Chapter Three Hundred and Eighty Eight – Fantasy Flame Tornado

Pu Yao greedily absorbed the Golden Souls. In the battle between him and Wei, he held the advantage, but he also had expended himself greatly. The two Golden Souls the Chief Elder of the Grey Clan had delivered were a rain that came at the right time. He unhesitatingly stole them from Zuo Mo’s hand. Zuo Mo did not stop him. He had probably guessed that it would be impossible to prevent.

The golden mist permeated Pu Yao’s body at a visible rate. Pu Yao showed a satisfied expression. However, a portion of the golden mist drifted towards Wei. Even though it was just a quarter, Pu Yao was still slightly discontent.

However, he had no solution to this problem. Just like no matter how much he found this false gentleman an eyesore, he was not able to kill the other. There was a direction connection between his three thousand years of survival in the Yao Forging Tower and this strange wretched armor. Wei was the armor spirit of this wretched armor. Pu Yao was about the same, but he was not restricted by the armor.

He had worked his mind for three thousand years to try to take over this gravestone armor. But this gravestone armor was a closed system and extremely strange.

However, when he thought about how this false gentleman was unable to shrink back into the turtle shell, Pu Yao couldn’t help but be smug. Anyway about it, he was a Sky Yao. He understood all kinds of obscure methods, and he finally found a few that were effective.

From a certain perspective, he and Wei shared an existence. The two could not destroy each other. Pu Yao could not even absorb the Golden Souls completely by himself. There definitely would be a portion which Wei would absorb. Even though Pu Yao clearly held the more powerful position, there was nothing for him to feel happy about. Even if this false gentleman had an extraordinary background, but in the eyes of Pu Yao, whose eyes were on the top of his head, this was a very low thing.

A piece of armor sitting in a position equal to his … … this was too motherf***ing displeasing to ge!

Having finished absorbing the Golden Soul, Pu Yao’s hair became even darker and shinier, and his bloody pupil had an additional sheen. The snake-like tongue unconsciously licked his lips with lingering hunger. He glanced at Wei who was sitting cross-legged. He could see that the Golden Soul was also of significant help to Wei.

A cold smirk floated at the corner of Pu Yao’s mouth. After three thousand years together, he understood his neighbor very well. Even if this guy agreed to not pass mo skills to Zuo Mo, he would not give up so easily.

However, Wei definitely would not think that his scant words that day had inspired great trust in Pu Yao .

To a person as perverse as Pu Yao, the inspiration brought by the most minuscule hint could change too many things.

Just wait and see!

Pu Yao narrowed his eyes.

Zuo Mo stared at Mo Ru Huo and was slightly surprised. A person that looked so rough used such strange yao arts. Yao really could not be judged based on their appearances.

Mo Ru Huo shivered under Zuo Mo’s stare. Zuo Mo’s silence pressured him. What should he say at this time?

“Sorry, I got the wrong person?” Or “Brother, I’ve long heard of you, give your little brother mercy!” Or just run away immediately … …

Various thoughts formed in the pitiful Mo Ru Huo’s mind. He did not think of resisting at all. Even if he was facing Yu Zi Zhou, he definitely would not be so nervous. Yu Zi Zhou was stronger than him but he believed if he gritted his teeth and did not fear death, he would have a chance at survival. He felt that in terms of viciousness, the great majority of geniuses could not compare to him.

But facing Xiao Mo Ge, no matter if they competed on strength or viciousness, he thought he had no chance at all.

What made him want to cry the was that he had been the one to instigate this matter! He really was seeking death! He wanted to slap himself. Such an idiotic matter had happened to him! All of the fighters of the yao world were trying to avoid this brute right now, and he had pushed himself in front of the other … …

Even he knew that the bounties of the yao markets for Xiao Mo Ge were continuously decreasing. The yao that had been wanting to watch a spectacle were really frightened this time. Vicious and savage, bloodthirsty and murderous, this kind of presence wasn’t something a yao with clean hands could have. The consciousness could not be faked.

