Chapter Ninety-One: Hang Oneself

When Hua Xi Wan heard what Yan Jin Qiu said, she did not feel surprised. She felt as though she had been waiting for this day. From childhood, she and Hua Yi Liu had different likes and personalities. If it wasn’t for the fact that their fathers were full-blood brothers, she would not like to interact much with people like Hua Yi Liu.

She didn’t feel any disappointment or fury that Hua Yi Liu had such hatred. In the end, it might even be because she had never treated Hua Yi Liu sincerely.

Hua Yi Liu was jealous of her and Second Sister, and she had never treated Hua Yi Liu with sincerity before, so it could not be blamed on anyone that the three of them had turned out like this now.

It could not be said who had been wrong in this situation. No one owed anyone. It was just that the roads they chose were different, they went in different directions, and so they would have different lives.

“Send her to the monastery for two years to clean her mind.” Hua Xi Wan knew that Yan Jin Qiu giving her this matter to take care of meant leaving Hua Yi Liu alive. If he was the one to take care of this, would she keep her life?

Wang Fei,” Bai Xia said worriedly. “Eldest Miss has thoughts like this. If…”

“What if?” Hua Xi Wan raised an eyebrow and said, “Will I really do something like kill my sister to fight for a man?”

Bai Xia stilled and was bewildered.

“A man who has you in his heart will not need you constantly scheming.” Hua Xi Wan looked at herself in the mirror. “Emotion as a result of scheming is just an illusion. It can fool others but not your own heart. A man who is truly worthy of the rest of your life should not allow his woman to fight against other women, but should control himself.”

“This servant did not think it through. Wang Fei, do not think about this.” Bai Xia had served Hua Xi Wan for many years and knew her personality. Since Hua Xi Wan had said this, then she would not be moved. Bai Xia turned to say, “This servant knows what you mean. Wang Ye definitely isn’t someone who would look around. What this servant’s worried about is, after Eldest Miss goes to the monastery, what to do if she does something detrimental to you?”

“She will not have a chance.” Picking a silver hairpin out of the box and inserting it in her hair, Hua Xi Wan said serenely, “If she enters the monastery, before she thinks it through, she will not be able to see any outside guests.”

She won’t take Hua Yi Liu’s life but that did not mean she was so saintly as to let Hua Yi Liu do as she wished. A monastery that did not take guests and was guarded by the people from the wang fu was most suitable to Hua Yi Liu.

Three days later, the di daughter of Assistant Minister Hua went to a monastery to cultivate herself. Aside from the two servant girls who entered the monastery with her, there was no one else accompanying her.

Hua Qing Mao was astride on his horse as he watched the doors to the monastery close in front of him. His mood was low and complicated. He turned back to look at the carriage with the insignia of Yi’an Marquis Fu and went in front of the carriage with pressed lips. “Big Brother, Jiejie has entered the monastery.”

He didn’t know what his elder sister had done that had displeased both Father and Mother. Even Eldest Uncle and Third Uncle who never meddled in the affairs of his family had agreed to this. He was young, but he was not ignorant. Eldest Sister had definitely done something wrong that would affect the entire Hua Family, to cause them to make this decision.

“This year’s Spring Examination has been delayed a year due to the matters of the palace. You are young now; stay at home and study. I hope that by next year, our Hua Family will have another graduate.” Hua Chang Bao raised the curtain. He was the heir of the marquis fu and the eldest son of the main branch. Consequently, he was interested in the future of Hua Qing Mao. “Eldest Miss will not be slighted in the monastery. Do not worry.”

No great prestigious family was supported by one person or one female. Therefore, it was good for the Hua Family to have a good junior. Hua Qing Mao was a good scholar. It would not be profitable if he was affected in next year’s exams due to his mother Zhang shi and Hua Yi Liu.

“Big Brother, thank you for the reminder; this brother will remember.” When Hua Qing Mao heard this, his mind eased. Since Eldest Cousin had said this, then his elder sister definitely wouldn’t be slighted in the monastery.

