Recap: A Slight Smile is Devastating a.k.a. Wei Wei Yi Xiao Heng Qing Cheng Episode 9 & 10

Well, I was right and this was not a long wait to the meeting.

Episode nine starts in the hospital. As Xiao Nai discusses with his friends about informing Wei Wei, his parents hear it and his mother worries about this “sansao.” Out in the hall, his mother wants to know if he is in a relationship but Professor Xiao states that he believes Xiao Nai won’t get married before he is forty. He then mentions a colleague of his talking about online authors one of which is “Tang Jia San Shao.” He mispronounces it and it comes out as Sugar Family Three Spoons rather than Tang Family Third Young Master. Oh, Professor Xiao, you underestimate your son. He even used the excuse of supporting you to go stalk his pseudo-wife in class.

Later in the day, Yu Gong and the other two friends go out to get food. On the way back, Yu Gong breaks down and starts to cry. He admits that he has been jealous of Xiao Nai before and envied the fact everyone thought Xiao Nai was worth more than him. He then states that Xiao Nai actually doesn’t think that. Xiao Nai had been willing to sacrifice himself to save Yu Gong.

Back in the hospital room, Xiao Nai learns what happened the night of the finals by finding Ni Ni and asking her. They find that Wei Wei hasn’t been online since then. Wei Wei is pictured watching the music video again. She talks with Er Xi about the fleeting nature of friendships in games and how she should be used to it, but she feels much more panicked at Nai He’s disappearance.

Yu Gong and the others suggest that Wei Wei might never come on again so Xiao Nai would need to hack to find her. Xiao Nai replies by stating Wei Wei is watching the video and asks Mo Zha Ta to make something to send notifications to Xiao Nai’s phone when Wei Wei comes online.

Um ... ... creep. I feel that he should just go up to her and talk but Xiao Nai is probably a bit too proud and awkward for that. Also, she runs away and looks scared whenever she sees him which isn't good for his ego.

Xiao Nai ends up watching the video as Wei Wei watches it on repeat through the day and into the nighttime.

It must be love ... ... to watch the same video over and over. Xiao Nai wonders what is so interesting about the video that Wei Wei has to watch it on repeat.

Cao Guang notices Wei Wei’s low spirits the next day and tries to bribe Er Xi in the movie analysis class. Unfortunately, the seat the Cao Guang has reserved for Er Xi breaks (the same one that broke in past episodes) so Cao Guang takes Er Xi to the hospital. Er Xi gets Cao Guang to bring her food to make up for her pain and difficulty of movement and Cao Guang agrees because it allows him to get access to Wei Wei’s thoughts or actions. He learns that Wei Wei is unhappy and plans an outing in the game (which I have now searched and found it has been translated before as A Chinese Ghost Story.) But Er Xi is the person playing her account and Er Xi is moved and then suspicious at the romantic nature of the fireworks. Cao Guang then asks her to become a couple with him.

Wei Wei finally gets out of her slump and resolves to pursue Nai He. But she decides to push it off until she finishes her exam. Wei Wei receives a call from Fengteng Corp about the music video and spousal kidnapping so she is forced to go online. The rest of the episode is close to canon and the episode ends at the shop with Wei Wei in the red dress.

Episode 10

The beginning progresses as in the novel except Meng Yi Ran saw Wei Wei and the others coming out of the shop. Na Na wants to also browse the same shop but Meng Yi Ran cuts her off by saying that it is of low taste and cheap so shopping there would lower her to their level. Na Na is extremely blown by this comment and looks at her own dress.

Wei Wei and Xiao Nai end up meeting as they have in the novel and go to the same restaurant to eat. It is so close to canon for the entire episode that I don’t know what to write. The episode ends with Wei Wei and Xiao Nai sitting on the basketball court bleachers.

Xiao N: I would ask you to marry me but that would frighten you off. So I'm just crouching down to ask to hang out tomorrow rather than giving you the ring now.
Xiao Nai: I would ask you to marry me but that would frighten you off. So I’m just crouching down to ask to hang out tomorrow rather than giving you the ring now.

My thoughts: They really explored Yu Gong and how Xiao Nai has affected his friends, especially through this accident. Yu Gong feels extremely guilty and I think this makes the friends a lot more human rather than just the comedic relief they were in the novel.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but hemming this close to canon makes episode 10 completely fulfilling but completely boring at the same time. There’s that empty feeling when you have thought so much about something and when you get it, it doesn’t seem as good as you have imagined. They also emphasized this scene in almost every long promotional trailer so it does seem a bit overused now.

Er Xi’s situation is also a great train wreck. One mistake due to nervousness is going to harm her, Cao Guang, Zhen Shao Xiang and affect Xiao Yu Yao Yao. Her attacking power is unrivalled!

  1. Your recaps is entertaining and makes me laugh as always. thank you for taking the time to put them up for us until the sub are available. 😀

For me, the first thing I though in my mind when I finished episode 10 was that it is so satisfying. If there was any scenes I thought they would butcher, it would be the first meeting. But they surpassed my expectations. It must be because Gu Man is also the scriptwriter and is there to offer inputs.

To be honest, I don’t expect fireworks for this drama. What wanted from it was the feelings that the novels always give me when I go back and read it time after time again. So far, the drama had done that and more. Therefore, I am not only satisfied, but charmingly blissful about it. After all, not all adaptations does, aka, You are My Sunshine.

So, for today episodes, I woke up both my brothers with my squealing and gushing over the scenes. LOL.

    1. A long sweet marathon to cheer me up would be nice once all 30 episodes are out. That would be a whole day’s worth of sweet young love.

      1. me too.. I don’t expect a whole new level of fireworks for this drama.. the only thing I expect is the warm fuzzy feeling that I have when I read the book and the feeling of admiring the dyamic of their relationship.. I don’t want to watch the typical feeling of insecurities in female lead and all that, I want that whole “I got your back and you got mine” type of relationship, kinda like Xiao Nai and Wei Wei in the movie,, Those are type of relationship that I expected from this drama..

      2. BTW, I don’t know if you know yet. But I think you mentioned that you love that Yang Yang dubbed his voice for the drama. I just wondered if you know that he also sang the ending theme song. LOL. It’s not too bad but I prefer his dubbed voice. 😀

      3. Ahahaha, I actually don’t like Yang Yang’s voice because his enunciation is not as clear as a professional. He does sound better in the ending credits.

    2. Lol I totally agree! Sunshine they stretched quite a bit! coz d novel was much small compared to shanshan n smile is alluring! Though all 3 dramas n novels I have LOVED like crazy!
But still loving every part of it! Even I squealed like a crazy fan… luckily in my time zone d episodes are out by 6pm latest! So luckily my squeals dont disturb my family!!! 😀 😀 😀
I still remember I read this novel after shanshan n sunshine… I made all my friends in university crazy for this book. So thank u @wyhcwe for this wonderful translation of this novel n d recaps!

    1. it’s exactly what I’ve been doing every day since this drama airs. LOL. I’m glad I’m not the only one.

  2. one quick question, what is the meaning of the thumb he shows to the aunt? kinda curious. is he implying that he and wei wei are in a relationship or what?

      1. I was thinking of that may be the sign of that too.. but why was he looked so pleased.? and the aunt looked so confused? was it probably meant as same as showing your pinky finger, like in Japan, to announce that u r actually in a relationship?

  3. Thank you very much…..your recaps is my daily happy dose of the day.
Ha ha……I am reading the novel all over again as well.

  4. Hello!
