八宝妆 Eight Treasures Trousseau Chapter Fifty Four “Pity”

This chapter has been brought to you by me, Adnana, and Vivie.

Glossary

[1]侧妃 cefei: ce means “side,” therefore cefei is literally a wang‘s “side fei,” akin to a secondary wife. Among a wang‘s consorts, cefei is the highest rank below the wangfei (the principal wife). A wang can have two cefei.

Chapter Fifty-Four: Pity

After Hua Xi Wan changed her clothing, she hurried with her servant girls to the guest hall. When she saw Hou shi’s appearance, she couldn’t help but feel shocked. After exchanging greetings with Hou shi, Hua Xi Wan sat down.

In the past, Hou shi had always been full-cheeked and of a healthy appearance, but meeting her now, Hua Xi Wan found that the other was extremely thin and her cheeks were sunken in. Her cheekbones were extremely evident and her lips slightly pale. Only that pair of black eyes was bright, and caused Hua Xi Wan’s heart to shudder.

Saozi, are you all right? How come you are so thin?” Hua Xi Wan sighed. “You are still so young—you have to take care of your body. If your health deteriorates, it is not good.”

Hou shi laughed softly. “I’m not afraid, and I feel that my health has been very good recently. A figure like wang fei is one that the women of Jing admire.” In reality, Hua Xi Wan was not a slender person, but her figure looked beautiful and many young females in Jing copied her.

However, Xian Wang Fu was noble, and Hua shi was from a prestigious family. The things in her dowry were not those that normal people could rival. The hair adornments, the jewelry, grand clothing and gourmet food—many women wanted to copy Hua Xi Wan’s style, but they only copied the insignificant details and were a joke.

Hou shi felt scorn towards the females of some prestigious families. When the rumor had been that Hua Xi Wan was a woman without beauty, those people had one face. Now that Hua Xi Wan was a wang fei and deeply favored by Xian Wang, and had Yi’an Marquis Fu at her back, Hua Xi Wan became the object of admiration. These were really people who blew with the wind. There were also some women who acted as though they were virtuous, criticizing Hua Xi Wan for being wasteful, unable to manage a household and ruining the good reputations of women.

Those people acted as though they felt pity and pain, but they forgot that this was a matter of someone else. It was just a group of women who only had respectful relationships with their husbands and could not bear to see other people living better than they did.

What was the use in being virtuous? So what if one was good at managing a household and being frugal? When a man did not like you, being virtuous was called being old-fashioned, being frugal was called being ungenerous. If they liked you, wearing gold was called being noble, being spoiled was called an act of flirtation. In reality, there were not many things that one should not do—what mattered was only whether one liked the other or not.

In the past, Hou shi could not see this, and did not dare to think about these things. Now that her body was damaged due to her miscarriage and she would never be able to have a child, as her husband took a cefei[1], what she received was only a “you will be the most noble mistress in the wang fu.”

Her husband was in bed with other women, and in the future, his children would not be hers. She was like a rare object placed on a shelf. She looked valuable, but in reality, she was useless. What was the use in being the most noble mistress?

A few decades ago, there had been a wang ye of the Yan Clan whose body was injured and unable to make a woman pregnant. Consequently, he only ever had the wang fei as the only woman until he died. Countless people had admired this wang fei and praised this wang ye for being deeply in love and righteous in his conduct.

Now that she was unable to become pregnant, even as Junwang Ye  took a cefei, many people sympathized with him for being unable to have a legitimate di son. It was as though he was undergoing a great slight.

Then what was she worth? She who had schemed for Junwang Ye, and finally lost the ability to have children because of Junwang Ye’s enemies—what was she worth?

How unfair were the Heavens towards women?! The world was so laughable. Her love for Junwang Ye became the best joke.

Hua Xi Wan saw that Hou shi’s mood was not quite right and pushed a plate of refreshments. “Saozi, taste this lotus leaf cake. The Food Room made this recently; I think it is acceptable.”

Hou shi picked up a small piece and nibbled. She said with a smile, “The fu’s chefs have very good skills: sweet but not nauseating, the lotus fragrance is faint. It is not just acceptable, I think it is delicious.”

“Bai Xia, remember to reward this chef well. It is his good fortune to be praised by Saozi,” Hua Xi Wan said with a smile. “Saozi, it is rare for you to come to this poor home. How about we walk around the yard?”