“En.” Hua Chang Bao saw that he was a person with a clear mind and added, “Our action is for her benefit. She has offended a noble personage. It is possible that she might lose her life. It is a good outcome for her to have some peaceful days in the monastery.”

Hua Qing Mao was shocked. When he looked at Hua Chang Bao, the other’s mouth was close. His thoughts turned and he knew that he couldn’t keep asking. After noting it down, he decided to bury this matter in his mind to prevent bringing calamity to the Hua Family.

Seeing him act like this, Hua Chang Bao was even more satisfied. No wonder his younger sister had written to him to have him nurture his younger cousin more. It seemed that his sister was right.

When he thought of Hua Xi Wan, Hua Chang Bao sighed inwardly. No matter how well Xian Wang treated his younger sister, he didn’t feel reassured. The Imperial House was turbulent, and given his younger sister’s position, it was a dream to hope that she would not be pulled in.

##

Wang Ye, the Hua Family has sent the eldest miss to the Clear Water Monastery in the Jing suburbs. Should our people still act?” Mu Tong handed over the secret report. He carefully looked at Yan Jin Qiu who was reading at his desk. “Wang Fei doesn’t seem to be close to this eldest miss.”

“The Hua Family is very smart. Our people have no need to act.” Yan Jin Qiu glanced over at Mu Tong. “Before the master speaks, a servant should not think too much.”

“This one has overstepped. Wang Ye, forgive me.” Mu Tong broke into a cold sweat and knelt in front of Yan Jin Qiu. Because the plans he had made had gone smoothly recently, he had forgotten himself. Now that Wang Ye reminded him, he found to his shock that he had overstepped his position. “This one will be careful in speech and conduct in the future, and not repeat the mistake of today.”

“Rise.” Yan Jin Qiu’s tone was calm as he said, “Wang Fei thinks highly of your ability. Ben wang will give you one more chance. If you make the same mistake in the future, I will not keep you by my side.”

“This one will remember.” After Mu Tong retreated out of the study, he found that there was a fine sweat on his back. Thinking about what Wang Ye had just said, he instinctively looked in the direction of the main yard. He rejoiced that he had taken care when he had been running errands for Wang Fei and had received her favor. Otherwise, today’s matter would not have been so easily smoothed over.

“Three Pure Ones protect.” Mu Tong couldn’t help but bow towards the sky and then slapped himself to make sure he wouldn’t forget.

##

During her noon nap, Hua Xi Wan felt that she was having a very strange dream. Between her dream and awake state, she saw a blue phoenix suddenly fall off a mulberry tree whose trunk was so high that she could not see the earth. She looked around. A strong wind suddenly rose and then she was slammed by this wind onto the tree branch.

The moment she reached out, she found to her shock that her hands had become a pair of golden glittering wings. She looked speechlessly at the misty surroundings. She had become a bird person?

Wang Fei, wake up.”

Wang Fei, the Crown Princess hung herself in Zhu Que Palace!”

Hua Xi Wan immediately woke from her dream. When she opened her eyes, she found Bai Xia and Hong Ying at her beside. Her mind wasn’t able to react. “What?”

“Just now, Chief Steward Mu said that the Crown Princess hung herself and is dead.”

Hung herself and died?

Hua Xi Wan sat up dazedly. She rubbed her temple. “I need to get up. Get someone to help me change.”

After changing into a plain blue palace robe, Hua Xi Wan sat dazed in front of the mirror. Did Lin shi really hang herself, or was it a lie?

She suddenly thought of what Lin shi had said to her that day at the Empress Dowager’s mourning rites. At that time, she had felt that something wasn’t right because those words seemed to be like a last will.

Had Lin shi really committed suicide? She had waited until today for Lin Zheng De to marry Second Sister?

