Chapter Five Hundred and Seventy – Causes and Consequences

Luo Li’s voice was deep as he recollected the events, as though he was sleep-talking.

“The chaos rift appeared and the mo battalions invaded. They came so suddenly we did not have the time to flee. Bright Wave Jie started to gather all the major sects. The ones in charge were some people from Kun Lun and they were very strong. The sect leader and the shishu were all called over and put on the front line!”

Zuo Mo punched the floor and shattered stone flew. His fist became deeply embedded in the flooring. His features were twisted and vicious. Even though everyone had separated, but the shishu had all been good to him and, in their own way, taken care of him. Zuo Mo had command battalions and he knew that the front line was the most dangerous place. It was also where the fighting was most intense. Not many could survive.

There were only two types of people that would be sent to the front lines, one was elite troops, the other was cannon fodder.

“Ever since Eldest Shixiong disappeared from the sword cave, many groups of people from Kun Lun came to ask the sect leader about the sword cave. One time, the argument became intense and Xin Shishu almost drew his sword. After that, our sect’s position started to decline in Bright Wave Jie. Other sects started to antagonize us. The disciples started to leave.”

Luo Li’s gaze was empty and unfocused.

“The sect leader felt very depressed but the other shishu were alright. The disciples from before the expansion did not leave since days would be the same no matter where they spent it. Later on when the nearby sects came to antagonize us, Xin Shishu beat them away. No one cared too much. Was there a place that did not have conflict? It was at this time when the chaos rifts opened and the mo battalion came.”

“Kun Lun came and wanted the shishu to go to the front lines. The sect leader did not agree and said that Fourth Shigu was not strong offensively and wanted her to remain behind. Kun Lun did not agree. They surrounded the sect. Fourth Shigu eventually agreed but requested for the disciples to be kept in the rear. Kun Lun agreed.”

Luo Li’s expression suddenly became twisted.

“But who knew when the sect leader and others left, Kun Lun’s people put jinzhi on us. They said it was to prevent us from betraying them. On the road, we were attacked by a troop of mo. The people from Kun Lun forced us to go to delay the mo, otherwise, they would activate the jinzhi killing us. We could only listen and go, and then the Kun Lun people turned and ran abandoning us. Some of us died and some were wounded, the rest were captured. As a slave, I passed through the hands of several people before this mo.”

“Kun Lun!” Zuo Mo squeezed out the two words from his teeth, his eyes bloodshot. He had never thought that Kun Lun would do something this low.

“After Eldest Shixiong disappeared, Sect Leader was very distraught and his hair turned white overnight. From then on, the sect leader started to talk about many things with me. Second Shixiong, Lin Qian always suspected that you were yaomo and mentioned something about Stars in Daytime. The sect leader had heard some rumors and deliberately did not search and have you come back. Sect Leader said, he had picked you up and brought you back, if you really are … … then this was better than handing you over to Kun Lun … …”

Hearing this, Zuo Mo’s tears could not be suppressed anymore and flowed down his check. The thread of resentment that had been inside disappeared. Indescribable sorrow and regret welled up.

Luo Li was sobbing.

A moment later, Zuo Mo stopped his sorrow. He raised his head and asked, “What about the other shidi and shimei?”

“I only know that  Xiao Guo and Li Shimei are still alive. They were also captured. Shidi, you have to rescue them!” Luo Li grabbed onto Zuo Mo, his grey eyes filled with begging.

Zuo Mo’s heart hurt and he unhesitatingly nodded. He said resolutely, “I will definitely rescue them!”

He then asked, “Second Shixiong, do you know who bought them?”

Luo Li lowered his head and thought for a moment before saying, “It is a female mo, she seems to be called Princess Xia.”

“Princess Xia … …” Zuo Mo repeated a few times fearing he would forget.

It seemed he had to go investigate who this Princess Xia was.