On this point, almost all the yao had come to an unusual consensus.

Xiao Mo Ge was a lawless brute whose hands were drenched in blood!

The elders of those students ordered them to stop their actions against Xiao Mo Ge, and some over zealous students were put under house arrest by their clan, unable to leave. The Ji Family and the Blue Flower Family kept low key and clearly did not want any further incidents. Even the Genius Alliance which was usually loud-spoken collectively lost their voice.

They had enough privilege, enough strength, but none were willing to provoke a lawless brute. Even more so a lawless brute who was so young but had such power. Some experienced yao discussed secretly among themselves suggesting that if Xiao Mo Ge could live for another twenty years, then the yao world would have another butcher.

Just as Mo Ru Huo was thinking what to do, Xiao Mo Ge suddenly spoke.

“You left behind the yao art imprint on Cang Lin?”

Mo Ru Huo’s heart shook once. This was the classic interrogation! Zuo Mo’s words destroyed the last lingering thread of hope inside. Mo Ru Huo was truly a vicious person. The desperate situation provoked his viciousness. He raised his head and said harshly, “Yes! I left it!”

Zuo Mo made sure and so he did not hesitate. A few little yao arts smashed from his hands towards Mo Ru Huo.

As they started to fight, Mo Ru Huo started to calm down and settled to receive Zuo Mo’s attacks. After a few rounds, he quickly found that Xiao Mo Ge did not have the unstoppable presence he had in the yao recording arts. His attacks could not be considered strong. However, Mo Ru Huo was very battle-experienced. His murderousness was usually high, but he was cautious when he fought.

After standing up for twenty more breaths, Xiao Mo Ge was still as soft as water and did not pose too much of a threat. At this time, Mo Ru Huo finally relaxed completely and his attacks increased.

Mo Ru Huo’s yao art was extremely unique. His hands would continuously flick and swipe at the space in front of him as he was surrounded by dancing flames. The flames in the air floated along to strange paths. It was as though there were invisible threads in front of him that pulled the flames surrounding him.

Zuo Mo randomly threw out a little yao art and stopped a thread of flame. A feeling of danger rose. He did not hesitate and saw a blade of flame brush past his scalp. There was no time for him to dodge as a spear of flame jumped up and pointed straight at his stomach.

Zuo Mo’s legs crossed, and the fingers of his left hand flicked. A little yao art accurately hit the flame spear and caused it to divert from its path. However, Mo Ru Huo’s attack did not stop, and became even fiercer! The flames surrounding him were not just able to dance and attack to his will, but could transform into all kinds of attack forms.

It was the first time that Zuo Mo encountered a yao art as strange as this. His actions were uncoordinated and he made a somewhat sorry figure.

Mo Ru Huo saw this and his morale rose. He guessed that Xiao Mo Ge’s golden yellow armor probably had some special restriction. Another possibility was that Xiao Mo Ge had been wounded last time. Otherwise, he should not be refraining from using the armor.

Thinking about it this way, the terror in Mo Ru Huo’s heart retreated. Xiao Mo Ge’s situation was not uncommon. Those yao arts that were wondrously powerful usually had stringent requirements, or one had to pay a weighty price.

If it was like that, then this was undoubtedly the time where Xiao Mo Ge was the weakest!

Was this a chance given by the heavens?

Thinking about this brute that shook all of the yao world being abused under his hands, a feeling of exhilaration that he never had before filled his body. His body was even trembling from his excitement! Such a wonderful matter! A matter that he didn’t even dare to think of was happening in front of him. The extreme terror and the hopelessness from before decreased. The stimulation and pleasure produced almost consumed him. In this kind of wondrous situation, his state reached the highest peak of his life. The yao art that he had just had a breakthrough with did not seem raw in his hands and was confidently executed. Each yao art was carried out instinctively, so perfect that he felt this was a pleasurable experience!