“What about the imperial grandson?” Hua Xi Wan thought of the child who wasn’t even half a year old. The saying was that a mother would be strong for the child. There definitely was a reason why Lin shi would choose to hang herself.

As she was deep in her thoughts, she suddenly heard Hong Ying say that her hair was made up. Hua Xi Wan raised her head to see herself with plain silver hairpins in her hair. She rose and said, “Is Wang Ye in the fu?”

Wang Ye has not left the fu today,” Bai Xia said in a small voice. “Chief Steward Mu said as he left that Wang Fei can go anytime you wish to see Wang Ye.”

Hua Xi Wan did not usually go to the study. When she reached the gates to the study’s yard, she noticed that while the manservants around looked normal, they were extremely guarded. The moment when she stepped through the door, these people bowed in unison to her without any pause.

Because of how neat they were, Hua Xi Wan was shocked. People varied in the speed of their reactions, and these people had been doing different things. Unless they knew that she had come before she stepped in here, they would not have been so flawless.

Walking forward, when she came to the door to the study, she glanced at Mu Tong who was holding open the curtain for her and nodded slightly before she entered.

“You have come?” Seeing her come in, Yan Jin Qiu smiled and stood up. He pulled her to sit with him. Noticing her unusually plain appearance, his smile grew smaller. “You feel for the Crown Princess?”

Hua Xi Wan lowered her face to disguise the pity in her eyes. “I only feel pity for her. She is only a few years older than I am…”

“You are not the same as her; don’t make such a careless comparison.” Yan Jin Qiu pinched her earlobe to stop her from comparing herself to the unauspicious person who had died so early. “Lin shi hung herself out of helplessness. If she did not die, even her child would not survive.”

“The Empress Dowager’s death is related to her?” Hua Xi Wan quickly thought it through. “There are so many rumors around about the imperial grandson. People have even made her and Yan Bo Yi a couple. If she kept living, she would have to worry that the Lin Family would be affected if it was discovered she had poisoned the Empress Dowager, and even the imperial grandson would not be able to lift his head up. So she used death to prove her innocence. While she cannot wash away all suspicion, at least she left behind a virtuous reputation?”

Yan Jin Qiu hugged her. “Since you understand, do not let this matter affect your mood. I heard that if a woman is usually unhappy, she will not be beautiful.”

Hua Xi Wan slanted a look at him. “So you only like this face of mine?”

Yan Jin Qiu: …

  1. Four chapters today?! I feel so blessed! Thank you so much! ♥️♥️♥️

  2. Damn. She really did it. Even if the truth were to come out, she wouldn’t be blame for tempting the emperor. And everything will fall on the emperor’s head. For someone who really worried what the future generation think of him, this will be enough pressure to hung himself.
Looks like someone going to get blame for this. My guess is the other Yan.

    1. Except in that time period, it’s always the woman who is slutty/temptress/unvirtuous and in a case like this, its pretty much accepted that an Emperor will have a wandering eye.

      1. The story would probably be emperor forced the crown princess, unable to withstand the shame and with the heaven being angry sending lightning n all, she take her own life. Sounds like a story loved by the housewives.

      2. Indeed. Women will always have to take the blame. Despite being vicious in general, to have a husband like Xian wang in this era is a fortune. He is a rarity. The Hua men are also the same.

    2. You shouldn’t forget in which era they live. Women will always be implicated no matter if she is raped. There was only out of wedlock sex, not a rape.
Just like in the middle east where a raped woman has to bring out 4 male witnesses to support her accusation, which is basically impossible, the woman would still have to bear the unchaste reputation, impure woman and needs to be stoned to death…
The chinese woman would have to be drowned in the river for such a “sin”, so what is the point.
There is no way she can flee afterall, moreover she still has to care about her son’s future and other family member for her framing the empress to kill ED as a revenge.
This way she can atleast still die without verdict, so she still has the benefit of the doubt.
In the eurepe we can recall the film “Adultery” to know what happened to women in such circumstance.
They will be burnt if I recall it correctly.