“That is good.” Hou shi clapped and said with a smile, “I see that the scenery inside the wang fu is elegant and was just thinking of a reason to take a tour. Now that Wang Fei has invited me, it is a great matter.”

The two walked out of the guest hall hand in hand and then walked towards the garden. The further she walked, the more Hou shi felt that the Xian Couple were really people who enjoyed life. There was a new thing to see with every step in the garden, all kinds of flowers blooming, red and purple. No wonder Hua shi was so confident in inviting her to the garden.

In the end, the two sat down in the pavilion at the center of the lake. The pavilion was surrounded on all sides by water. All the lotus flowers had bloomed and fallen, but the lake had been cleaned up well. There was no rotting matter to be seen. Some water flowers floated on the surface and it was extremely poetic to see.

“An immortal’s home would just be so,” Hou shi exclaimed emotionally. “Compared to Wang Fei, my life has been nothing.”

The true matter had come now.

Hua Xi Wan scattered some fish feed in the water. Looking at the goldfish competing for food in the water, she said with a smile, “Saozi, where do these words come from?”

“I just feel slightly emotional.” Hou shi put down the teacup and looked at the goldfish swimming freely in the water. There was a sad and bitter expression on her face. “I am unable to have a child, and unable to live idly like you, so what is the meaning in life?”

Hua Xi Wan showed a shocked expression and did not even notice when the fish food in her hand dropped into the water. “Saozi, you…”

“A few days ago, the grand doctor came and said that it will be very difficult for me to get pregnant in the future.” Hou shi’s expression became even more sorrowful, the rims of her eyes red as she said, “Tell me, what do I have to look forward to in this life?”

Hua Xi Wan had never seen Hou shi look like this. In her mind, Hou shi had always been dignified and magnanimous, and would never show such a weak expression in front of other people. She was very surprised at the other’s actions today.

Also, her relationship with Hou shi could only be considered average. Even if Hou shi had something on her mind, it was strange that Hou shi was telling her.

Saozi, you cannot think like this. Maybe it is just that your body is weak now. When your body recovers, you will have a child.” Even though she did not know Hou shi’s intentions, but she could not feel any joy at seeing Hou shi unable to have a child. Why would a woman make things more difficult for other women? “What you need to do now is rest your body, and not think of anything else.”

“Right now, I really do not want to think of anything else.” After Hou shi said this, she suddenly grabbed Hua Xi Wan’s wrist. “Wang Fei, I will help you step onto the noblest position if you can help me have my revenge!”

Hua Xi Wan’s expression changed. Fortunately, the servants in the surroundings were close to her. Otherwise, it would be worth an execution if Hou shi’s words spread. For a woman in this world, what was the noblest position other than the phoenix throne?

Saozi, you have not been in a good mindset recently. Do not think nonsense.” Hua Xi Wan’s expression was stern as she said, “I did not hear what you said. Please, do not say such things in the future.”

Hou shi saw Hua Xi Wan’s complexion that was pale from fright and felt puzzled. She had once heard Junwang Ye say that Xian Wang was someone with great ambitions but a nonchalant appearance. Looking at Hua Xi Wan’s expression now, she didn’t even seem to dare to think about such a thing. Otherwise, she would not be so frightened.

Was it that Junwang was wrong, or that… Xian Wang was not truly in love with Xian Wang Fei?

Thinking about Hua Xi Wan’s paternal and maternal families, Hou shi instantly understood. She felt some sympathy for Hua Xi Wan. So Xian Wang was also the same?

With Hua shi’s beauty, if she married into an average noble family, she would be someone who would be cared for greatly. Now that she was married to Xian Wang, regardless of whether she was truly loved or not, she was probably going to be used by Xian Wang. When she saw Hua Xi Wan acting as though she didn’t know how to move from fright, she did not want to make things difficult for the other. She rubbed the corner of her eye and said, “Dimei, do not pay any attention. My mind is slightly muddled.”

Hua Xi Wan said hesitantly, “Saozi, I should not be the one saying this, but as women, I really do not bear to see you going on like this.” She sighed and held Hou shi’s hand. “Listen to me—do not waste your mind on other matters. Take care of your body, be better to yourself; this is better than anything else.”

Hou shi knew that Hua Xi Wan’s words were sincere, but since she had walked to where she was now, there was no way for her to turn back. Her husband only had respect for her, but no love. She could not even have a child as a comfort. There was nothing in her life to think about, nothing to hope for.

