I think something is overlooked with ZM. The man is greed incarnate sure. But when he sees the weak being bullied he throws down and throws down hard. He’s been the weak guy before. He understands and he sympathizes. He’s not all “Hero of Justice,” but if he agrees with what the weak is protecting i.e. Family, honor, profit, etc. and he feels it can be at the least not a loss for his people he’ll protect those that can’t protect themselves. Plus it did say he saw all the refugees as free labor force in the chapter he started accepting them. If you go back to his Sect days you’ll remember he was annoyed and yet still impressed with the requirements to pay to grow within the sect. He thought knowledge should be free. Craziness for him starts there lol.

Aaaah! Is this author hates women! Apart from AGui, all the females xiuzhe characters that were introduced in the novel are either killed by Zuo & co. or are MIA. IMO, He played a cruel joke on readers and Pu, when he introduced Wei. She was perfect as a seductive and glamorous master, who would also kept Pu in line, And again this time. Disparity in sex ratio is huge.
Alas! This novel is more like a c**kfest! Both Zuo & I felt pity!
Having a skewed gender ratio is what a lot of people think about Fang Xiang’s novels in general.
Normally I prefer it this way since woman tend to be useless in xianxia novels. The ones here seem competent so I wouldn’t have minded it. Just as long as they didn’t push romance to hard. A lot of romances in action novels always devolve into annoying teenage shit.
It’s kinda good as well as bad.
Good in sense: no damsel in distress situation; no rape (maybe behind the scenes but not in open); all the female characters introduced were strong and capable, even few of them were jindans; all those who tried to killed Zuo, were killed by him, not a single one of them becomes his lover or spared by him, like in other novels.
Bad: no romance; female characters are just fodders; c**kfest (apologizes for profanity).
PS thank god Fang Xiang & you has good sense of humor.
I wouldn’t have a problem with it if the story at least indicated they are there. Humans at least in the real world have a 1.1:1 male:female ratio so there should be more males than females just not to the extreme we see here. For the most part I can see the lack of female characters being due to societal suppression however there are cases where that doesn’t fit. In particular the mountain Jie was extremely jarring as the population seems to have been almost completely male without any explanation why.
While the general population is closer to 1:1 it starts to skew significantly when you look at the military and if anything, this is a pugilistic society. I find it pretty consistent that we only occassionally see female xiuzhe, don’t even know if female mo exist and the yao seems to be closer to even.
( I take that back. PY’s commander was a female mo.)
So far I’m only reading this and Undefeated God of War by Fang Xiang, but UGoW has a much better ratio. He mentions families and sons, etc, so there obviously has to be enough females in the story, but I’m with the other commentor in that I’d like to see them at least mentioned now and again hehe
I have been so curious about the female beast master they captured. FX made a point to describe her I thought we would see more of her by now. Do you know if she ever makes an appearance? (Yes or No is fine, I don’t want to be too spoilery. 🙂 ) And while we’re at it, does the Crane Girl ever show up? Would she be part of Xu Ling’s Overlord’s sect?
I’m still pretty new to the Chinese Novel scene and haven’t finished one yet, so I don’t know the flow of characters (in a general sense) works yet.

Interesting that, when discussing how ‘only yuanying could kill yuanying’, the author notes their ability to escape and preserve their lives, rather than indicating the effectiveness of offense/defense.
So fighting one is more like fighting a dragon in skyrim (if the dragon AI was actually smart and played keep away instead of landing)- it is more about the fact that your slow rear end couldn’t catch him long enough to get enough hits in after the first shot, rather than the hits being ineffective.
Is ‘yuanying’ something that could be anglicised as ‘ying-yang’? I’m just curious on account of the word similarity.
No, they’re composed of completely different characters. If you read ISSTH, yuanying is translated as Nascent Soul because yuan = soul and ying = infant. Yin-yang is more a concept of the universe; yin represents feminine or dark and yang represents masculine and light.
They aren’t similar words in Chinese.

Fang Xiang uses the “he” to refer to Tenth Grade way back when he first appeared while he has always used the “it” to refer to Lil’ Pagoda and the other pets. Similarly, he sometimes uses she or it for Silly Bird.
So when do we get the name of the next stage after yuanying?
It is probably “zhanling”.
