Chapter Forty-Six: Change in Opinion

When Hua Xi Wan returned to the wang fu, she recalled the children in Lin Ping Junzhu Fu and felt slightly uncomfortable. She did not like Lin Ping Junzhu, but she had different opinions about the children.

“Bai Xia, prepare some plentiful gifts and send them to the junzhu fu.” Hua Xi Wan felt as though her heart was suffocating. “Children are innocent.”

“Yes.” Bai Xia detected that her mistress’ expression was not right and did not ask many questions. She turned and prepared to find gifts for children.

“Bai Xia Jie.” Hong Ying met Bai Xia as she came down the corridor with tea and refreshments. Seeing the other have a serious expression, she asked worriedly, “What happened?”

“Nothing.” Bai Xia smiled faintly and shook her head. She then said in a low voice, “Mistress might not be in a good mood; serve her carefully.” She did not understand what was going on, but it definitely had something to do with Lin Ping Junzhu Fu.

“Don’t worry, Wang Ye returned to the fu just now. I heard Chief Steward Mu say that his expression is well.” Hong Ying whispered next to Bai Xia’s ear, “Maybe he will come shortly.”

Bai Xia glared at her. “Do not speak nonsense.” Seeing Hong Ying’s expression become moderate, she said, “Did you forget the example of Lu Zhu?”

“I don’t have the kind of thoughts that she did,” Hong Ying muttered, but her expression became serious. As a servant, no matter how much face they had, it was given to them by their master. If their master did not have face, what benefit would they get?

Just as the two finished speaking, they saw Wang Ye walking in this direction. They hurriedly moved to the side, bowed their heads and curtsied.

Yan Jin Qiu strode past them into the room. When he entered, he saw that Hua Xi Wan’s expression was dim. He walked next to her and asked in a light voice, “What is it?”

“I do not feel good thinking about Lin Ping Junzhu’s two children.” Hua Xi Wan forced a smile. With their present relationship, if she and Yan Jin Qiu had children in the future, she didn’t know how much hardship her children would experience. If she could not give the children a good environment, it was better not to have them.

“So that is what it is. Those two have nursemaids and servants to take care of them. In their education, they will have teachers or etiquette mistresses. Who would dare to neglect them?” Yan Jin Qiu was not concerned because he had grown up in this way. “If you are worried, you can just prepare some things that children use and send them over.”

Hearing this, Hua Xi Wan nodded. She saw that there were faint shadows under his eyes and pressed her fingers to the corner of his eye. “Did you now rest well last night?” Last night, Yan Jin Qiu had rested in the study, so Hua Xi Wan did not know when he went to sleep. However, seeing Yan Jin Qiu not react at all and allowing her to touch the corner of his eye, Hua Xi Wan had complicated feelings. Normal people would unconsciously put a hand up when other people came near their eyes. Yan Jin Qiu’s response meant that either he really thought of her as someone close, or that he was able to act at such a high level.

Yan Jin Qiu gripped her hand and pressed it to the side of his face. He laughed soundlessly and said, “Nothing, there were some matters last night, so I slept later.” Finishing, he looked pleadingly at Hua Xi Wan. “It is not comfortable sleeping in the study.”

Seeing this, Hua Xi Wan reached out with her other hand to pat his head. “Then I will have the servants put down a softer mattress.”

Seeing her act dumb, Yan Jin Qiu gathered her up in his arms. “No, even the softest mattress is not as comfortable as where you sleep.”

Hua Xi Wan poked his face. “Do not pout.”

Yan Jin Qiu’s head nuzzled Hua Xi Wan’s shoulder. Hua Xi Wan could only helplessly pat his back.

The common saying was that a great man could submit or stand tall as needed. This was probably how the man in her arms was acting.

The servants in the room lowered their heads and closed their eyes. They chose to not look at Wang Ye pouting at Wang Fei. In reality, they could not bear to even look at this. What happened to the wang ye who was warm, elegant and poised?

As expected, in front of beauty, even a man as hard as steel would be wrapped around the fingers of the beauty.

Hong Ying saw the servants in the room come out. She looked at the tea and refreshments in her hand and then left with a smile.

“Hong Ying Jie.”

When she had walked half of the way, she was called by a servant in green robes. She looked closely at the other and recognized that she was someone who had duties at the second gate. “Is there a matter?”