“The time is late; I should return home.” Hou shi stood and smiled at Hua Xi Wan. She said, “Thank you, but now that it is like this, there is nothing that I can think of. Dimei, you have more luck than I do…” I hope that you will not end up like me—Hou shi could not say the words. She might sympathize with Hua Xi Wan, but Xian Wang Fu and her Sheng Junwang Fu were people on different sides.

When Hou shi sat on the sedan and came out of Xian Wang Fu, she coincided with Yan Jin Qiu coming back to the fu on the carriage. She observed through the curtain, sighed and moved her gaze away.

Yan Jin Qiu felt slightly surprised when he heard that Sheng Junwang Fei had come to the fu. Today, Yan Bo Yi had taken two cefei. Even though it was not a major matter, it really did not seem like Sheng Junwang Fei to not be present in the fu for such an event.

Everyone in Jing knew that Sheng Junwang Fei was intelligent and virtuous. It really was unbelievable that she would act like this today.

Originally, Hua Xi Wan did not know why Hou shi would come out of the blue and then leave. When she learned from Yan Jin Qiu that Sheng Junwang was taking cefei, she finally knew what happened. No wonder Hou shi lost her composure.

It was a fatal blow when Hou shi learned that she was unable to become pregnant after her miscarriage. Yan Bo Yi taking two cefei was cutting off the last of Hou shi’s hopes. A woman without any hope would only walk two paths. One was madness, the other was silence.

Hou shi hated the Crown Prince and his side for causing her infertility, and naturally would not become silent. Therefore, her only choice was going mad.

“Don’t they say that Sheng Junwang is unaffected by beauty? Why is he in such a hurry to take concubines?” Hua Xi Wan asked with a furrowed brow. “How can Tansao endure this?”

Yan Jin Qiu said sarcastically, “He wants to have a son before the Crown Prince. Now that Tangsao is unable to have a child, he is naturally in a hurry to take concubines.” Otherwise, why would he take two cefei at once?

Hua Xi Wan thought of Hou shi’s red-rimmed eyes and thin appearance as well as the black and glittering eyes. She sighed. “It really is a pity.”

It was a pity for this woman who dug out her heart for her man.

Yan Bo Yi’s heart was too large and held too many things. Even if a woman like Hou shi sacrificed everything for him, in his mind, she was just a woman.

Translator ramblings:Yan Bo Yi is a typical product of his society, he just doesn’t know how to make it look good. However, as said in the chapter, this is a terrible act only in our (the reader’s) point of view and other people may feel sorry for him for being childless and blame his wife.

  1. And reality rears it’s ugly head. Poor Hou Shi. I really doubt she can come out of this depression. I first wanted her to be friends with Hua Xi Wan but at the rate she’s going, she would probably not care and bring everyone to hell with her. This is a bad circumstance all around. How depressing.

Thank you for the chapter! Will look forward to it again next week 😀

      1. In a society like this, the only road for Hou shi is downwards. The chances of her doing as HXW asked is very low. And she has already done something that can’t be taken back

      2. She has one other option, but it depends on a massive stroke of ill-luck for someone and/or a massive stroke of good luck for her. The doctors said very difficult, but they did not apparently rule future pregnancy out entirely. Junwang ye really ought to fatten up his sad wife and try to get her pregnant again, if only to hedge his bets. Possibly, to achieve his goal, he ought to take as many women as his fu may support, and do his utmost to get them all pregnant. However, he really ought to have more thought for the face of his main wife if he intends her to be his Empress. It would be inadvisable to raise a cefei to the phoenix throne over the previous wangfei; taking better care of her and hedging his bets would go a long way to gaining the ultimate respect of the people in household matters.
The other side of this option (ill-luck) essentially needs one of the new wives to die in childbirth or shortly after. At that point, Hou shi adopts the child, and has one to raise and care for her throughout his/her life. It’s better still if that child is the first son, and born before the crown prince can manage to get one of his own.

I doubt Hou shi will act crazy at home – her drive for revenge requires further action, and she cannot allow herself to be divorced or hidden away before it is achieved. I believe this was her one truly obvious sign of madness. Now, unless she gets a child, she will burn brightly until she burns out. (Unless she gets caught, and then a whole other mess with more people involved…)

  2. This Sheng junwang is an idiot, he’s soo focused on his ambitions and scheming that he has nothing left for managing his interpersonal relations. No matter how skilled he is, if he even had a bit of energy for putting on an act, how would Xian wang be a match for him? Sure he has a lot of power but that stuff doesn’t last long when you put people off, you might as well make yourself public enemy number one. Although HXW sent Hou-shi off this time, I’m pretty sure Hou-shi is going to make him regret being so callous.