Zuo Mo felt as though he had suddenly landed in a flaming hurricane. All kinds of fire yao arts covered the skies and earth as they shot at him. Even worse, he had no room to dodge. The other’s yao arts spread out, and their presence was bigger than Zuo Mo imagined.

However, Zuo Mo was not panicking. His figure looked sorry, but both his expression and his gaze had was dead still.

The light on his hands never stopped. To him, little yao arts were as simple as breathing. Sometimes it was one light, sometimes many. Five hundred kinds of little yao arts formed from the many combinations in his hands. These little yao art combinations either guided or stopped. Zuo Mo would frequently find the smallest space and use them to dodge repeatedly.

The flame hurricane continuously strengthened!

Looking at Xiao Mo Ge who was in a sorry state under his yao arts, Mo Ru Huo felt extremely smug. The longer his [Fantasy Flame Tornado] persisted, the more powerful it was. It would continuously strengthen itself, and the amount of spiritual power he expended would not change greatly.

The longer this battle dragged out, the more advantageous it was for him.

As expected, Xiao Mo Ge became even more harried. There were a few wounds on his body.

Even though it was just a few small wounds, Mo Ru Huo could not help but roar with laughter. “Xiao Mo Ge! Struggle! Experience such wonderful yao arts! Haha! Ooh, another wound, so pitiful!”

Mo Ru Huo started to play his favorite game of cat and mouse. Looking at Xiao Mo Ge who was holding on in the tornado, he did not want to miss any scene.

“Tsk tsk! Really hardy! As expected of Xiao Mo Ge! Such beautiful movements! Come on! Let’s have another one! Haha!”

Mo Ru Huo laughed freely.

Inside the tornado, Zuo Mo was silent as he withstood with effort. But Mo Ru Huo did not notice that the lights on Zuo Mo’s dangling hands were slowly changing.

Translator Ramblings: Anyone want to compute how many possible combinations of the little yao arts are possible? There’s probably an upper limit to how many yao arts can be used in a string.

There was a comment about Nan Yue and the little yao arts that WanderingGummiOfDoom informed me about. The knowledge that Pu Yao taught Zuo Mo who then taught Nan Yue is technically “secret.” Some of you think that Nan Yue should keep it a secret rather than teaching her clansmen. The other side of the matter is that Nan Yue is strengthening Zuo Mo because her clan will grow stronger and then they can be of help to Zuo Mo. I think this is actually a pretty interesting problem and we have been infected so much by Pu Yao and Zuo Mo pricing knowledge and skills that we want Zuo Mo to get something out of it.

However, if we look at Zuo Mo’s actions in the past, he doesn’t price knowledge and expect a great deal when he shares his own knowledge. In this case, little yao arts was a freebie he got from Pu Yao. In the past, he has shared his forging knowledge and also his sword formation with his camps. So he doesn’t have a problem with sharing at all. Pu Yao thinks this is simple stuff so he doesn’t have a problem either. Therefore, I don’t think Nan Yue actually “broke” any rules in sharing. Things might be different for the mo but yao and mo might be similar. Pu Yao has mentioned in the past that mo would work for their generals/leaders who will reward them with techniques they could give back to their clan. This might be one of those cases.

  1. Zuo Mo is a weird one. Sometimes he’s super generous and gives all kinds of expensive things to his followers, at other time he hoards the smallest scrap of jingshi like a miser.

    1. Generous? Fool! It’s a great bargain!
Zuo Mo gives techniques and materials, his followers give him their life.

      1. Any deal that lands you a cute and adorable Nan Yue as a follower is a great bargain, yup yup.

    2. Actually, he’s pretty consistent. Misers will hoard jingshi for the sake of jingshi and not use it even when necessary. ZM will hoard jingshi in order to be generous when necessary. He embraced the killing by jingshi technique quickly.