The green-robed servant girl looked around and made sure that there was no one around before she lowered her voice and said, “Xiao Yu in my room has not been right recently. Last night, I heard her talk in her sleep and mentioning Wang Fei. Meimei doesn’t dare to speculate what is going on and has come to report to Jiejie.”

She lived in the same room as Xiao Yu. If Xiao Yu really did something outrageous, and the matter was exposed, she would be punished by association. It was better to report it early. Even if she was not rewarded for this, she could save herself. She had parents and siblings, so she did not dare risk it.

Hong Ying saw that this servant girl’s expression did not seem fake and nodded. She said, “I know. Go back and make sure that she does not find out that you said this to me. If something else happens, you have to tell us.” She thought and then added, “You can also tell Chief Steward Mu.”

“Yes.” The green-robed servant girl bobbed at Hong Ying. Seeing that no one was around, she hurriedly left.

Hong Ying gave the tray to a servant girl who passed by and went to find Mu Tong who was lecturing people. She looked at the junior taijian who was shrunken down and didn’t dare to breathe out of fright of Mu Tong. She smiled and said, “Chief Steward Mu, you are busy?”

“It is Miss Hong Ying—please sit, please sit.” A smile instantly hung on Mu Tong’s face. He indicated for Hong Ying to sit next to the stone table and ordered someone to get tea.

“Mu gonggong, there is no need to go such trouble. I will say a few words and then leave.” Hong Ying looked at the people in the surroundings. “Let’s have these people attend to their own duties.”

Mu Tong was a smart person and naturally understood that what Hong Ying was going to say was not something for other people’s ears. He said, “Didn’t you hear Miss Hong Ying’s words—what are you standing around for?”

After those people left, Mu Tong said with a smile, “What good matter has made Miss Hong Ying come personally?”

“Mu gonggong is too polite; it is not a major matter. However, you are the chief steward and I have to speak of this matter to you.” Hong Ying explained the matter and then said, “Wang Fei still needs me to be there, so I will leave first.”

“Miss Hong Ying, walk slowly.” Mu Tong walked a few steps with her out of curiosity. After Hong Ying’s figure disappeared, the smile on his face faded. Wang Fei’s servant girls were not simple. This matter appeared simple, but in reality, it was very troublesome. It was just talking in one’s sleep and could not be said to be accurate. But if they did not do anything, there was the fear that something could happen. So they gave the matter to him and ended their own connection. However, he could not say no. In the eyes of other people, Wang Fei’s people remembering to report matters to him was a sign that they respected him.

Mu Tong thought and then decided to imprison the servant girl called Xiao Yu. No matter what was going on with her, he would first keep her locked up for a few days to see if there was anything suspicious or if she had any other accomplices.

In the main rooms, Yan Jin Qiu and Hua Xi Wan were sitting cross-legged without any posture on the chaise. There was a pile of precious stones and jade pendants in front of them.

“This jade pendant is pretty.” Hua Xi Wan took the jade pendant and tested it on Yan Jin Qiu’s waist. Then she said, “But the color is too plain.”

Yan Jin Qiu smiled and said, “Isn’t your attire plain as well?”

Hua Xi Wan put down the jade pendant and took out from the pile a hairpin that was meant for a male. The mutton-fat while jade was carved in the form of a lucky cloud. It was a very simple carving, but the craftsmanship was very good. “Lin Ping Junma is not close to us, but he was our brother-in-law. If our attire is too bright, wouldn’t that break etiquette?”

Yan Jin Qiu sighed and then looked at Hua Xi Wan who was picking through the different precious stones. He somehow said what he actually thought inside. “This person is a little man who was skilled in currying favor, but she wanted to marry him even under the threat of death. That year, not long after she married, Father-Wang passed away. The Emperor used this chance to demote the wang fu when I inherited it. But even so, the outside had rumors that said the sons and daughters of the Xian Wang branch were unfilial and overly romantic. It would have been fine if that was just it. But after she married to Jiang City, she never communicated back. In her eyes, we are probably the large stick that tried and failed to separate the two lovebirds.”

Hua Xi Wan’s movements stilled. She watched Yan Jin Qiu and did not speak.