    1. Quite possibly. I fully agree with the idiocy. Interpersonal relations, especially those between spouses, is very important in this setting – not perhaps the way we think of it most of the time these days, but in that day a strong wangye ultimately needs a strong wangfei. Taking both cefei at the same time shows the world he is in want of an heir. It shows his wife, the functionary, that his emotions have never really been engaged, and aren’t even now, with new women. It shows his wife, the person, that she is of much less importance that she perhaps ever thought. It shows us he has a thorough lack of understanding of human emotions.

  3. Sigh…..what a horrible society, especially for women. I feel really bad for Hou shi, she seems like such an intelligent and capable women – to be able to scheme like that against the empress and not let her find a trace back to her, I think, speaks of her skills. (I actually think her husband wasn’t involved in that.) Honestly, if YBY was smarter and wouldn’t allow society’s prejudice against women to blind him, he’d realize how useful Hou shi could be and should treat her better. Now, his cold attitude and his actions are going to backfire on him since in the end I’m sure Hou shi will betray him and help Xi Wan and YJQ – at least I really hope she does.

As for Xi Wan, it really would seem she’s incredibly luckier than both the Crown Princess and Hou shi. Idk how much YJQ really loves her at this point but I’m sure he’s on his way to and will at least never treat Xi Wan coldly, y’know? Even if he doesn’t love her, I’m sure YJQ would allow her to live her life comfortably like she wants.

Thank you for the chapter 💖💖💖 and sorry for the essay lol, I just really love this story!!

    1. I would think that in terms of marriage, YJQ and HXW are both pretty lucky. YJQ has a pristine reputation (the type that the Empress wished her son had) because even when he was questioned about being related to someone’s murder, in everyone’s mind, asking him was merely a formality. It was pretty much set in their hearts, that he wasn’t involved at all (despite the readers knowing that he actually was involved). Therefore from my point of view, the type of wife he needs is someone smart who doesn’t do things unnecessarily least her actions’s consequences ends up biting him in the back. Hence HXW is essentially the type of wife he required : smart enough to no inquire about stuff that doesn’t concern her and lazy enough to not scheme willy-nilly.

      1. Although, he appears to wish she wanted to be involved just a bit more. Her involvement would equal the Yi’an Marquis fu’s involvement, and they are a bright bunch with enough power to get things done quietly or obviously, as they wish, but not enough obvious power to attract undesirable attention. Also, being of the bright bunch, he would occasionally like her input, her take on things, and perhaps alternate ideas for means to their joint end. He has found her trustworthy, and now he would like to employ that trust beyond merely staying out of things.
If/when she does decide to be an action wangfei instead of a mostly ornamental wangfei, this world will shake.

  4. Ahh my heart breaks for the woman of that time. I wish her the best and I hope she gets her revenge .
    THANKS FOR THE CHAPTER

  5. On a sidenote, I wouldn’t be surprised if Hua Xi Wan would be the first to get pregnant and probably have a son on the first try. Then, the couple would have to work double time to ensure nobody does anything to the boy. Hmmmm…….

    1. Unless Sheng Junwang took in two infertile women, there is little chance of that. It’s there, the possibility, but Yan Jin Qiu is Very careful. He already mapped out when he would start having children; I don’t think he was lying. The only reason for that plan to change would be that he’s already on the throne.

  6. Pity… Even in society nowadays, things like this happened~

To be a woman who devoted 120% of her heart to his husband and family is never a good things in my opinion… Call me callous or not being virtuous… But above else you need to think about yourself first….

    1. If virtue make you miserable for your whole life, it could go to dogs. My own mother is devoted to family, but it’s good when the husband and children return this loyalty. If your virtue not returned, you’d better off on your own especially with a husband like Yan Bo Yi.

What’s the point of having a son first if he was murdered in his sleep by the wife he scorned?