Zuo Mo secretly cased a resting spell on Luo Li, causing Luo Li felt his eyelids become heavy and quickly slipped into sleep. Zuo Mo inspected the wounds inside Luo Li’s body and his expression became terrible.

The channels inside Luo Li’s body were shattered. It would be extremely difficult to heal such severe wounds.

“Kun Lun!”

Zuo Mo had never hated a sect so much before, never!

Ximen Ning drank his wine and listened to the report from his subordinate.

“Boss, you have great foresight, Guard Camp really entered the Great Peace City!” The subordinate was admiring in his tone.

“Haa haa, there aren’t enough people in Guard Camp. If they had some more people, they might fight Bu Heng. This group is not friendly, and their origins definitely are not simple,” Ximen Ning said with a slight smile.

“A strong dragon cannot suppress the local snake. Even if they are strong, they can only eat dust,” A Qing’s voice came.

“Haha, A Qing is right. Their origins will quickly be found. So many mo embryos, we probably are not the only ones interested. That will be fun to see when the time comes,” Ximen Ning said with a smile.

“Only when the water is cloudy can we take advantage to steal fish,” A Qing inserted at the perfect time.

Ximen Ning laughed.

“When Guard Camp entered the city, they had a standoff with Lan Tian Long.” The subordinate hurriedly narrated the information he had obtained.

“Lan Tian Long!” Ximen Ning’s brow creased.

Ximen Ning was very familiar with Lan Tian Long and naturally knew of the other’s fiery temper. Lan Tian Long had not fought? This didn’t seem like Lan Tian Long’s usual style.

The leader of Guard Camp definitely had some special trait. Otherwise, it was not possible to explain Lan Tian Long’s course of action.

Was it strength? Or background?

Ximen Ning pondered. It would be exaggerated to say that there was an individual’s strength that Lan Tian Long would be wary of. He had researched. The leader of Guard Camp was a youth not yet twenty. Could such a young youth be more powerful than Lan Tian Long?

He didn’t believe it!

So the only way would be background! Lan Tian Long recognized the background of this person so he purposefully retreated. Ximen Ning felt this was the most plausible. He had fought against Lan Tian Long before and knew while this person had a fiery temper, he wasn’t simple-minded as people assumed.

This speculation was supported by many details. For example, the strong Guard Camp was likely be the personal guard the young man’s family had sent to protect him.

Background … … what was his background?

At this time, another subordinate came in to report.

“Boss, Bu Heng has entered the city!”

Ximen Ning came out of his thoughts and laughed. “It has been very long since Great Peace City been so busy!”

———

“Is there some way to heal him?” Zuo Mo looked at Pu Yao and Wei.

Pu Yao was silent, Wei did not make a sound.

Zuo Mo instantly felt disappointed. When he agreed to rescue Xiao Guo and Li Ying Feng Shijie, he had seen the desire to die in Luo Li Shixiong’s eyes. Zuo Mo was clear. Under these circumstances, many people would lose the will to life. Their hearts were dead.

Zuo Mo didn’t know how to persuade Luo Li. He could only use the resting spell to temporarily force the other to rest.

Suddenly, Pu Yao spoke. “Maybe there is a solution. However, it is almost the same as death.”

“What solution?” Zuo Mo was like a person drowning that grabbed the life-saving reed and hurriedly asked.

Pu Yao slowly spoke, “On the battlefield in the past, I had found an incomplete spell from a xiuzhe. Read it and you will know.”

Finished speaking, he threw a ball of light at Zuo Mo.

Zuo Mo took the ball. After he read it, he finally understood what Pu Yao meant that it was not much different than death.

This was a spell called [Life-Death Lock] that was incomplete. It was very extreme. Saying it was a spell was not accurate. In Zuo Mo’s view, this was just a daring theory. The spell was not complex, and was actually very simple.

Enter the path through death!