  3. *“A man who has you in his heart will not need you constantly scheming.” Hua Xi Wan looked at herself in the mirror. “Emotion as a result of scheming is just an illusion. It can fool others but not your own heart. A man who is truly worthy of the rest of your life should not allow his woman to fight against other women, but should control himself.”*

    Well well well

*She won’t take Hua Yi Liu’s life but that did not mean she was so saintly as to let Hua Yi Liu do as she wished. A monastery that did not take guests and was guarded by the people from the wang fu was most suitable to Hua Yi Liu.*

This is such a huge slap in the face. I hate to say it but she deserves it.

*“En.” Hua Chang Bao saw that he was a person with a clear mind and added, “Our action is for her benefit. She has offended a noble personage. It is possible that she might lose her life. It is a good outcome for her to have some peaceful days in the monastery.”*

For all the shit that’s happened, these Hua women sure do have a good set of men in their family.

*“Three Pure Ones protect.” Mu Tong couldn’t help but bow towards the sky and then slapped himself to make sure he wouldn’t forget.*

I’m laughing. I can’t help it. He’s adorable. I swear, I would read this guy’s journal if he had one.

Aaaaand, bam! Another death. Might not be the last. I’m dreading this story is so close to ending but I’m glad there’s obvious development. Thanks for the chapter!

    1. “Three Pure Ones protect.”
u seem to know what it means. could u explain it for me?

      1. I think he’s thanking the deities he believes in for protecting him.

  4. Xi Wan! Thats it! A man who worth your entire life is someone who control himself!! Geez I understand now why I love youuu!!

  5. Wah…foreshadowing proved correct.
Sigh…what a waste. And yet, by this way she saved her child as well as escaped from the Imperial Family.

    Thank you for the chapter!
Wah, we readers are blessed today!
Multiple chapters on a single day!
Thanking Translator-sama and all the Donors!

  6. I feel for you, YJQ… the woman heart is really hard to guess… he really need to speak and act carefully if he doesn’t want to make his wangfei upset (and then make himself sleep in studio because of a certain someone…cough)…

  7. Love you wyhcwe!
Is there going to be one more to make up for last Tuesday?

  8. Poor YJQ he meant to make his wifey smile and ended up unknowingly offending her. Thanks for this chapter.

  9. The dream was about crown princess killing herself and HXW (with golden wings instead of blue) becoming the new one as a result of inevebility by the “strong wind” YJQ scheming. (Which also makes him “crown prince”)

    1. Or they become emperor and empress as last emperor dies or becomes Xiandi.

  10. Anytime you feel YJQ is a lovestrucked dedicated mushy husband, here comes another chapter reminding you how cold blooded and vicious he can be lol

  11. “Emotion as a result of scheming is just an illusion. It can fool others but not your own heart. A man who is truly worthy of the rest of your life should not allow his woman to fight against other women, but should control himself.” -> I haven’t read many words I’d consider more true than these from a novel.

Kind of nice of HWX to leave some words for HLY’s brother although you could argue it was to make sure that that branch of the Hua family wouldn’t feel too annoyed. Possibly anyway.

… Oh Crown Princess… Although I don’t think even you are free of all blame, I do think your life was probably the most pitiful of them all… *shakes head* Truly a shame.

….. THAT ENDING THOUGH. HAHAHAHHAHA HWX WINS!

  12. Now if only the emperor will die 🌚

Anyways, I’m super curious with HXW’s dream could it be the prophecy sort of dream? She turned into a bird…so could it be a Phoenix? (Phoenix=Empress?) well it also occurred to me that maybe she’s preganant but she is still young, I remember YJQ wants her to get preganant when she’s a bit older (18 yrs of age) or something. Gaaaah. So curious!!

Thaaaaaaank you so much for the chapter!!❣️✨

    1. Not just a phoenix but one with gold feathers, so yes Empress. 🙂

Not really much of a foreshadow though since we have pretty much known that was going to be the conclusion since we learned about YJQ.