“These years, Luo Zhong Zheng has constantly put up memorandums to the Emperor for him to suppress the side branches of the Imperial House. This suits the Emperor’s appetite.” Yan Jin Qiu laughed coldly. “And this good sister of mine actually wrote a letter for me to cooperate with Luo Zhong Zheng’s suggestion. It is so humorous. Without our wang fu, what is her junzhu position? But she is so naïve that she betrays her relatives for this, and as long as that man is good to her, it is worth it to sacrifice anything.”

Hua Xi Wan heard a thread of exhaustion and indifference from Yan Jin Qiu’s words. She couldn’t help but think, if she was Yan Jin Qiu, she probably would not feel much for this sister. It would be amazing if she did not feel hate.

“Is it because of this that Junzhu has distanced herself from our fu?” Hua Xi Wan put her hands onto his hands and smiled comfortingly at him.

“There is no relationship where she can always demand things and not repay.” Yan Jin Qiu’s tone was extremely indifferent. “I did not agree to what she wanted, so she naturally feels hate.”

Hua Xi Wan’s brow imperceptibly creased. This Lin Ping Junzhu was slightly selfish and stupid.

“If that is the case, then we shall just do as our hearts tell us.” Hua Xi Wan gripped Yan Jin Qiu’s hands. “Right now, you and she both have your own families—who can take care of the other for an entire lifetime?”

Yan Jin Qiu laughed lowly. He gripped her hands back and said warmly, “I just knew that you would understand my thoughts. Only Xi Wan knows me in this world.”

Hua Xi Wan’s eyes swirled with light and she smiled. “Jin Qiu’s chest is as deep as the mountain is tall—how can you be sure that I understand your thoughts?” It probably was that the mood right now was too good, or maybe it was the death of Lin Ping Junma that caused Hua Xi Wan to feel that there was nothing that people did not dare to say or do in this world. A lifetime was hard and short; she had to live more freely.

Yan Jin Qiu looked at her with both eyes, his index finger lightly drawing across her brow. He suddenly laughed.

“I had thought that you would not ask this…”

Translator Ramblings: I was re-reading To Be A Virtuous Wife and I’ve realized how much more chatty Yan Jin Qiu is in comparison to He Heng. Qu Qing Ju and He Heng just flirt a lot while everything else remains unspoken and hidden in double speak. Hua Xi Wan and Yan Jin Qiu are positively chatterboxes in comparison. Or maybe this is my bias of having forgotten most of TBVW speaking.

  1. **In the main rooms, Yan Jin Qiu and Hua Xi Wan were sitting cross-legged without any posture on the chaise. There was a pile of precious stones and jade pendants in front of them.**

I just love how relaxed these scene is.

**But after she married to Jiang City, she never communicated back. In her eyes, we are probably the large stick that tried and failed to separate the two lovebirds.”**

On another note, she must have been so desperate to get out of the fu and enter a life she thought she deserved. Still, to go against your family like that when they didn’t seem to have deserved it is really low. How incredibly foolish.

**“Jin Qiu’s chest is as deep as the mountain is tall—how can you be sure that I understand your thoughts?”

“I had thought that you would not ask this…”**

I find this amusing. He’s probably surprised coz he feels like she knows him so well and yet she blatantly says something like this.

I know I’m skipping over all the maid issues but I found their interaction to be so nice. Especially since YJQ seems more open as we get further into the story. It makes the story more interesting. I’m sure he feels glad that he found a wife he could rely on. Though, as we can see, not quite completely but enough that he doesn’t have to worry about whether or not she knows how to conduct herself in public. Even in the confines of their home in front of servants.

I really like my Tuesdays because of this story. Thank you for the double release again today! Will look forward to next week again 😀

  2. Well in he heng case, he’s just there to satisfy qu qingju i suppose. Hahaha
Qu qingju also didn’t ask much, she just guard her own domain. And in the early part at least 1/3 of the screentime showed the daily life of rui wang.

  3. If you already get the man you want, cut connection with them, who are you to hinder the family you abandoned? As a modern woman I support someone who have courage to marry the man she wants, but shouldn’t she got some conscience she had been a bad daughter in the process and at least mind herself to not give them further trouble?
Not to mention, this is a brother not the parents who tried to hinder her love. Tragic life you get there lady, but not even I can sympathize with you for purposely slapping your own family’s face.
As Yan Jin Qiu said, his sister should’ve foreseen karma *snicker* would come back biting her. With supporting that kind of policy that pressuring even her own blood family, does she expect her brother or other imperial family branch would leave her family be in peace? If anything what just happened to her husband is long time coming. It’s been said, how the emperor worry because his son is incompetent but his nephews are. Surely this Junma of hers should know one of these days he would get killed for hindering them.