      1. YBY thinks he’s MUCH luckier than YJQ. He thinks HXW is crafty and devious whereas his own wangfei is everything a woman should be, kind and virtuous. He doesn’t think she’s capable of murdering a child, let alone HIS child. But as women of these days say :

“Hell hath no wrath like a woman scorned”

  7. Thank you for the new chapter!
The last paragraph is heartbreaking for me 🙁 I pity Hou-shi for having to marry someone like Sheng Junwang. And even if I know his conduct is what the people from that time considered normal, he should have waited until Hou-shi better in mind and body. Besides, even if the chances are low, it doesn’t mean she can’t have children in the future.
In my opinion YJQ also at first thought that HXW as just a woman but he slowly like her genuinely. And besides both of them are not simple people.
Now then it will an all out war between Hou-shi and the Empress and I can’t wait to see the outcome!

  8. Sigh, this was a sad chapter for me…somehow. I feel really sorry to Hou Shi. I mean…aren’t there cases when once the body was healed and since they’re still young (I’m assuming she’s only on her only 20’s or late teens) if body has taken proper nutrition and stuff wouldn’t it be possible for her to get pregnant again.

Thank you soooo much for the update!!😊

  9. Aah… Shen JunWang, I kind of get why you take concubines… it’s just how it works in that era I know. But since your wife just ruined the crown prince beyond repair unless the emperor want to slap himself on the face with pardoning him, and to an extent the empress too… shouldn’t you harbor some fear this crafty wife of yours will turn on you?

You’re basically telling her that she is just your baby factory, virtuous or not. Why are you in hurry for a son when the Crown Prince is in jail, and he is not the most fertile guy out there anyway?
I can’t believe you’re this dumb Yan Bo Yi, soon enough you will hit Crown Prince’s level.
The last person someone like you should make an enemy with is the wife who share your bed. You call Hua Xi Wan vicious woman, but I think you should worry about your wife first.

    1. I think he is also racing against the possibility of children from any other princely family, or a totally unexpected result of the emperor’s many women.

  10. Thanks for the chapter!

What’s great about this story is how even with all their flaws, it still makes us feel sorry for most if not all of the female characters in it.

If I were in Hou Shi’s shoes and also didn’t have a modernised mindset, I wouldn’t know what to do either.

I don’t think the depression is just because her love/feelings for Sheng Junwang was unreciprocated or dismissed, but also because of the implications that being a barren wangfei would have on her reputation. It’s really not easy to not care about how others see you when those views in fact have the potential to affect your life–especially in a historical era such as this.

It kind of made me think of how Qu Qing Ju from TBAVW was like from before the whole transmigration thing. If those two cefei end up getting cocky from being favoured, I dread what it would mean for Hou Shi in her current dispirited state.

  11. Women have it more difficult. They can either go mad or choose to silence. ( ._.)
I feel bad for her. At least she still knows not to involve HXW (._. )

Thank you for the chapters ✧(๑✪д✪)۶ㅂ٩(✪д✪๑)✧fu

  12. Really, i don’t like YBY. He’s so heartless to his wife. Even HS took a step and sacrifice herself , he doesn’t care at all with her condition. Like HXW said, it’s pity HS has YBY as her husband. That’s why HS turn back her side become YBY enemy. No wonder

I think HS think that YJQ just act like he’s really love HXW is really wrong. Maybe YJQ before just act like dignified husband and wife but actually the more he learn about HXW the more he’s fall in love with her. HXW with rational personality, she knows what YJQ want. As long as she can life with comfortably in this era, she doesn’t care what will happen in the future. So she just cooperate well with him, gives him support, an love but mot so deep. So eventually YJQ feel HXW never really believe what he feels towards her.

  13. Thank you for the chapters. Poor Hou shi. Sad that it took these events for her to finally see how cruel society really is. Hope this makes her become more scheming than mad.

    1. A moment of the Xian Wang point of view was already shown, and he was wondering why it would be so obvious a set-up, such sloppy workmanship, if it came from Sheng Junwang fu.

  14. Thanks for this chapter. I’m hoping Hou Shi finds a third path – creating her own power base. I actually think the best revenge for her would be to be live well and create her own behind-the-curtain backing – and then refuse to help those who looked down on her for her own childlessness.

  15. I don’t know… I feel like at this stage, if the same thing happened to Xian Wang, he’d think the same thing as his brother, but insidiously act differently in order to look good. We’ve already seen his acting skills and ability to act invisible. For me, this chapter was really really good, as it totally highlights the pain women go through in the past. The tone, those emotions I felt when reading it and sympathizing with Hou Shi…. there are no paths to go but forward after all.