    2. but shouldn´t she turn 18 soon?!
i mean if i remember correctly they´re already married for over a year.
but unfortunatly they never said when her b-day is -.-

  13. >Had Lin shi really committed suicide? She had waited until today for Lin Zheng De to marry Second Sister?

I have such mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it’s hard to see where the enmity starts and ends…If the Crown Princess’s affair with the Emperor was more his fault or hers, because of all the intrigue and deception.

But even disregarding that… This was both pragmatic and sweet? On the one hand, she’s committing suicide to shield the Lin family. Ensuring the Hua family is behind them first is a logical move. But a delayed marriage would’ve hurt HXW’s sister too, so her taking care with her suicide seems a morbid but caring thought.

    1. The Crown Princess didn’t have an affair with the Emperor, he got her drunk and raped her. She had to act as though becoming pregnant from this act was cool with her, and even a great thing. She had to act as though he didn’t make her skin crawl and her gorge rise.
Delaying the suicide just long enough for her brother to marry Hua Xi Wan’s cousin was tactical, yes. Her son (no matter how or who fathered him, he would be her son) will need family backing that is free of any criminal taint to merely survive. Fortunately, she wanted her son to live outside of the royal family. Now, she may get her wish, as he may be adopted into her paternal family somewhere. So long as the Emperor doesn’t try to make a fuss about it.
That said, I don’t feel sweetness, just bitter helplessness on the part of the Crown Princess. She would eventually get the blame for someone’s death, if not the Empress Dowager’s (that all too conveniently rid the emperor of his no longer helpful wife – he may have whined about it being a pain to be tarred by the same brush as the Empress, but he made a way out for himself very quickly).

  14. Thanks for the updates! Just want to ask in which part did the eldest miss offended hua xi wan? I think she only like snubbed her in the prev chapter. Thanks!

    1. She offended Yan Jin Qiu, by sort of coming on to him, and obviously snubbing and then complaining about his wife. If the high-powered man does not want your attention, said attention might become a criminal act. Sad, in a way, since it only works in one direction, but there you have it.

  15. “Had Lin shi really committed suicide? She had waited until today for Lin Zheng De to marry Second Sister?”
Damn, if I understood it right, was HXW’s sister supposed to be married the same day? Hoping i misunderstood because marrying when the Crown Princess has died might be a bit too complicated…

    At any rate,
“So you only like this face of mine?”
yep you’re right, the deaths keep on coming; rip Yan Jin Qiu

    (Thaaaaank you for the chapters!)

    1. She either killed herself the night of or the day after. She wouldn’t be discovered until the day after, at any rate, so their wedding would not be called into question, or deemed inauspicious.

  16. Hua Xi Wan slanted a look at him. “So you only like this face of mine?”
    Yan Jin Qiu: …
How did the topic change into this?

Haha, for women, everything is connected.
…that dream, is it signifying her becoming an empress or she’s pregnant with a princess?
    😛

Thank you for the rain of chapters ~~旦_(・o・;) fu

  17. Damn… O_O Didn’t expect the Crown Princess would hang herself with that kind of timing.
    Thanks for mass release!

  18. Should it be Hua Yi Liu (Eldest Miss) in these lines? AFAIK, at this part the second miss, Hua Chu Yu, already left the gate in her sedan.

“Bai Xia and Hong Yin who were standing behind Hua Xi Wan noticed Hua Chu Yu’s gaze and frowned. What did Eldest Miss mean?

“Miss…” Hua Chu Yu’s servant girl carefully examined her dark expression. “Wang Fei just now…””

  19. Aww… i feel sad now.. with only the Emperor left, the story is almost at its ending T^T
We’re already at chap 91, so only a few more chapters to go… 😧😧 my tuesdays/wednesdays will be bleak once more

…..unless.. the translators already have another story in mind?😶

  20. I feel pity for the women in this era, it seems its almost always them who face misfortune in this novel but it is partially because they scheme against others that they face such a fate. Hua Xi Wan is right that as women there is no gain to scheme against each other women when they’re already at a disadvantage in this era, and they only hurt themselves in the long run.

