“All right.” Hua Xi Wan did not know what Yan Jin Qiu did to have the Empress Dowager retreat, but she did not want to waste mental effort thinking about this. She changed into a simple dress, washed and then put her hair into a simple style before walking out of the door shoulder to shoulder with Yan Jin Qiu.
Some of the trees and flowers in the yard had started to bud, and it was livelier than it was in the winter. Hua Xi Wan breathed in a breathful of fresh air. As expected, when he heard Hua Xi Wan’s words, the smile on Yan Jin Qiu’s face became gentler. His hand held Hua Xi Wan’s hand with more strength.

After everything was done, Hua Xi Wan slowly said, “The steward from the tea room is capable. This time, he might have slipped up and someone managed to make it through. The punishment of taking his position away is quite severe—how about making him a vice steward?” She touched the tassel in her hair of a bird holding a pearl in its beak. She said with a faint smile, “The laundry room coincidentally lacks a vice steward at the moment. Let him go fill that position.”

As he saw it, these servant girls who had other thoughts were just seeking their own deaths. They should think about what kind of person Wang Fei was, and what they were. In terms of personality, beauty, and status—in which area could they compete? Also, his master just liked a woman like Wang Fei, could others compare?

Translator Ramblings: Mu Tong is the ultimate third wheel.
Having a perceptive steward is the greatest third wheel. Since they can see the good and bad of their master. Though I must say YJQ thinking is kinda simple when is comes to HXW, I mean it in a good way.
That’s precisely the problem, though. HXW is his greatest weakness, and we know that others – the Dowager for one – are not above taking advantage.
Of course, HE’s also aware of it, and HXW isn’t a toothless tiger.
HXW would be his greatness weakness if she was actually as she appeared as opposed to a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
This woman has all the talent of her father . Everyone forgets she was raised in a family that lived by the sword. So intrigue and espionage are not foreign to her.She won’t attack unless it is necessary. She knows how to “use someone else’s sword to strike a deadly blow.”And she readily accepts love and loyalty You are so right she will always return the favor to those who deserve it
HXW definitely learned well from both parents; she can think and she can battle, and she knows how to not have to do any of them too much. YJQ’s certainly gaga for her, but not quite so loopy as to have lost his drive, and certainly not enough to get sloppy. His imperial grandmother seriously underestimates both of them. HXW’s desire to take it easy is for real, but her ability to act is no less real. YJQ’s obvious love for her has grown real (and really grown), and his scholarly appearance is not all show; nonetheless, his schemes grow ever more incisive, and less traceable. He pretends at being a paper tiger very well, indeed.

The emperor is not going to give the order to kill his Imperial Mother, as it would signal the public end of his morals and decency, and could easily lead to a popular revolt. That was not the sort of thing a mainly Confucian society would put up with, and an emperor is only one man in the face of an entire “angry” nation. Any ruler lives and rules at the will of the people (or sometimes, their lack of will to get rid of said ruler).

Empress Dowager: Choosing to raise the sheep instead of the wolf because she thinks it will be docile and obedient to her. Little does she know the sheep is a god-tier beast (see Lord Meh Meh, from Genius Doctor Black Belly Miss) that will crush her when she is most confident of her scheming. Well, she’s getting old anyway, won’t be around too long even if YJQ does nothing.
green tea/robed b*tch/servant: Little to no brains. Servant girls are constantly thinking about how to spurn the mistress and climb into the master’s bed. They don’t observe how their master loves the wife and realize they have no chance if they offend the mistress. A smart servant that wishes to live a better life would understand that all they need to do is to hug the favored mistress’ leg. This is much easier to accomplish, has lower risk, and offends no one (see Jiang Yong Yu, from To be a Virtuous Wife).
Mu Tong: His first advantage is that he is a male servant. His second advantage is that he has eyes to see who is important. His third advantage is that he has brains to understand how this household works. His fourth advantage is the plot armor afforded to him by the author, as he is the most reliable/smart narrator of the couple’s dynamic from a third person point of view.
With so many characters making stupid decisions, Mu Tong did come out on top as the smartest of them all LOL. I applauded his perceptiveness.
BTW, I start to suspect the Empress Dowager might be the one responsible for the Crown Prince getting poisoned…
That seems highly possible.