  16. One other thing HXW has that most of the so called noble women don’t have is the backing and love of their Shi family. If YJQ slights her just a little bit, her family won’t hesitate to go pick her up and bring her back home.

    Thanks for the translation😊😊😊

  17. if YBY does have a child out of those two cefei…history would most likely be repeating, the Empress would still be plotting behind the scheme…just sighs

  18. My daydream on how I wish this story would continue:
Yan Jin Qiu goes all out with his ambitions to become emperor. One day, Hua Xi Wan gets caught up in it, and his enemies kidnap her to threaten YJQ for something. HXW, thinking that Yan Jin Qiu can’t let go of becoming king, somehow escapes and doesn’t become a burden for him/make him hand over whatever handicap to his enemies. She doesn’t return to his side – one, because it’s too dangerous and it’s just better for the both of them if nobody can threaten him with her. But for YJQ, it is horrible to keep going on the way he is without Xi Wan, whom he totally fell in love with… And he completely pauses all his ambitions to search for her throughout the lands. At the same time, HXW gets saved by a humble but handsome young doctor in the distant mountainous countryside, far from the capital. She doesn’t ever cheat on YJQ of course, but at the same time she is also ready to consider giving up YJQ for a lifetime of peaceful happiness with someone calm. When YJQ finally finds her and meets the humble and handsome young doctor, who, on the surface has nothing compared to him, but when he thinks about it, the doctor is a serious threat!
At some point in this daydream, I also considered HXW getting injured and getting amnesia…
LOL anyways, that’s all for now for my 胡思乱想…

  19. There’s so many viewpoints that are applicable here… It’s depressing for sure, but given the society at the time… Is it bad that I’m kind of missing the fluffy moments Hua Xi Wan usually has to make these chapters a bit lighter?

Especially since it looks like Hua Xi Wan’s running out of the space to act like nothing outside matters to her…

  20. How is the ML any different from this guy? He is somewhat of an anomaly in that he is loyal to his partner but we really do not know how ruthless he is, and the female lead is convinced he is the most ruthless because unlike her, he is an eye for an eye. I think that he has just had better luck and skill in scheming and doesn’t become too arrogant i.e. he doesn’t try to take big risks.

    1. On this specific matter, at least ML has wisely chosen not to get MC pregnant while the battle for the throne is still in progress.

  21. I don’t understand where this belief came from that woman who has a miscarriage can’t get pregnant again. Most women miscarriage on average 2-3 times. And it is actually easier to get pregnant after someone has miscarried. I hate the mindset that women can’t get pregnant after one child in ancient times. IT was completely baseless…

    1. In this case, it was likely because Hou shi didn’t naturally miscarry. It was artificially induced and thus might have also contained infertility side effects.

  22. now, the words from the empress dowager wouldn’t leave my mind, she predicted something like infertility would happen and that makes me wonder if it was really all just a coincidence that she said so OR she was piling onto her mental stress to help the miscarriage. Even if the empress dowager isn’t on the same team as emperor & co. doesn’t mean she’d take anybody’s side to pummel them down?? I guess? A useless enemy is better than a capable one??

    1. The factor that Hou shi believes that Xiang Wang was using his wife is also reasonable enough for me to believe he still doesn’t love her enough to protect her. He used her, who rejected his night pearl, to bring it up with the crown prince &crown princess, who ended up using it on Hou shi and raised the platform of the two enemies sheng wang & crown prince on a more visible level. Poor Hou shi, everybody took a stab at this lady caught in a cross fire for their political gains.

  23. I really admire the author for highlighting the hypocrisy of how women are treated, and how the same words can be a compliment or a criticism. It makes for a more complex story, where you can have some sympathy for even the villains, because they aren’t cardboard cutouts of bad people, they have emotions and reasons driving them. Admittedly I have zero sympathy for the Empress, who doesn’t seem to feel that her part in the miscarriage is possibly what caused the probable set up of her son…

I do think that YBY is showing himself as less clever than he is supposed to be. Why try for more children right now when they will likely meet the same fate as the last one? He couldn’t protect his wife, why does he think this would be different?

I have the feeling HS will be meeting her end soon.

  24. sigh This is why I sometimes avoid reading novels about women in the old Chinese dynasties. It just makes me feel both angry and sad. They face so many obstacles just to live freely.