    3. Actually his character has changed since the start of the novel, he used to like jingzhi jingzhi and jingzhi.

Now he likes jingzhi, admiration of people and doing good deeds but to a smaller degree than jingzhi, it’s stated as much in the novel. Also himself has said he would like to find a way for the people following him to have a good life and adequate jingzhi to make them not regret following him. This could be applied to Na Hue as well, though I’m pretty sure he didn’t put that much thought into it, maybe subconsciously though.

  2. Thanks for the chapter!
The technique taugt to Nan Yue is 100% usefull to her, and her clan. It is maybe 50% usfull to other? Gold for some, iron to others.
The only problem I see is that weak clan gets attacked for the technique.

    1. the two high level techniques can only be used by those two clans, the discussion was about the little yao arts he shared with her

    2. No its useless to anyone not of the bloodline. All those secret arts use their original body thus nobody will steal a wisteria art if their body is originally a blue rose.

  3. If you just assume that you can create 1 little yao art on each finger, but can use multiples of the five hundred in each spell, and that the order of the yao art matters in the combination, then the total would be 31,250,000,000,000 (thirty one thousand, two hundred and fifty billion) yao art combinations.

  4. Number of possible Little Yao Art combinations (input this into google search replacing the text with numbers) =

[Number of Little Yao Arts (forgot this number… 500?] choose [How many you combine, 2, 3, and so on]

Example: 500 choose 2 = 124750 possible combinations of 2 seperate Little yao Arts.

    1. because there is no upper limit to how many L.Y.A. you can combine, the possible combinations are limitless. This is so because you can use the same art multiple times in a combination. if you cant repeat an art, then the possible outcomes would be 500+499+498+. . . all the way down to +1= and what ever # you get is the answer.

    1. Hehe, I noticed it too. 🙂 It made me laugh.

Spend too long with Zuo Mo, you start imitating his style!

  5. Calculating Yao art combinations isn’t very hard, but there are many unknown variables.

We don’t know if there’s a limit, we also don’t know if sequence matters (3-2-1 vs 1-2-3), we don’t know if they can be repeated in single use (e.g. 1-2-3-1-4)

Depending on those, we can get different number.

We know he used 16-art combo, and we know there’s 500 little arts. If we limit ourself to 16 different arts without repeating, we’ll get C(500,16) = 572236764414990007896456366375. That’s 30 digits.

Any other option should result in even higher number.

    1. We definitely know that they can be repeated in single use, before the first prison trial there was a flame dragon or some such that was composed of seven of the same little yao art.

  6. Thanks.

For your Q: Anyone want to compute how many possible combinations of the little yao arts are possible?
    1. If there are no repetitions
    500 ! (500 factorial => 500 x 499 x 498 x …. x 1)

    2. If there are repetitions. Depends on the number of repetitions allowed. Then we can use NCr (permultations and combinations) to compute.

    3. If there are infinite amount of repetitions allowed then the number of combinations is infinite.

    4. Currently, since we do not have sufficient information, it is an NP-Hard problem

  7. Thanks for the chapter!
So Zuo No is doing something similar to the orange Yao?
Zuo No is wise with his stuff , sharing good things can strengthen the battle prowess of his troop and their loyalty at the same time and if they are stronger they can get more jingshi😉
    He’s investing in the future.

  8. >Anyone want to compute how many possible combinations of the little yao arts are possible?
Seems like a fools errand. The combination isn’t just which arts are used, it’s how they’re used together. All these descriptions of strings keep making me think of knots, which probably isn’t the right mental image for what’s going on but… I guess it works as an analogy? You can tie and infinite variety of knots with an arbitrary length of string. You can tie 500 times as many if you add in 500 colors of string to choose from. The number of possible knots explodes super exponentially once you get to use an arbitrary number of strings.
This analogy doesn’t address combinations that don’t work; however, even if those occupy the majority of the space of hypothetical combinations, you would still end up with an absolutely disgusting number of working combinations.
    >There’s probably an upper limit to how many yao arts can be used in a string.
I don’t think we’ve ever gotten any implication that there’s an upper limit. As many as your consciousness can hold out for casting, maybe? Probably more, since you can build it pieces by piece or with the help of a group.