The Emperor could rage all he wanted, but really… he fears his nephews but provoking them seems like asking those competent nephews to rebel. His son is useless, a very precarious omen. Once he is dead, it would be too easy to replace this idiot.

  5. They are communicating with each other more and more ヽ( ★ω★)ノ
..but I wonder what’s wrong with that other servant?

Thank you for the chapter ╰(✧∇✧)╯fufu

  6. Yes i agree with you. TBVW has a lot more hidden agenda between QQJ and HH. The simply work with their mind even HH’s plan, QQJ just guessing with her smart mind.

I like YJQ because the more you know him, the more you understand him and he will open up himself. I know he trust HXW now. Seems like he doesn’t slightly doubt with HXW about his plan or thinking. Like he said before what is the thing that husband and wife can not talk?

Anyway thank you for the chapter. I have waiting the update all the time

  7. Lesson #2
Looking out for yourself / being selfish first requires one to be smart about it and not blinded by immediate pleasure only to strangle yourself later with it.
    ————-

To be fair the very theme of Qu Qing Ju’s story was that love is better shown through actions over time instead of flowery words so yeah lol

And I suppose there’s a lot more intrigue in Hua Xi Wan’s story given the different starting point of He Heng and Yan Jin Qiu and that requires more plain dialogue between the main couple.
He Heng’s mostly got his plot course laid out from the very beginning and pretty much only needed Qu Qing Ju to not be on his way (tho she went above and beyond lol) so aside with flirting with each other and the occasional heart to heart there really isn’t any need for constantly probing (heh) and explaining to each other

As for which series is better.. well it’s not fair to judge yet atm especially plot wise and what not when one is still unfinished so comments on the FL only.
Although I just have to mention how I love Qu Qing Ju’s barbed subtlety and doublespeaking smarts. She’s also such an unmatched charismatic temptress lol.
Hua Xi Wan in comparison I feel is the more straightforward in temperament even if she played the appropriate part as well as any. She made clear of her likes and dislikes (esp concerning her family and anyone trying to use them) and I kinda love that boldness behind the sweet beauty.

  8. This story doesn’t move me the way TBVW did. The leads in both stories had their own flaws but in TBVW, there was some emotion, some feeling between the couple and they did not harm others unless they were harmed. Atleast that’s what I remember of it.
In this story none of the emotion rings deep. I am unable to get the sense of despair or being backed to the corner that make this male lead suspect and kill almost everyone. I get that in this era, you had to strike before others did, else it would be too late. I also don’t get any sense of warmth or love between the couple. Maybe that’s the true story of practicality and existence rather than love and emotions
    Thanks for translating

    1. I love intrigue and dirty dealing, but it seems uneven in this story. Like, “did someone just get murdered? Probably our boy and his machinations. Someone got disappeared? He’s in our fu’s basement. ”

I have to reread virtuous Wife to see if it had the same kind of thing, but I don’t recall it…

      1. Well … … I guess you didn’t catch the implication that He Heng and He Ming murdered the emperor?

      2. Caught that :P. But I don’t recall random people dropping like flies every four chapters. It’s not that there wasn’t scheming, but that I don’t recall a bunch of deaths followed by the thought “I bet it was the ML, in the basement, with the torture implement.”

    2. Funnily enough I thought this story was actually about warmth, especially since people are dropping like flies and we then have thought, “Bet its the ML”. ‘Cos they seem less important and is showed as trivial than the interaction between two leads, though, it might actually because they’re the leads. It’s just, they started without love and both weighed benefits and their own goals far more than love. They both are emotionless people too, so the “warm” side of this story is nurtured really carefully, slowly, watered with much care. Their trust to each other, to some degree, is merely still unlocking their own heart for each other, for their own goals and benefit. It is still a long way before they could share their goals and found things to benefit from for both sides. But for this couple, it is exceptionally fine and dandy. It’s aready good enough for those emotionless couple to be open about their aims to each other and what they need for each other, because they valued those more than emotions, love, or warmth. This, for me, actually is their “love” and “warmth” for each other.

