ending. They are obsessed with ifs.

FZJ from her character she won’t stay still being humiliated by someone she thinks lower than her. Whatever schemes cooking on her head would got back at her. Scary women, their lives is being wasted like that.

I still respect JYY and LYX, they at least living a peace and comfortable life. They knew their situation and find peace with their limited choice as a women born in that era.

With HH being an Emperor, I wonder how HH & QQJ handle many women would want to become part of the harem. Though I couldn’t see HH accepting another concubine. HH was quite afraid of making QQJ misunderstand him meeting another women last time. I think HH is trying to show QQJ his feeling by actions. Never want her to have any cause to doubt him.

Wow sorry for the long rant~

  20. I want to like this story more than I do.

The writing is great. The politics are fun. Overall, it’s entertaining.

But everything goes too perfectly. All the villains are stupid and overstep their bounds. All the protagonist’s allies are virtuous and intelligent. This results in a lack of tension. QQJ is too perfect and skilled – there is never really any danger to her. She outmaneuvers everyone she meets with ease, and is pretty much always justified in what she does.

I had high hopes for QYS. Why? Because she represents the “victim” in the story. She’s strung along by the machinations of her family and the cruelty of her “husband.” Life for women of the time was difficult. Of the times the good guys win in this series, a lot of innocent people get hurt but we don’t see it. I thought QYS would show that QQJ’s power comes at the cost of others, that’s she not necessarily a “good person.”

Instead, it’s revealed in this chapter that you don’t have to feel sorry for QYS at all. She was a villain all along. And she doesn’t repent anything she’s done. It’s only evil people that are raped and treated like shit by everyone so it’s totally OK.

The story would have been WAY more interesting if QYS turned out to actually be a good person. It’s a cheap development and honestly makes me lose a lot of interest. It tells me that going forward, pretty much everything is predictable and is going to go the protagonist’s way.

    Just my two cents.

    1. I agree with you and this has to do with the author’s history. When the author skyrocketed in popularity with the novel before this one, she was really criticized for her portrayal of the female lead in The Profession of a Consort as well as how the story ended. There was a lot of scheming and ruthlessness in that novel. There was so much negativity that she literally wrote To Be A Virtuous Wife to be the opposite of everything that happened in that novel.
The novel had the female lead scheming her way as a lowly ranked concubine in the palace and being careful in all her actions, Qu Qing Ju didn’t have to worry about her status and had allies. The other female lead had to “share” the Emperor, Qu Qing Ju gets He Heng to herself. The other female had one high Imperial Consort enemy after the other that she schemed against and tricked and framed, Qu Qing Ju’s enemies really dug a hole for themselves. The other novel gets an open ending that many people did not like, Qu Qing Ju will get a happy ending in her story. In her author’s note, she calls this a “historical time-travel fairytale” which is pretty accurate.

      1. Huh, that’s fascinating. It explains a ton.

The dialogue and occasional flashes of political intrigue are extremely good, and a huge contrast with the tone of the story. Now I know why.

I might take a look at that other novel!

Thanks for explaining and your excellent translations.

      2. No problem! The author’s attitude with this story was really “f*** you but look, people still read my stories!” Which transferred into Qu Qing Ju’s attitude.

      3. Darn it, then again, if it’s as depressing and twisty as it sounds, I doubt there would be many rushing to translate it.

    2. I suppose her making the decision to enter as a concubine was supposed to show that some people try to fight in ways that realistically can’t work, but they imagine could change the course of their lives. Like when she tried to be for him to help her family. There had never been a single hint that he would lift a finger for her, and yet she still asked.
It also showed that she hadn’t just stood by and watched everyone treat QQJ poorly. That she acted that same way. Maybe it was that one time, and because of it, she didn’t act like that again and just watched, or it could have been to show that the choices you make, change who you are. She did that while the other sister that didn’t participate in the abuse, married the well off man that had the farmland.
It showed that aside from character, trying to get things that are out of reach by any means necessary, won’t turn out well.
I never thought of QYS as the victim. She and her mother were the ones that decided to enter the harem. At that point, even though the Prince had the Emperor’s favour, everyone knew he was not a good man. She also knew that if she went in, she would have nobody to protect or support her. However, the 2 women thought that she would be able to get his affection the same QQJ without considering what she had to offer.
QQJ isn’t perfect either. She watches what is happening and sometimes does nothing, sometimes acts. She always manages her expectations with regards to her husband’s affections and at any point, a new girl could come in and be the magical heroine like other stories and get everyone’s love and support.
      I don’t know.

  21. Karma is REAL!!!

QYS and her species are quite delusional. What makes them think if they were married to HH he would treat them like he treats QQJ?! *smh*

  22. Ugh, what’s with all these salty people saying “if this happened blah blah blah would have happened”?! I don’t feel pity for QYS at all. She was a little devil since young just like her mother and father. She can never have what she can never have. Girl needs to face reality and stop thinking of the “if’s”. Even if she had gotten to be HH’s wife, she still wouldn’t be loved like QQJ and she wouldn’t even be respected because of her malicious thoughts and her personality that HH hates.
