Chapter Forty-Nine: The Miscarriage of Hou shi
Before the three had gone far from the Empress Dowager’s palace, the sound of clapping came from ahead. The three instantly stopped moving forward, hurriedly retreated a few steps to the side and stood next to the path with bowed heads.
Qilong Emperor was wearing a black and red outer robe, and a gold coronet on his head. He was surrounded by a group of taijian and female palace attendants as he walked towards this side. There were numerous female palace attendants and taijian kneeling on the ground.
When he passed in front of the Crown Princess and the others, Qilong Emperor tilted his head to look at the trio. His gaze swept across Hua Xi Wan and the others who were making proper bows and said faintly, “There is no need for so much courtesy.”
Hearing this, the three bobbed and then moved backwards. After they went a distance, they finally turned and hurried away.
“Emperor?” The taijian saw the Emperor was standing at his spot and reminded in a low voice. This was right outside the Empress Dowager’s residential palace. It was not appropriate for the Emperor to stare at his daughter-in-law and nieces-in-law.
“En.” Qilong Emperor moved his gaze away. Putting his hands behind his back, he walked without a word towards the Empress Dowager’s palace. The female palace attendants and taijian following him sighed in relief.
The Crown Princess and the others also sighed inside. It was not comfortable to be stared at by the Emperor like that. If some rumor spread in the future, it would be even worse.
The three separated at the palace gates, and all of them left on their own carriages.
When she got onto the carriage, Hua Xi Wan thought about the deliberate pause Qilong Emperor had performed just now. Even though Qilong Emperor had been increasingly arrogant, his mind was still in the range of normal people. Why would he act like that without a cause?
Was it on purpose or a momentary daze?
She didn’t know how long the carriage travelled when Hua Xi Wan heard the servant outside report that they had arrived at the wang fu. She neatened her clothing and then held Bai Xia’s hand to get off the carriage. Just as she prepared to sit onto the sedan to enter the inner compound, a mama hurried out. When the servant saw her, she knelt down. “Wang Fei, Sheng Junwang Fu has just sent a message. Sheng Junwang Fei’s child is gone.”
“What did you say?” Hua Xi Wan’s expression changed slightly. She knew how much importance Hou shi placed on her child. How could she suddenly have a miscarriage?
She thought and then said to Bai Xia, “Go back and change. We will go visit Sheng Junwang Fu.” Her clothing right now was too complex and bright. It would not be appropriate to visit Hou shi like this.
Choosing a set of light-colored palace robes, she changed her jeweled hairpins to jade adornments that appeared steadier. Hua Xi Wan brought all kinds of replenishing medicines and then sat onto the carriage for Sheng Junwang Fu.

Hou shi thought of Yan Bo Yi who had not yet returned to the fu, and the child that she had lost. Seeing the sincere worry on Hua Xi Wan’s face, she felt complex. “Thank you.”
Hua Xi Wan saw her act like this and a slight smile appeared. “This is right. As a woman, you have to be good to yourself. Otherwise, are you not wasting the grace of your parents in raising you?”
Hearing this, the Crown Princess’ expression stilled, and then she smiled bitterly. Xian Wang Fei could say this because she lived in Yi’an Marquis Fu who truly loved their daughter. Just as she was dazed, a person jumped off the carriage. It was Sheng Junwang Yan Bo Yi.
“Xian Wang Fei.” Yan Bo Yi had not expected to encounter Hua Xi Wan in a setting such as this. He said politely with a bow, “This one has matters and cannot attend to you.”
“Tang Bo, walk slowly.” Hua Xi Wan turned her body sideways and returned the greeting. Seeing Yan Bo Yi enter the junwang fu in large strides, she also got onto the carriage.