  9. Not a maths student, so not super sure about this, but if only combinations of 2 are allowed, and order doesn’t matter, then its about 125k. Really not sure how to go about calculating higher length combos than that.

  10. >Anyone want to compute how many possible combinations of the little yao arts are possible?

    1. Name (required) says:
Name goes in the name field says:

      Oh, snap.

I figured it was blocking me for using blatantly fake email addresses.
Hadn’t realized it was just delayed. Whoops.

  11. If I remember my combinatorics correctly, to compute the number of combinations (a) you need to know the number of arts (n) and then the possible string length (x). After that, it’s fairly simple; ‘string length to the nth power’, or a = x^n. Given a few hundred arts, even small strings of arts give large numbers of combinations.

Now, if it’s more complicated than that, things get trickier. If you can’t repeat any arts in a string, you need to use factorials, and if you can only use arts in certain _patterns,_ you need to get really clever. computing that sort of thing is doable, but I can’t remember how it works anymore.

    1. n!/r!*(n-r)! in the general case.

and that’s not even acounting for the extra dimensions.

  12. Assuming there are no repetitions:
Since there are 500 little yao arts, if we take each combination into account, Then it should be a summation of all possible combinations from 1 to 500.
I ran it in a python compiler and this is what I got,

    1. Wow … … I think this makes the case why Ten Finger Prison is useful. Otherwise, people will spend forever trying to try out combinations.

    2. You are also assuming there is only 1 way to combine each little yao art. It could be possible to combine the same arts and get a different result, by manipulating them in a different way.

      1. That would make it infinite, as the number of times you can combine the same to itself would be limitless…….

  13. Thanks for the chapter.
I was always under the impression that the deal with Nan Yue was that Zuo Mo / Pu Yao would return the South Sky Arrow Art to their legit owners, the Wisteria Clan. Therefore, it’s only natural for Nan Yue to teach it to everyone. Just like Cang Ze will of course teach Grey Scar to everyone in the Grey clan!

    1. the deal wasn’t for the little arts teaching as well though. She is not teaching them the south sky arrow arts offensive moves she is teaching little yao arts. The little Yao arts secrets are unknown to the rest of the yao world they can be found but Pu knows the path and he has taught Zou Mo the basic secrets he then passes it on to Nan Yue. The disagreement is about wether she should be passing on the little yao arts basic secrets. They are basic so I agree with translator there would be no problem and even if he knew Zou Mo would approve esp knowing Pu’s desire to help the clan.

  14. Also gotta remember, not all Yao art combinations are stable/usable, like his wasteland beast, without special methods will just result in failure. Also the more yao arts you add to an attack, the more variables that need to be considered. Its just Zuo Mo has tremendous experience in formations, which is why hes able to do stuff like 16 yao art combinations ect.

  15. I’m thinking it’ll be a series of little yao arts combined into a bomb. Zuo Mo has a knack for making explosives, except it’ll backfire right at the right moment for both to be removed from the ten finger prison.

  16. 1) Ge, I mean Daren gave NY permission to teach her clansman South Sky Arrow Art. She probably considers it natural that they learn by focusing on little yao arts first since that was the way she was taught so passing on ge’s, I mean Daren’s teaching was included in the permission.

    2) The total number of combinations possible is 42.

  17. Thanks for the chapter WYHCWE and WanderingGummiOfDoom! Can’t wait for Zuo Mo to develop a new method and smash this guy over the head with it.

  18. 2^500 = 3.273390608 × 10^150, because of a proof from Pascal’s Triangle. This is every art plus 2 art combination plus 3 art combination all the way to using all 500 arts at once. Also, this assumes that you can’t use any art more than once in a combination.

