Chapter Ninety-Five: Impossible to Grasp

Fortune and time were the most ruthless of blades. In the past before the three cousins had married, there had been jealousy, but it had not reached such a level. She and Hua Yi Liu should have been sisters who supported each other, but now they had become two awkward people with barriers between them.

Hua Xi Wan’s eyes were closed as she rested against the wall of the carriage. The carriage suddenly stopped. She frowned. This was the city suburbs. Why did the guards of the wang fu suddenly stop without any cause?

The captain of the guard who was in charge of protecting Hua Xi Wan looked at the old couple who was lying in the middle of the road and showed wariness. He waved his hand for his subordinates to guard the carriage and inspected the surroundings. There was a lot of shrubbery and trees on the two sides of the road. It would be hard to discover if people were hiding within them.

“Go and see.” The guard captain had a guard who was usually the most reliable scout, but his hand was already on his sword.

When the “old couple” lying on the road saw the wang fu’s people did not fall for this, they suddenly jumped up and attacked the guard walking towards them. Who knew that the guard was prepared. An arrow flew out of his sleeve and killed one of the two where they were.

“Assemble!” The guard captain heard the sounds coming from the woods around and felt that it was not good. After the shield soldiers came forward, he saw dozens of arrows heading his way. He turned back to look at the carriage that was motionless and jumped onto the front of the carriage. He blocked the door and would not let any villains go near the door of the carriage.

“Leader, the guards of Xian Wang Fu are too brave. Our attacks are not effective!”

“Attack with fire. I don’t believe that a woman will not panic with so much going on. If she panics, the guards of Xian Wang Fu are useless no matter how strong they are.”

A qinwang fei’s carriage had the walls and roof made from steel. Normal arrows could not penetrate the carriage. But if they attacked with fire, they could force the people out of the carriage. It would not be late to act then.

Just as the guards of the wang fu thought that the attackers would retreat, some more people came out of the flora and were about to pour something onto the carriage even at the cost of their lives. Some of the guards were completely soaked and immediately detected something was wrong. This was oil?!

“Everyone careful—these people want to set fire!”

Bai Xia and Hong Ying who had come out with Hua Xi Wan changed expression and bent down to unsheathe the daggers they had hidden on their legs. They had serious expressions. At this time, Bai Xia noticed that a wang fu guard was retreating from the fight and coming closer to the carriage. Her brow creased slightly, and then she unhesitatingly kicked the guard aside. Caught off-guard, the guard fell down, and two matches dropped down.

The guard captain who was standing at the shaft of the carriage changed expression. Before he could move, Bai Xia cut that guard’s throat, and the movement was so clean that the guard captain couldn’t say a thing.

“Be careful. If they are not the closest and most trusted people, they cannot go near Wang Fei.” Bai Xia glanced at the guard captain. She took out a handkerchief to wipe the blood off her dagger and then returned to her original spot.

My mother, what servant girls does Wang Fei have? They are too vicious! While the guard captain did not change expression, he was thoughtful inside.

Suddenly, he heard the sound of a door being pulled down and turned back to look. He saw a foot wearing a pearl-encrusted and embroidered slipper come out. He stilled and then hurried to say, “Wang Fei, please….”

“The assassins want to use fire to force me out. How can I not do as they please?” Hua Xi Wan gripped the sword in her hand that could cut hair and briskly jumped off the carriage. Then she said, “The guards who have oil on your clothing—take those clothes off. Do not fight if you encounter fire; it is best to avoid them.”

The guards present immediately reddened. They were low-status people, and they were too embarrassed to take off their outer robes in front of the wang fei and the servant girls.

“The situation is an emergency. In the face of the enemy, everyone, do not care about convention.” Hua Xi Wan unsheathed her sword and threw the sheath to the side. She sneered. There were many rumors about her in Jing, and it was hard to know what was truth or lie. But it was a pity that the only thing these people did not know was that she had learned the Lu Family sword arts from her maternal grandfather’s side. While she was not invincible, it was still enough to defend against the enemy.

Wang Fei.” Bai Xia and Hong Ying retreated to Hua Xi Wan’s side. Bai Xia’s face was cold as she said, “These people clearly planned ahead. I suspect that this has to do with the Tang Miss.”

Hua Xi Wan sighed and looked at the guards in the surroundings. These were the guards whom she had especially taken with her today. All of them had been carefully picked just to prevent such a thing from happening.