In this speculative chapter, it assumed that a person’s death was a process, like passing through layers of biscuits, one layer after the next. Only when one broke through the last layer was one truly dead.

The person who wrote this assumed that while the upper layers were also death, it was only a fake death. A state of fake death could easily stimulate the instincts of a person. If one was able to slow down the speed at which they passed through these upper layers of death, and stimulate their potential so that their potential counterbalanced death. This required that the rate their potential increased surpassed the speed they passed through the layers of death, doing so they could totter on the edge of life and death, and completely express a person’s complete potential.

After reading this, Zuo Mo had to admire the person who wrote this.

Such a strange idea. It looked so absurd, but the author was able to explain what it meant. This person had also spent great effort to ponder how to stimulate one’s potential in the state of death to twist life and death.

It was just as Pu Yao had said. This was not any different than death. The entire chapter was speculative. In the end, even the author did not believe this spell would work and stopped writing.

Consequently, this spell was incomplete.

Zuo Mo also hesitated. From every angle, [Life-Death Lock] was so absurd, but the phrases in the chapter swirled in his mind. They seemed to hold a strange power. Many of the ideas gave him great inspiration.

He had a faint feeling that this [Life-Death Lock] was a wondrous spell.

At this time, Luo Li slowly woke up.

He opened his eyes. When he saw Zuo Mo, he forced a smile. His eyes were grey and empty, lifeless.

Xiuzhe were powerful, but if their heart was dead, their vitality would flow away faster than normal people. Because their heart was the base of all their power.

When Zuo Mo saw Luo Li’s eyes, he knew it was not good.

Shixiong wants to die?” Zuo Mo suddenly said.

Luo Li was surprised but he nodded and said honestly, “I am nothing now, my channels are all broken, my dantian destroyed. Even the best ling medicine cannot heal me. I’m satisfied now that I am able to see Shidi. I do not have anything left to connect me to this world. With this broken body, I will drag down Shidi. I will also feel life is boring and painful. Rather than suffering through that, death is an easy matter.”

Zuo Mo stared hard at Luo Li’s eyes. He saw Luo Li’s expression was the same from beginning to end and knew the other was resolved.

Shixiong, do you not want revenge against Kun Lun? Do you not want to rescue Xiao Guo and Li Ying Feng Shijie?” Zuo Mo asked.

Shidi, do not … …” Luo Li grimaced.

“I have a spell here. It is dangerous, but it may be your only hope.” At this time, Zuo Mo could only hope for the best and took out a jade scroll, [Life-Death Lock].

Luo Li assumed that Zuo Mo was trying to persuade him but did not bear to reject his goodwill so he took it.

After sweeping a glance, he froze!

    1. At the middle of the chapter i suddenly thought that ZM will end up trading all those “Mo embryo” promises to get all of the enslaved xiuzhe..
The troll level of that move would be so high! 😂

      1. Well, after he rescues the second, someone will probably make the connection and acquire the third precisely for that reason.

      2. I say making a business of selling of random low ranked and complete mo matrixes for Mo Bei.

  1. Since I at some point read a spoiler for this series that said that it wouldn’t get back to the plot of wu kong sword sect, I was a little saddened, but seriously I don’t get where that person got that view from… It’s amazing this series seriously is in my top 5 (of xianxia / xuanhuan / qihuan that is).

    1. Considering that WKSS is already destroyed, i’d say that spoiler of yours is spot on~
Assuming that the former WKSS people got free, they’ll probably integrate to become a part of ZM’s New sect

  2. Man, the author is pulling out all the stops to make sure the audience recognizes Kun Lun as the Bad Guys. I bet next we’ll find out they’re involved in whatever happened to Zuo Mo’s parents/family.

That being said, I can’t help but be curious as to what Kun Lun’s endgame is. They seem to be spending an inordinate amount of energy and using wildly circuitous routes to dance around this little no-name sword sect. Are they after something about the Sword Cave? Or is this tied to Zuo Mo’s past somehow? I can’t help but feel that the ending for this story is either going to be extremely satisfying, or a huge letdown…

Anyways, thank you very much for the chapter!