I haven’t read TBAVW though, so cannot compare. Just my two centa

  9. Thank u for the double chapter…. I really love TBVW and has been re read so many times and I feel they were not really involved each other but here… They have a lot of discussions regarding imperial matter…

  10. Thank you for the second chapter 💖💖💖

I really like the scene between Xi Wan and YJQ, it’s a lot more relaxed and open than other scenes so far. I really hope they become closer and closer~

I’m also really curious about the maid….I wonder what’s up with her. And again, YJQ’s sister got what she deserved in the end. One thing is to disregard your family’s opinion to marry the man you love but another to actively try to harm your own siblings….what did she expect would happen?

    1. The question you should be asking is : What was he doing so late that he crashed in the study instead of someplace more comfortable

  11. Honestly currently I find that I dislike the main leads in 8TT more and more with each chapter whereas my opinion of the MCs in TBAVW only rose with the progress of the story. Here they complain about others being stupid and selfish but YJQ and HXW are just as selfish if not more so, only smarter. The only likeable character so far is HXW’s mother. In comparison, He Hang was ambitious but he wasn’t this sinister and QJ was not as heartless as HXW.

As for the comparison of interactions of the MCs in the 2 novels, while in TBAVW there was a lot less said between them, I felt that it was more intimate and the distance between them kept shrinking. In 8TT, there is a wall between them due to all the sinister actions that he secretly undertakes and it keeps growing with every new vicious step he takes. At this point they still feel like 2 strangers living under the same roof.

Ultimately, if he is involved with the assassination of the husband of his sister then my negative opinion of him will become irreversible.

    1. You are right in some point but we shouldn’t forget the fact that HXW has a whole family who love her and she loves. She needs to be careful since she knows her husband’s ambition, and what might happen if he fails.
So she needs to be wary even of her own husband so that her family is out of those conflict.
QQJ is basically an orphan. Her jiu jiu can support her but they have different surname so as long as they stay firm in their position nothing really dangerous couldcould happen.
Getting alienated in court if other prince had won, that was the worst risk, but their head and position would still be safe.
Second, HH and his competitors are all brothers and in that story, even Rui Wang wasn’t to the point of killing his own brothers, so HH needs not to be vicious either.
However if only the emperor didn’t give the throne to him, he was ready to get it by force. In this case, anything could have happened.
In YJQ’s case, his opponent tried to assassinate him and his wife, so it’s only a question of “Who is smarter and luckier ” to determine who stays alive.
I kill you first or I will get killed.
In this life and death fighting, his own sister even decided to stand behind his enemy..so shouldn’t she realise what that means and which consequences she may have to take!?
It means, she doesn’t care either whether her brother lives or dies, so what right does she have, to expect that he cares?
Her husband has just got shocking info from crown prince and I reckon that she somehow has connection with Sheng Junwang. Sheng Junwang is someone without emotion even toward his own woman, so it’s more probable that he was the one having him killed to sow more discord between this siblings and at the same time cutting one more hand of the crown prince.
Afterall, Xuan Wang and Lin Ping Junzhu are siblings…if he’s acting cold at this moment, it’s not good for his reputation…however it’s not likely to have him acting warm.
This is also seen as a good result by Sheng Junwang.
Despite all that… Lin Ping Junzhu has no right to expect her brother to pity and care for her, if she never even care about him and his life.
Her family might try to separate her from her man but the fact that she managed to marry him and even got her brother to carry her to the wedding sedan, it only means that her family still loved her enough and wishes her happiness despite disliking that man for being an opportunist.
Does she think she could marry that man if her family insisted not to allow her?
Impossible, there were even cases in ancient era that the noble family prefer to kill own daughter than losing face.
Sadly, even today there are still people in the world who do such things (honor murder towards own daughter/sibling).