    1. That’s assuming oyu use only a single method of combination between arts, no?

      1. That too. My assumptions are based heavily on the lack of talking much about the actual method(s) through which the arts are combined. If we are given more numbers and information, then we can count those too. Wyhcwe’s point seemed to be how probable/improbable it would be to make the correct yao art combination for the wasteland beast art combo, so I think this already lets us fathom how many possibilities there are.

      2. Eeeh, taking into account the action is staged in a chinese fantasy universe where ‘less is more’ (simple/natural formations usually produce greatest results) its probably not a big number of actual arts used (but there’s also the three into one and nine into one, also the ‘magic’ of sevens so my guess the actual number of arts used to produce the beast is around 500*7*9(maybe 9 to the power to 2), but also knowing how in said setting there usually is a few unique ways to combine things there probably ain’t that many possible combinations of arts used, but the structure as a whole is probably what matters more.

  19. Thanks for the chapter,
He really shouldn’t be showing off just because Ge is a little interested in normal “sparring”

  20. Share knowledge vs horde knowledge continues to be a major theme in this novel. The typical ancient world would have sects who horde their own techniques and only teach it to the core disciples. And that is often their downfall if something happens to their successors.

Zuo Mo breaks that mold by freely sharing, granted only with his people because they’re supporting him. The more knowledge they have, the more likely innovations are, like the cauldron. With outsiders, he might milk them for their worth, but he’s not hesitant in sharing. Knowledge is free (well sometimes with Pu), so if he could get some benefit from it, why not?

On sharing the little yao arts techniques, they aren’t exactly secret. Little yao arts is commonly known, and the Wasteland Chessboard problems already show this new way of thinking. What Nan Yue is teaching just gives her clan a headstart.

By the time they catch up to him, he’s probably learning something else. He’s a jack of all trades but he never settles down on one thing and master it. He can’t afford to because new situations demands different skills. His specialty is in discovering new things and innovating. But then it’s his subordinates who take those things and really refine it and master them.

      1. he made no spoilers, only referred to past events and predicted that the same thing will happen in the future.
actually calling his random prediction a spoiler IS a spoiler since it indicates you read ahead and that his prediction comes true. He didn’t say “i read ahead” but rather was making it clear that those were merely his predictions based on past events

      2. Oh, I intended the asterisks to serve as censoring … … because I wanted to reply but my policy is to not give out spoilers.

      3. If he gets to the point of using any or all 500 in one combination.

        = 1220136825991110068701238785423046926253574342803192842192413588385845373153881997605496447502203281863013616477148203584163378722078177200480785205159329285477907571939330603772960859086270429174547882424912726344305670173270769461062802310452644218878789465754777149863494367781037644274033827365397471386477878495438489595537537990423241061271326984327745715546309977202781014561081188373709531016356324432987029563896628911658974769572087926928871281780070265174507768410719624390394322536422605234945850129918571501248706961568141625359056693423813008856249246891564126775654481886506593847951775360894005745238940335798476363944905313062323749066445048824665075946735862074637925184200459369692981022263971952597190945217823331756934581508552332820762820023402626907898342451712006207714640979456116127629145951237229913340169552363850942885592018727433795173014586357570828355780158735432768888680120399882384702151467605445407663535984174430480128938313896881639487469658817504506926365338175055478128640000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

  21. Wait a second, people thought it was a bad move for Nan Yue to share the little yao arts?
Theyre not exactly a secret, EVERY yao has to learn them in their society, only thing Zuo Mo did was show her their uses

  22. MC didn’t actually teach nan yue any secrets about little yao arts. He merely taught her WORK ETHIC.
Before she was dismissive of little yao arts and didn’t bother to proper study them. Now she works hard to deconstruct the little arts in the prison.

  23. This is the 2nd time Pu refers to himself as “ge”! It is official; Zuo Mo has influenced him irreversibly.

  24. .

  25. This guy is pretty stupid, he is scared of ZM, but deciedes to toy with him when he thinks ZM is in a weakend state. Thats fine, but wtf does this retard think will happen when ZM gets his strenght back…