    1. It only seems circuitous to us because we know a lot of things. Remember ZM has been hidden by his sect (as per this chapter) in an unstable warring jie, then had a total body change, then teleport-ed to a random isolated jie, and then took over a jie. It isn’t easy to connect those dots when almost every place ZM has been has a collapsed social and political structure. There is no easy trail to follow here, the fact they figured out ZM was Golden Crow City’s master was pretty crazy already.

      1. @Abyssal I don’t remember the chapter, but Li Qian was talking to Wei Sheng in the sword cave about it. He said that GCC master was Zuo Mo and was using something that could be the Great Day mo physique. I think it was close to when Wei Sheng got teleported.

    2. KL’s endgame is their own survival and prestige. You only think they are after Zuo Mo and his sect because that’s the only point of view we’ve gotten.

ZM to KL : Hello. My name is Indigo Zuomoya. You killed my sect. Prepare to die.
      KL : Eternal Sunshine sect?
      ZM : No!
      KL : Spotless Mind sect?
      ZM : No!
KL : Bear Share sect? Roll Out sect? Red Blue Laser? Friendship Magic? Thundercats Roar? Mighty Morphin? Red Dwarf? One Cookie? Imaginary Land? Cloud Cuckoo? Avg Assemble? Titans Go? Yabba Dabba Doo? Split Up & Search? Kill Kenny? Spotted Pikachu? Spiritual Balance? Angry Crow? Immortality & Healing? Hungry crane? Slumbering Bear? Mad Monkey? Super Moose?
ZM : What was that last one?
      KL : Angry Crow?
ZM : Hello. My name is Indigo Zuomoya. You killed my sect and a bunch of others. Prepare to die.

      1. Zuo Mo: . . .
Zuo Mo: “So, you are telling ME that YOU killed MY sect and can’t even remember them?”
KL thinks for a while:”…Yep. Nothing comes to mind”
        Zuo Mo:”Not even a bit?”
        KL:”Sorry, no, nothing.”
Zuo Mo:”Damn, that’s too bad. It kind of makes the whole atmosphere feel flat and lame…you know? Can’t you act like you remember them? To make this more dramatic?”
        KL:”If it helps?”
Zuo Mo:”Good, thanks. Now I can kill you with peaceful mind.”
        KL:”Always at your service.”
Zuo Mo:”Let’s get things rolling…” including heads.

    3. Yeah, it all seems like a bit much. Like, are 99% of all xiuzhe (and yao, and mo) just huge assholes who don’t spare any thought for other people if it lets them keep their little life?

  3. Which foreshadow are you referring too?

I really don’t remember who the people he’s supposed to rescue are. Are either of them his quasi-disciple?

      1. There are probably a bunch of his old sect mates alive but neither Zuo Mo or Luo Li care to remember him. Princess Xia may have purchased all 100 xiuzhe girls captured. For all we know, there were probably 100 former sect mates in the cage right next to Luo Li that ZM never glanced at or recognized.

        ———————————————–

No idea what the foreshadow comment refers to.

  4. “As a slave, I passed through the hands of several people before this mo.” I know he started straightening out the last time we saw him. Though this feels like karma coming back to bite him for killing those xiu slaves.

    1. I’m confused, when did he killed xiu slaves? AFIK, he was Eldest’ Shixiong master before he breakthrough and finally become Eldest but Luo Li just treated him indifferently before, a little hostility until he finally accepted him and Zuo Mo’s ability and ditch his girlfriend. Xiu slaves seems to be introduced in the Escape from Little Mountain Jie arc, at Wu Kong Sword Sect and surroundings, the poor like Zuo Mo are outer students or workers at cities, no slaves yet.