Wow, poor Hou shi……I feel really bad for her, at least if she had a child she’d have someone to love and care for in that awful junwang fu. Especially with such a horrible, unfeeling husband…..
I also really pity the crown princess. Her situation doesn’t excuse her actions of course, if she is the cause for Hou shi’s miscarriage, but there’s little she can do. It was probably not her idea in the first place – probably the empress’s who can’t stand the other princes having children while the useless crown prince can’t even have one after trying so hard. It’s also really sad she was raised basically to inherit the position of crown princess, sigh. Shows you how lucky Xi Wan is.
I wonder why the emperor would stare at his daughter-in-law and nieces-in-law on purpose tho…

It is not that the night pearls’s color is the cause of the miscarriage but the actual property of the pearls that shines for some chemical’s reaction. What she thought is why would they put night pearls in a vine landscape? The vines and the pearls’ color didn’t even match, unless they did it on purposse, or they in their ignorance have some kind of unique sense of fine arts, but the painting at that time was more organic resembling the supossed to be colors of ehat they see (green leaves, dark branches, red apples)
The statement about colour is pure superstitions, but she only said it’s inappropriate Her belief that the pearl caused miscarriage is however not necessarily wrong, although I wouldn’t say that it’s completely correct since it’s only placebo effect. Luminous pearl could emit radiation if it’s mined in a region that also contain radioactive materials, which is quite probable (although it’s not always the case).
It’s also possible that this pearl was mined in a place that contains mercury.
We all know that Radiation is dangerous and mercury can damage the nerve system of children so it’s of course not a good material to be placed in the room of pregnant women.
It’s of course not always the case but the risk is simply to high, so it’s better to just avoid it.
All they need to do is take good care of themselves and their respective fu. If they’re an impregnable fortress, no one can do anything or say anything. Basic of qu qingju school of thought 101.
Qu Qing Ju and Hua Xi Wan are strong enough mentally, Hou shi doesn’t have their experience so she made mistakes.

Poor Hou Shi. Even though they’re not on the same side, I actually like her. Sad that she miscarried. I think it’s a little ridiculous to blame the night pearls for the miscarriage but I also think it’s rather insensitive to gift something like that when the rumors are rife about it having bad effects on women’s health. It doesn’t matter if it’s true. What matters is intent. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone from the palace sent thr gift using the Crown Princess as pawn. She may have known about it but honestly, could she really say anything against the machinations of the imperial family?

This is our modern girl who says that the night pearls are bad. Is that a thing or just superstition? It should just be a type of fluorite, not radioactive or anything. (Lots of stuff fluoresces.) I’m not a big “baby” person, though, so I can’t think of anything comparable in the US…

I think in this story it sounds like our MC believes the night pearls of ancient china actually glow with low grade radio activity. Probably will be fine to touch or walk around, but long time exposure on an adult or short exposure on rapidly growing cells (like a fetus) would show bad effects. At least, that’s how the MC is treating it (and probably how the author intends it?). Gorgeous and rare.. but not something you want in your bedroom.

I think some people have slight misconceptions about HXW. From her memories, she transmigrated into this world as a child or possibly as a baby with memories of her time in the modern world. it was mentioned at some point that she has been in this world for 16yrs and she is only 16 plus yrs at present. So she was practically raised in this world. She isn’t like other transmigration characters that only crossed worlds when they are already grown up. I’ll attribute her wisdom to having lived for a long time as opposed to the “modern wisdom” commonly seen in other characters. If you add the 16yrs she has spent in this world with the number of years she must have spent in the modern world, that’s quite a number of years for anyone to gain wisdom from life experiences.
in early chapter it say that MC got remember her past life after the accident when she fall into the lake, while also it’s possible that her memories was sealed til the accident happening which might be have her head hitting something to unseal it.
Would take note of that when I reread the chapters. I feel like it’s easy to miss out on details when reading this novels.

Probably some kind of conspiracy, yes. The palace knew before the husband, it seems.
Any man who would finish up work before going home to his wife who just miscarried is also not going to rush on the journey. Yan Bo Yi was in a rush, so I think he wasn’t putting the baby second to anything, but rather he was probably some distance away, and it took longer to inform him and for him to travel.
The night pearl thing is probably a more modern piece of superstition/folk medicine than the setting of the story. I suspect HXW brought that from the past life. After all, she is the only person around with a hangup about the night pearls, at least that we know about.