Right now, all the factions in Jing were restless in the fight for the throne. How could she leave her home without any preparations, much less to see Hua Yi Liu who she had been at odds with previously? Even if she was returning to her paternal home, she would take enough guards.

Now those people who hid in the shadows finally couldn’t resist acting. She thought of the “Be careful on the road” that Hua Yi Liu had said when she left the monastery, and that face she could not see the expression of. She sighed.

No one had thought that Xian Wang Fei who had been rumored to be devastatingly beautiful and delicate was able to use a sword. When the first assassin fell under Xian Wang Fei’s sword, the assassins were not the only ones surprised—the wang fu guards were also very shocked.

From the shocked expressions of the assassins, these people did not know that Hua Xi Wan could use the sword. If Hua Yi Liu really hated her, why didn’t she tell the mastermind behind this that Hua Xi Wan knew martial arts?

Hua Xi Wan seemed to think of something and sighed. She turned to look in the direction of the monastery and then gripped her sword. “Since they dare to come, then naturally we shall not let them return.”

##

In the monastery, Hua Yi Liu sat in the dark. She looked at the sunlight by the window and touched her bangs. Then she said to the servant girl behind her, “What time is it?”

The servant girl looked worriedly at her and said in a small voice, “It is almost noon.”

“She must have already returned to the wang fu.” Hua Yi Liu stood to sit by the mirror. After carefully putting on her makeup, she drew a beautiful bold plum flower on her forehead. After examining it closely, she asked the servant girl, “Is it beautiful?”

The servant girl nodded dazedly.

Hua Yi Liu smiled bitterly and inserted a golden butterfly buyao into her hair. She looked at herself in the mirror and said, “I have never made a decision for myself in this lifetime. Finally, I managed to make one decision to do something, but everyone thinks that I am wrong. By the end, even I feel uncertain. In the past, I thought that I was more virtuous and gentle than Third Sister. She grew up being spoiled by Eldest Uncle. Other than that face, she was not as good as me in anything. Now I know that she is much stronger than me. A woman is not a winner because her needlework is good and she is gentle. She is stronger than me mentally.”

When she had first been sent to the monastery, she really wanted Hua Xi Wan to die immediately. But when someone found her and wanted to ally with her to scheme against Hua Xi Wan, she found that she actually didn’t want Hua Xi Wan to die.

Hua Xi Wan could do what she, Hua Yi Liu, wanted to but could not do. Hua Xi Wan could obtain what she wanted but didn’t even dare to think about. Hua Xi Wan could live the life that she didn’t even dare to dream about. She was jealous of Hua Xi Wan, crazily jealous, but she could not forget how moved she had been that day when she heard that Hua Xi Wan was blocking the gates of her husband’s home.

Even if she hated, she could not forget the warmth of Hua Xi Wan’s hand that reached out to her then. So at the last moment, she had lied to that person. She had said that Hua Xi Wan had been spoiled by her family and wasn’t special at all.

She wasn’t able to be bad to the end, but her personality was not generous. From her birth, her life was like a joke.

“Creak.”

The door was suddenly pushed open. The blinding light squeezed into the room. Hua Yi Liu had to squint to see who was standing by the door.

The man had a white face and a jade coronet. He was dressed in purple brocade. There were some broad guards standing behind him. Who was it but Yan Jin Qiu?

Hua Yi Liu stilled. Moments later, she suddenly laughed and said, “I didn’t think that I would be able to see you again.”

Yan Jin Qiu saw Hua Li Liu’s makeup that seemed to mimic Xi Wan’s and stood expressionlessly at the door. He did not go in. He waved his hand at the guards behind him.

Two guards silently walked into the room, each with a tray in his hands. However, what was on the trays was startling to see.

Hua Yi Liu looked at the two trays that were presented to her. One had poisoned wine and a dagger, the other had three meters of white cloth and poison pills. She looked fearlessly at Yan Jin Qiu. “This servant is just a normal female and actually troubled the honored wang ye to personally make a trip. This is a great honor for this servant.”

“You are a cousin of Hua Xi Wan; benwang is willing to give you this honor.” Yan Jin Qiu expressionlessly put his hand behind his back and turned his face, unwilling to look at Hua Yi Liu. “I had originally wanted to keep you alive for Xi Wan. But you thought what you should not, so I cannot leave you alive.”

“Thoughts that I should not have?!” Hua Yi Liu smiled bitterly. “Are your actions just to show my good sister, or out of sincerity?”