      1. Before Zuo Mo had the duel with Luo Li, one of the others gave him a scroll of Luo Li putting down a rebellion on the jingshi mine.

  5. “but the shishu had all been good to him”
He must have gotten brain damage and lost some memories from all the fighting, since he keeps thinking that they treated him good.

    1. In the grand scheme of things they treated him pretty well. They dropped a ton of resources on him and thought they were doing what was best for him.

      1. They forced him to do what he dident want to, and literaly tortured him several times, as a way to make him a sword cultivator.

      2. They viewed it from the view point of a parent knowing better then a child. Is a parent forcing his child to eat his dinner, brush his teeth and go to bed when the child doesn’t want to torture?

      3. Or more comparitively. It was a sword xiuzhe world. Is a parent forcing their child to learn English in America when the child wants to learn Spanish a form of torture?

      4. You cant compare what they did to him, with a parent making a child do basic things.
1: He wasent a child, and had already lived fine on his own, without getting any help from them.
2: They never really thought about him, they only thought about what would be best for them, and forced him onto that path. Without considering what his plans or diseres were.
3: The only reason he stayed at a sword sect like theirs, and did not chose another that would have taken him in with open arms and treat him much better without forcing him into becoming someone else and punishing him constanly for no reason. Was because he was gratefull to the sect head, and not because he was practically fund of becoming a sword xiu.

    2. Yeah, and Zuo Mo has clubbed his followers they have brain damage when he used them to create the Golden Crow City just because he didn’t want to pay tax out of Little Mountain Jie to that Clear Sky Forefather Jindan that they followed him so faithfully.

Really, dude, one’s little treatment for others may means A LOT for the other party when it’s the difference between life or death, and if that doesn’t convince you, you could just refuse their offer when you’re going to die just because there’s not enough in the offering (sincerity or whatever you think they’re lacking).

We in the other hand prefers to think that we’d like repay our debt when we can.

    3. I think he means it in the sense that he was taken in as an outer sect disciple back when he first was found. He had no memories at all, and his cultivation was very negligible, showing absolutely no sign of promise. The sect leader let him join despite having no background or identity, which isn’t something super amazing since he was not a threat were he to be malicious, but it’s still not something absolutely anyone would do.

      1. Yeah but just the fame and money ZM brought to the sect was a much bigger repayment, than just taking a kid and throwing him to the bottom of the sect and never giving a s*** about him anymore. Its fine that he feels appreciative of the sect for taking him in, but i dont get why he makes it seems like it was such perfect place like a heaven. When they never really treated him that good.

      2. The elders didn’t treat him that well, although ultimately they thought they were doing the best for him, wrong as they were, but there were people who cared for him and he cared for, like Xiao Guo and Li Ying Feng.

      3. Yeah i agree that he had some good friends, and im fine that he wants to help them. Since thats the right thing to do.

  6. Is this the first modern time non-ancient-grandpa (aka Pu Yao) confirmation we’ve had that just because someone can cultivate ling spells doesn’t automatically make people assume they are xiuzhe (and the same for consciousness = yao, matrix = mo).

  7. “…It assumed that a person’s death was a process, like passing through layers of biscuits…”

So you’re saying that death is the macaroon of the soul?

      1. So if you eat the regenerating multilayered chesecake too fast, the cake is gonna disappear, while if you’re patient enough, you can get infinite amount of chesecake?!

  8. Never like the big sects, linda feel like there’s a bigger reason for them hunting the ‘classics’
    Thank you for the chapter!

  9. A shame with luo li’s techniques. I rather like what he achieved with his version of the void scripture. It’s not the ‘original’ scripture like Shixiong’s was, but it it has its own flavor and even Xin shishu praised it.

