Chapter Five Hundred and Ninety Seven – Shen Power Breathing
While people waited for the three princesses to reach Great Peace City, Zuo Mo was in a disheveled state engraving mo matrixes for the Sin Battalion. Helping more than three thousand members of Sin Battalion was like an ocean that he could not see the end of! They were the same mo matrixes that he repeated made and then awakened. After repeating hundreds of them, he knew what to do even if did so with his eyes closed. After doing more than five hundred, he wanted to throw up!
However, he quickly found a miraculous method. He remembered that when he used the Fire Fist of the First Heavenly Stem, his mo physique would burn while his ling power and spiritual consciousness would continue to permeate into his body.
He had found that when this state was maintained for a while, his shen power would silently enter his head. He would enter a wondrous state where his mind was clear and without any emotion. All of his emotions seemed separate from him while his body and consciousness attained a very terrifying level of control.
In this state, Zuo Mo’s every movement was flawless. Even his shen power that he usually struggled to manipulate was able to be manipulated to do tasks of great difficulty.
In this state, Zuo Mo was like the perfect mo puppet and his efficiency was several times higher than previously.
He processed the Sin Battalion members one after the other, sending out of his room with their jinzhi removed. All the people watching were shocked by his speed. They seemed to have a feeling that Zuo Mo was completing the process as easily as drinking water.
In a short span of ten days, Zuo Mo had finished all the work!

Shu Long and the others heard the noise inside the room. They paled and pushed open the room. When they went to go examine Zuo Mo, Ceng Lian’er suddenly appeared. “It would be best if you do not touch him!”
Seeing the untrusting gazes of Shu Long and the others. She did not explain and said, “Wait for a moment and you will see.”
As expected, just as she finished speaking, faint golden light came out of Zuo Mo’s body. This layer of golden light was very faint. If it was not that the light in the room was very dim, this layer of light would be very hard to detect.
The weak light seemed to brighten and dim in turn as though it was breathing.
Shu Long and the others carefully and quietly moved about afraid they would disturb Zuo Mo. After Ceng Lian’er stopped them even the stupidest person understood that what was happening was not a bad thing.
Ceng Lian’er looked at Zuo Mo and a complex expression flashed across her face.
She could not understand why this youth that appeared foolish, and did not possess an inheritance technique as complete as hers was both ahead and advancing faster than her?
Shen power. These two words had buried mountains of bones. How many geniuses had fallen under these two words and never obtained anything?
Even an astounding genius like Qi Diao Yu was stuck outside the entryway and was unable to enter.
Yet Zuo Mo had already reached the level of “Shen Power Breathing!”
Zuo Mo probably did not know what “Shen Power Breathing” was but Ceng Lian’er who had a more complete inheritance knew that “Shen Power Breathing” was the sign that his shen power had had an initial breakthrough.
There had only been two ancestors in her lineage of teachers that had completed ”Shen Power Breathing.” This was also why she had received such complete inheritance of knowledge.
She had not yet solved the mystery of the Shifting Star Sands and now he had achieved shen power breathing in front of her.
Ceng Lian’er could not help but feel slightly demotivated. Maybe this youth that did not look very unique contained a monster inside!

Many mo furiously flew towards the stele forest. There was joy on their faces, shock, and faint terror. After so many years had past and nothing like this had ever occurred to the Great Peace Mo Skill Steles.
Ceng Lian’er seemed to be suddenly struck by lightning as she abruptly turned her head to look down—in the room below, the light flowing on Zuo Mo’s body brightened and dimmed at the same rhythm!

“Finally, we are going to reach Great Peace City.” Princess Xia stretched. The light gossamer silk was unable to conceal her fine figure. The exaggerated curves, the lazy and seductive expression on her face. It could cause any man to unconsciously swallow.