  21. I feel pity for the women in this era, it seems its almost always them who face misfortune in this novel but it is partially because they scheme against others that they face such a fate. Hua Xi Wan is right that as women there is no gain to scheme against each others when they’re already at a disadvantage in this era, and they only hurt themselves in the long run.

  22. After a week of doing a “page refresh”, checking if there is an update, it paid of. 4 chapters!! Thank u.. huh! That was a tough week without YJQ X HXW😥😆😆

  23. Okay…I did not expect that. Poor girl. She waited till the wedding before she carried out her plan. It’s true.. If there was any evidence that CP was the one who harmed the ED, is game over for her family. That poor kid though.. I bet the Emperor isn’t giving a damn what happens to it about now. SMH.

Haha Xi Wan, that’s some foreshadowing there.. the bird falling off the tree, her turning into a bird. Pretty obvious, love.

So viewers stay tuned because coming right up are the deaths of some very interesting and powerful players… First up, our one, and (hopefully) only shameless Emperor; cause of death: extreme stress as a result of declining reputation. Followed by (I expect) wooden boy, Sheng Junwang; cause of death: coveting throne that belongs to our Xian power couple. Anyone else?

Also, thanks for all of the chapters! *Big kiss*

  24. Hahaha the last part of this chapter is just way too funny she’s totally turn it right around on him wonder how he’s going to answer her thank you so much for sharing the chapters I cannot wait for more💖💖💖💖💖💖

  25. Just who the one told me that this story is more pure and innocent that TBVW? This one has much more death than TBVW!

  26. 🧐 for some reason the scene where Xi enters hubbies study….. I pictured Titanic scene after Rose died….. it was really grand 😅

This. This is why I like YJQ more than He Heng. HH was never able to make me feel secure that he will not cheat on QQJ even though I know in the end he did not. Its prolly the scene where he entertains one of his concubines and then his internal dialogue always has a condition of “I love only her right now”. Conpared to YJQ where he stated from the beginning that he will ONLY have HXW no matter what she looks like or her personality is. 🤔🤔

  28. [“Hua Xi Wan slanted a look at him. “So you only like this face of mine?”

    Yan Jin Qiu: …

How did the topic change into this?”]

    Lmao 😂😂😂😂

  29. I still pity the crown princess. She is still considerate enough to wait until HCY and her brother got married before doing suicide.
Women have it hard in this era, and especially in imperial family.

HXW is lucky to be born in Hua family, especially the main branch. But Im sure even if she was reborn as HYL, she would have definitely made another fate. She is lazy but not stupid and weak. She only wants to enjoy life now after having to work like Ox in the past life.
From the fact we see how caring Hua Chang Mai and his father are, I just can’t understand how come HYL didn’t try to plea to cancel her engangement and told them about her mother plan. It’s obvious how her brother loves her, how can’t she see that? Is she a super idiot or what?!
He is even a younger brother, not older… So it should have been possible to talk heart to heart with him.
She had begged for help to HXW when being treated bad in her husband’s household…
So why didn’t she ask for help when it wasn’t late yet.
HYL really can’t always put the blame on other for her bad fate. She might be not very beautiful and talented but it wouldn’t be impossible for her to find a good match with the reputation of Hua family. She has actually a bigger odd to have a happy and safe future in a normal family compare to HXW who is being trapped in an Imperial family.
HXW might have met the similar fate like Sheng junwangfei , tge empresa or Crown princess. Even after being empress one still can have a downfall Who knows the future? What if HXW couldn’t be pregnant when Xianwang as an Emperor needs a heir?
Can’t she see what happen in the Imperial family now?
Even HXW’s family is still worrying her.
But stupid person plus jealous is sometimes really beyond help.