I wonder what technique will be born out of this life-death lock

  10. Wooo his masters dont take him back because they dont want him to be captured. Sorry I misjudged you all.

But still this is just what you deserve luo li. Back then you torment alot of xiu slaves. Im happy you get your just dwsser

    1. Obviously this [Life-Death Lock] has already been used by Wei Sheng instinctively. How else did he breakthrough against that scorpion yao beast? It’s just a classic MC power-up rendered into a spell anyone can use successfully if they’re willing to risk their life.

      1. It wasn’t scorpion “yao” beast, but scorpion “fiendish” beast.

  11. ‘ “Kun Lun!” Zuo Mo squeezed out the two words from his teeth, his eyes bloodshot. — “Kun Lun!” Zuo Mo had never hated a sect so much before, never!’

    – Good job…no, FABULOUS job, Kun Lun. If Turtle Island folks disliked you before – and hence slaughtered your troops indiscriminately…What will they do to you now that they seriously despise, loathe and viciously hate you? Hmmmmmm, I wonder~~~ Lil’Miss just might give you a pretty lil’SMILE 🙂

    1. They killed one battalion in a battle. To the last man. That’s not really ‘slaughtering indiscriminately’ . Slaughtering indiscriminately would be killing many battalions or wandering into ‘Kun Lun’ lands and slaughtering everyone they want to.

      1. Well I meant ‘indiscriminate’ as ‘lacking in care, judgment, selectivity’…They did not select who to kill in the Kun Lun force they met. They killed them all. Without care or selection. Whether or not all those soldiers had attacked them or not. All of them. I would say that is ‘indiscriminant’…and killing them with that Butcher Wheel attack…what else do you call that but ‘slaughter’? Whether or not it was a battle it was a very brutal one. Not that Kun Lun didn’t deserve it or anything…And if there actually was more than one Kun Lun force…they would have killed them all if that was what was needed to get out of the situation.

And – as a cherry on the top – there is a thing called ‘hyperbole’. ‘It is the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech. It emphasizes, evokes strong feelings, and creates strong impressions. As a figure of speech, it is usually not meant to be taken literally’.

Phew, that got long. Anyway. I did think about what I wrote before I wrote it…But maybe the language barrier does get in the way sometimes…We may express things differently and understand them differently.

  12. Oh yeah! This is gooood. I wait in breathless anticipation, I love it when the mc holds hatred. This means revenge is going to come. Kun lun has done messed up.

  13. Kun Lun have forged a death contract and Zuo Mo will collect and interestingly it gives Zuo Mo a reason he can use with the Mo why he cares about Xiuzhe slaves. With the Mo culture of power above all else and blood debts etc. This surprisingly seems to give him grounds to argue from that doesn’t make him look like a weirdo in Mo society. I.e. a Mo who was saved by Xiuzhe and wants to return the favor to that small group now that he has the strength to back it up rather than a traitor to all Mo.

Vengeance is coming like a tide start wetting your pants Kun Lun if you know what is good for you Zuo Mo will destroy you to the last and bleed your treasuries dry!

  14. very distraught impacted > remove either “distraught” or “impacted”, they mean the same thing
    |
then it is this was > then this was
    |
Luo Li to felt his eyelids > feel his eyelids
    |
was individual’s strength > was an individual’s strength

any left to connect > anything left to connect

    Thanks for the chapter.

  15. Thanks for the chapter WYHCWE and WanderingGummiOfDoom! Kun Lun just started a time bomb and they don’t even know it yet. Wonder what level Zuo Mo’s faction will reach before they attack Kun Lun.

  16. wu kong sect coming back makes me remember this girl who exchanged paper crane messages with zuo mo back when he was still ling farming. was she ever mentioned again?

  17. the true reason why luo li wants to die if he can’t cultivate is because he’d rather die than be separated from his sword spirit 😉

  19. Wow? So the reason the Sect Leader had him essentially abandoned was really to protect him from Kun Lun’s suspicions? That…is touching, man!!

  20. Rereading this my rotten mind just think about the mo saying luo li is handsome and the state of wanting death luo li became.

I want to read the fanfic.