In a short span of one day, the winds had suddenly shifted.
In the previous conflicts the yao had been at a disadvantage, but this sudden shift was without warning and Tian Huan and Xi Xuan both suffered great losses.
Xi Xuan lost four jie but that did not harm their core strength. In comparison, Tian Huan’s hearts were burning. The loss of Gongye Xiao Rong would be a great loss for them.
In response, Tian Huan immediately put pressure on multiple battle fronts.
When an enormous entity like Tian Huan moved at full power, the forces it could gather was terrifying. In a short six days, it defeated six jie. Six passages suddenly appeared between Tian Huan and the mo realm but each was still very far from Gongye Xiao Rong.
Xi Xuan was also furious about the loss of the four jie. On one front, they sent famous generals to kill Liang Wei Battalion and on the other, they sent supplies and reinforcements to Gu Liang Dao.
Gu Liang Dao, whose forces expanded in power, did not disappoint Xi Xuan. He instantly surrounded the mo that he had been facing and then ambushed the mo battalion reinforcements that had come.
Instantly, all barriers to Gu Liang Do’s advancement disappeared.
Gu Liang Dao Battalion moved in and captured four jie!
The battle situation suddenly reached a climax without anyone prepared for it!
Translator Ramblings: So much happening in the world … … the thing to remember about Liang Wei vs people like Gu Liang Dao and Gongye Xiao Rong is that Liang Wei is leading the remnants of his forces and what is essentially regular military. The other battle generals are leading better-trained and equipped forces.

I dont hate Ceng Lian’er. While I cant say I like her, there is no reason to really hate her…if anything, I think her bad points are that she seems quite pridefull of her due to her shen heritage and she looks down to Zuo Mo (even though the heritage almost killed her and it was him who saved her XD ). But I think that will change as she is converted to a Zuo Mo fangirl after seem every crazy thing he does XD.
Ceng Lian’er basically forced that paired cultivation and her personality doesn’t seem to be the good kind. She is neither honest or open to Zuo Mo and is constantly putting on a front of being totally undisturbed by anything and everything while seemingly superior to everybody else.
She didnt force him. Her dad forced him to treat her, but nobody could have predicted they’d end up in that situation.
She should be more frank to Zuo Mo about what happened with Qi Dian Yu, but Zuo Mo isnt honest with her either. Truly, he gave her the cold shoulder first. I don’t blame her for needing more time to trust him.
I’m pretty sure that treatment side effect was somehow started by her once she felt his shen power and didn’t simply happen. She’s far too okay with it.
Zuo Mo has no reason to be honest with her, she forced herself on him, not the other way around. It’s her turn to step up and establish a pond as she is the one following him. He’s only allowing it because of the thread of the backlash of the death of your paired cultivation partner

It may be less a matter of actually disliking her, and more being annoyed because she doesn’t have enough explanation. She doesn’t seem to have goals, besides leeching off Zuo Mo and making sure he doesn’t die stupidly.
Right now, her viewpoint mostly just shows how awesome Zuo Mo is – but her attitude doesn’t match that, so she feels weirdly antagonist to the reader’s feelings, since we don’t know her goals or backstory well enough for that to make much sense.
Well, that’s my thoughts as a reader and author. She’s probably got purpose (unless she just vanishes like the paper-crane girl) so when that shows, she’ll likely be more understandable, if not sympathetic.

basically I see the hate problem as it’s her attitude that’s the issue. Her pride is getting in the way of her asking questions and making deals. She needs old knowledge and he needs more modern information they should help one another but neither side is willing to give at this point it creates frustration.

I kinda like Ceng Lian’er btw, I guess some ppl dont like her because Zuo Mo is against her… even in his actual situation… there is the other girl too.
I think people resent that she forced her way into the group. Or possibly she interferes with some ‘ship in their minds. I don’t mind her personally, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if she stabbed ZM in the back the moment it became more profitable to do so than to continue to follow him. Should that happen, then I’ll worry about hating her then.
All in all, it sounded like not much changed with the war, on the grand scale of things. Well, other than the number of people on all sides decreasing. But there will always be as many of them as the author needs, so its hard to care about them.
I wonder what Lil’ Miss’ plan is if that guy’s faction comes looking for vengeance? He’s strong, but he’s not strong enough to take on the entire faction if they decided to get serious and send a few yuan ying with their battalion(s) or something.
I wonder what was going through the head of the guy that created those steles? He had to know that having them act like a beacon notifying the world of shen power users in the city would basically be guarantying the death of anyone who actually managed to understand what he was trying to tell them. Or was that the plan? Did he not want anyone practicing shen power any more for some reason?
She really should just talk to him about his cultivation. He’s a pretty open guy when it comes to sharing cultivation knowledge. Sure, his answers might not be the most helpful, but it might still point her in the right direction. Which, I tend to think is studying all the powers. By the look of things, she only studied mo and shen and hasn’t bothered with the other two.
I think as of my guessing: Shi Zi Ming already thought…that his “Great Peace City” was due to chaos. So in return of Shen Power appearing,chaos flows through the city. People that seek the end of Shen Power gets revealed and get attacked. Peace and Chaos need to be together.
so far she is just there for word count padding. i get that it is hard to build up a character 2k chapters in but its a bit disagreeable when you know the end result has to be that character falling into line.