Yan Jin Qiu said coolly, “I do not need to tell you what I think.”

“I will accept that you want me to die today.” Hua Yi Liu picked up the jug of poisonous wine. She then stared with wide eyes at Yan Jin Qiu. “If you do anything to let down my sister, you will spend all your lifetimes as an animal and never have a good death.”

She did not believe in the sweet words of a man and did not believe that a male of the Imperial House would have a true heart. If Yan Jin Qiu truly obtained that highest position, would he still manage to be wholehearted to one single person?

“You overstep!” Mu Tong had not thought that Hua Yi Liu would dare to curse Wang Ye and lectured angrily, “A woman like you does not qualify to say such a thing.”

He really didn’t understand women. This Hua Yi Liu clearly hated and was jealous of Wang Fei, but her last words were in concern for Wang Fei. One really could not guess those thoughts.

The saying was that a woman’s thoughts were impossible to grasp, like a needle at the bottom of the ocean. This seemed to have some truth.

Hua Yi Liu snorted a laugh. It seemed that her so-called tender feeling for Yan Jin Qiu were just because she had been fooled by his appearance. She didn’t even have a basic understanding of him, so how could it be love?

Her thoughts had just been stirred by his reputation. Now that she saw clearly, she found that she was also common. No wonder she had ended up like this.

She snorted and took off the cover of the wine jug. She was about to down it all, but before the bottle reached her lips, the sound of hurried footsteps came from outside.

“Wait!”

No one had thought that Hua Xi Wan would appear here. Yan Jin Qiu showed a thread of frustration and then reached out to support the lightly panting Hua Xi Wan. “How come you returned?” He saw that Hua Xi Wan’s hair was disordered and she had clearly hurried here.

“I was attacked today, and on the way, the guards from the wang fu killed all the assassins. But when I returned in fright to the wang fu, Wang Ye, you were not there. I could only come out to find you.” Hua Xi Wan seemed to not see what was going on in the room. Her beautiful eyes looked at Yan Jin Qiu. “I have come to take you home—are you going to return with me?”

Yan Jin Qiu covered his forehead and smiled helplessly. “That is my fault. I will return with you.”

The servants present stared at each other. Seeing their masters turn and leave, they looked at Hua Yi Liu in the room and didn’t know what to do.

“Chief Steward Mu Tong, should this miss still take the wine?” a taijian asked carefully. Wang Fei had come, and although she didn’t say a thing, he felt that if they really had the woman in the room drink the poisoned wine, they would get in great trouble.

“Drink what wine?” Mu Tong raised an eyebrow. “Have them take good care of this tang miss. In the end, she is the tang miss of our wang fei.” After saying this, he did not look at the expressions of other people and left with a swish of his sleeve.

Wang Fei had personally made the trip. While she had not begged for mercy for this Hua Yi Liu on the surface, she had said what she needed to say. Since Wang Ye had not said more about taking this woman’s life, that meant that she could stay alive.

It could be seen that everything in the world had a bane. While Wang Ye was cold-blooded and scheming, there was the bane that was Wang Fei.

The other servants heard this and quickly put away the things they had just taken in. They then quickly disappeared from the monastery as though they had never come.

Hua Yi Liu stood in the deathly silent room. She laughed bitterly and dazedly sat on a chair.

“Miss!” The servant girl, pale from fright, charged into the room. She sighed in relief seeing that Hua Yi Liu was fine, and collapsed on the ground. “It is fortunate that Third Miss has come, fortunate…”

She suddenly stopped. Third Miss had come—then didn’t Third Miss know what Miss had done? When she thought of this, she hurriedly looked at Hua Yi Liu but only saw Hua Yi Liu’s dazed face.

Third Miss… was not pursuing this?

Mu Tong and the others came out of the monastery and saw that Wang Ye and Wang Fei had already entered the carriage. He walked next to the guard captain who had been protecting Hua Xi Wan today and asked in a small voice, “I heard the leader of the guard reinforcements say that when they arrived, all of the assassins had been killed. What happened?”

When the guard captain heard this, his rough face immediately changed color and was very pretty to look at.

Mu Tong frowned in puzzlement. What could make this guard captain who had followed Wang Ye for so many years show an expression like this—did he see a ghost?

  1. Probably only yan jinqiu and mu tong, aside from her personal servants, have seen hua xiwan split a rock with a kick.
First time yan jinqiu came prepared but returned with nothing. Hua yiliu saved by xiwan, again. But then again, now that the assassination failed, Hua xiwan lived, Hua yiliu also lived. The one that entice hua yiliu to with the plan must have itch on their butt right about now. And it won’t stop until hua yiliu is dead.

