This was not a smash and grab. They came in without anyone noticing, and it took quite a while for anyone to notice. So they had more than enough time to steal both the grains and the talismans.
So the first question they should be asking is ‘why didn’t them steal the talismans?’ They might not be as easy to sell as the grains, but they were still valuable.
They won’t find anyone selling the grains. Because it was more aimed at hurting the other side’s finances than getting valuable things (although getting grains to support the troops’ hungry mouths is a bonus; they are currently literally eating jingshi).