– These guys, they never learn *shakes head* They always think that one must have a powerful sect at their back before one can be confident and not fear the big sects. Though that might be just something they use as excuse for their own failures. Like:”Oooh, we lost, but the other had big sect backing them so it’s no wonder we could not do it. But if we had our super elites, no doubt we would have won…” Yeah, keep thelling yourselves that, Lil’Miss will fix that attitude for you. Gladly 🙂
Actually, I think that it was more reasonable the other way. Only great powers can face other great powers without fear, for without equal power the other party would only be crushed. It’s true that Zuo Mo’s party are freaks, but even Zuo Mo had to hide his real name and use Xiao Mo Ge instead for fears of xiu spy leaking his envolvement in yaomo business.
It’s just that Lil’ Miss is not exactly right in his head that he’s not afraid of offending powers that able to take over jies when they put their real strength and even anticipating the conflict. Just imagine you have a trigger happy general in custody of nuclear arsenal and you’d be more than just afraid.
What I’m disliking the most is them underestimating the courage of individuals and skills that give that one confidence. Sure, if you are alone, it may not matter if you are brave or talented, you may still get crushed. But never the less there’s power in individual acts of courage too.
Though Zuo Mo’s Clan is a ragtag group, they have enough innovative power to turn the world up side down one jie at the time. And the Great Sects will be left wondering what chaotic whirlwind just passed by. It’s high time someone dusted off the rigid thinking of the Great Sects.

I wish there was more of this in the novel. Like that time they met a yao girl who used magic to make herself attractive, and Nan Yue was totally charmed by her. Remember?
WoC is an extraordinary piece of work, brilliantly written, the best xianxia story I have ever read. If I had to suggest some kind of improvement to make it even better, I guess it would be: NEED MOAR YURI. 😉

Agreed. I totally love Ceng Lian’er. The story needed someone like her to take care of A Gui when Zuo Mo is busy. Remember how she took A Gui to the arena to watch the duel battle? Zuo Mo didn’t even think of that, he would have left A Gui vegetating at the camp. The two girls make a great combo.
Mind you, I should mention that, unlike other readers, I don’t see Ceng Lian’er as a rival of A Gui because I don’t ship Zuo Mo and A Gui. My ship has always been Zuo Mo and Xiao Guo. <3
(And now Xiao Guo will return to the story, as soon as they rescue her from the clutches of Princess Xia! Hurray, at last!)
I don’t like Ceng Lian’er because of her attitude. She keeps posturing as some sort of heaven sent daughter even though she’d be dead if it wasn’t for Ge. Zuo Mo pretty much saved her life and yet she takes it in stride, as if it was his duty to do so. The bitch never even thanked him… Then here she is jealous of Ge because he has shen power even without a legacy and keeps doing better than her. The girl needs to come to terms with reality as she’s too naive in her thinking the world revolves around her. Thankfully the last couple chapters have helped in egging her on to admittance of Ge’s brilliance but she’s still too stuck up for me. 😛
Well, if you’re raised thinking you’re the center of the universe (she is center of daddy’s universe) then it’s hard to think that you might not be. I’m okay with her starting out this way, we still have 318(?) chapters for her character to develop.

Nah, actually she’s quite good. Giving passive buff, free mercenaries, also helped Zuo Mo sometimes (like after dueling invisible guy). The only drawback is… soul-link. She die Ge die.
Hmm ppl don’t like ceng-girl? Might be the pair cultivating thing… in most novels that implies couple-up at least physically. Not to mention his life is forcibly linked with hers too and its not the issue of her lack of romantic interest in him, but i guess ppl don’t like the fact that she may be a hazard to him because of that link.

I actually like Ceng Lian’er. For one, I dislike almost every female in wuxia. In fact, I have dropped almost every story I’ve read because of the females. I for one like the females in this story because there is no unrealistic love story being shoved down our throats and none of the females are weak or intrude on the progression of the story- yet. They start of strong, fall for the MC and then become objects of rescue as the MC overpowers people nine levels above him just cause.

Good question translator. The way my cynic self sees it, these kind of stories don’t have good female characters, so when a rare one who has her own motivations shows up, it subconciously incites antagonism for not following the pattern.
Do people get jealous of fictional characters? Maybe it’s because Ceng-er is very beautiful, smart and talented…