But Xian Wangfu only warned her not to regret her own decision if her life is hard from that moment on.
However she has been going overboard since then for the sake of her man’s career and favor.
Fighting for oWN marriage is onw thing but harming own family who never harm her first is another thing.
She only reaped what she sow.
YJQ and HXW might be sinister but they only treat others in the same way those people treat others too. People who do no harm to this pair are not touched and they know how to repay other kindness and favor.
This is their bottom line or better to say: their definition of being not selfish.
It’s obviously not the character of people whom they complain about.
Because they are indeed ungrateful and have too much jealousy to the point of being indifferent toward the life and death of their own family member… Where all they care about is only if this family member could bring any advantage or not.
Just like Zhang Shi & daughter… They only see HXW as family when they want something from her but mock her and harm her when she declines their wishes.
Isnt that enough to be called selfish too?
They didn’t care whether XiWan got problem with their request… HYL has even felt glad if xi wan being blamed by her husband.
What kind of sister is that, yearning over her own brother in law and tried to harm her cousin out lf jealousy. HXW may be cold but she had even saved her from her mean husband despite knowing her ungrateful personality.
Well…I think, one should simply not do things to others that we don’t want others to do to us.
Take ans Give, is something we should do to maintain a good relationship, be it between family members, friends or even lovers.
Unconditional love is normally only given by a mother to her children.
In general, love always need to be nurtured..namely by both parties.
one sided effort would never work because sooner or later it will be tok exhausting to that one party who constantly invest in the relationship but got no rewards for it.

  12. I thought about what you said and I partially agree. However, there is a big difference between Qu Qing Ju and Hua Xi Wan and their relationship towards their husband. For QQJ, she was resigned with her husband and she knew she had to rely on him from now on, so for her, there was nothing to discuss really. But got HXW, she still has her family, whom she loves, which is why she is wary of him.
Here, they still need to establish trust and understanding for each other, which is why they talk more. Of course it may also have something to do with the fact that maybe the guys are just different and that YJQ is just more open and inclusive, while HH likes to protect his wife from everything or because they have established an understanding of each other already and he knows that she knows kind of thing.
I love both of the couples for the same reasons but I think they are still different, in the little details

  13. Hmm, many said that HH is much more better than YJQ… but if u read HH story again n again, u will actually see that both of them almost identically same except HH dark side not really was told in the novel. HH too is someone who known as scholar prince who don’t have any intention in becoming emperor, but I don’t think that he become emperor at the end is last minute plan or just only bcuz his mother intervention. I’m pretty sure there are many things going on behind the scene, only In TBAVW the dark side of HH maybe will never be unfold… Even after their tomb was found… T.T. huhu. The epilogue is really bittersweet. But still, this is just my personal opinion though.

  14. At least now we get to read to understand a bit why he took those actions like that

    Thank you!

  15. Thank you for the double update! In comparison to TBAVW, I think 8TT still lacks of chemistry. I like how HXW and YQJ interacting but I feel their interaction too plain because I think they still act each other while QQJ and HH, we could see HH slowly develop feelings for QQJ. But I enjoy how the author revealing the dark side of YQJ, in TBAVW the author didn’t develop more HH dark side and more focusing into QQJ.

  16. I have not read the other novel”to be a Virtuous Wife” At this point it is more interesting to me to review the characters of this story unique to this story and not the comparison of the characters of the other novel. After all it is a different story..The comparison is interesting but, it takes away form the core of this novel .Perhaps at another forum we could take on the task of the comparison.

  17. Personally I find this story much more complex and interesting than TBAVW.
I absolutely love our main couple.
Thank you so much for your hard work and excellent translation.

  18. I sound paranoid but something seems ‘wrong’ with him. I think it is a half truth. I don’t trust him.

But Xian Wangfu only warned Lin Ping Junzhu not to regret her own decision if her life is hard from that moment on.
However she has been going overboard since then for the sake of her man’s career and favor.
Fighting for oWN marriage is onw thing but harming own family who never harm her first is another thing.
She only reaped what she sow.
She has no right to expect her bother to care if she herself never even care whether he lives or dies.
She joins the camp of her brother’s enemy, the man who has no scruples to kill her brother.
Be it Crown prince or Sheng Junwang both wanted to kill Xianwang. Her husband helps Crown Prince and She helps YBY, so it’s indeed outrageous to expect Xian Wang to care and pity her.

  20. Re-reading this again for like the 4th time, i just noticed that the ML says the phrase “this world” alot, as if he came from a different one. Any thoughts?

  21. i believe there remains a lot unspoken here as well, he still hides himself well while testing out his wife here and there, and she does the same with throwing these small tantrums from time to time. There are tidbits of cuteness but as for now, I still don’t see the romance or chemistry between those two :/