    1. Yes her benefactor will soon silence her for good. That was probably part of the initial plan any way. She had no power and no opportunity to wed YJQ. so why keep her alive to tell of your misdeeds.

      1. Since she has met YJQ there isn’t much point in killing her. Given that her life has been spared it would be assumed that she already disclosed everything she knows to save her own life. Killing her might not be difficult but it only creates more evidence of their connection without providing much benefit.

      2. It might not be easy to kill Hua Yi Liu, either. Mu Tong told the servants to take care of her well. His care probably includes guards to make sure nobody kills her, even herself.
I think the guard captain was part shocked at wangfei’s amazing battle prowess, and part at her demand the guards disrobe to prevent fire.

  2. Thank you for spoiling us 🙏

I don’t really want to feel but I am curious on who tried to scheme with the female cousin to kill HXW

    1. It’s probably Princess Rui… I had a feeling of foreshadowing when we got her input two or three chapters ago during the Crown Princess mourning period.

  3. So many mixed feelings over this… Author sure doesn’t like to use disposable characters…..

I think my comment in the last chapter pretty much sums up my thoughts on HYL. A pitiful person indeed, although I’m glad that at the very end, she at least remembered to return some of the favor shown to her.

HWX saving HYL surprises me a bit, but also makes sense, if she wanted HYL dead, she would have done so earlier. I guess HWX feels some pity for HYL? Wouldn’t be surprising, she did go pretty far out of her way to support HYL at her darkest hour.

… I still think it’s a pity that HYL chose to repay her in this manner but… sigh.

YJQ showing up at HYL’s instead of HWX’s side surprises me slightly. … Perhaps I was wrong and he’s not that smitten afterall, however much trust he has in her, I expected him to show up near her first. *shrug* I suspect he’s smitten enough not to drop her after he gets the throne at least.

I suppose next up is finding out who sent the assassins, so few probable people would stand to gain from this. Sheng Wang being the most obvious, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Emperor did this to test YJQ’s commitment to his wife, and to smoke out how prepared YJQ is to take the throne. Admittedly, I’m having issues understanding why bother, but my brain says this is a possibility 😛

      1. Would make sense, I mean YJQ already knows about her ability to protect herself. just one of those “This makes me think a bit more” things. Regardless of these small actions, JYQ has been sincere in most of his interactions with HWX I think.

There’s potentially an element of “unreliable narrator” as well, part of what I’m forming my opinion on YJQ is the novel implying that he’s two faced, so I keep wondering if he’s sincere constantly, but I know several people who “scheme” during work hours but are absolutely different people in private. It’s very possible JYQ is that type of person as well who can be horrible to enemies but have absolute loyalty in private.

      1. I didn’t even consider her for some reason. She definately has quite a few reasons to dislike HWX. Too fixated on other players I guess. ^^;

    1. He sent reinforcement so he is not abandoning her. He was good at calculating do he knew that his men could save her soon enough. Since the fake assassination story he knew how valiant his wife is and the fact that those asassin have all dead before the reinforcement came, it even shows how he would still be surprised by the strength of his wangfei. And from the
first sentence he said when seeing her coming abruptly, it’s obvious that he wasn’t at all worried even though he must have known what happened (he sent the reinforcement, right? ). I think he deliberately came to kill HYL personally with 2 possible outcome plan:
      1. HXW shouldn’t have the opportunity to stop him as she might go home firsr. But i believe that she went straight away back to the monastery. She was looking back there during the fight. .
      2. If he failed in the murder attempt because of her wangfei… HYL would at least finally be able to see that her wishful thinking and so called love was just a blind infatuation to a perfect image of a man in her head, she doesn’t know him at all, let alone to understand him, to give her the reason to talk about love. She could then perhaps really do self reflect and be peaceful after seeing the fact that those who really give affection and concern to her is only her family.
Despite being not so close and caring to her compare to the way XiWan with HCY, Xi wan still truly sees her as sister and sees the face of her uncle.
After this HXW can rest her worry about her family.
Btw…HXW has partly a bit regret that HYL turns this way, in the previous chapter she lamented that she could have been more friendly and nurtured HYL to be more self confident. If only she did that, things could have been different. That’s playing a role into her decision to rescue her in the end, I guess.
Well, fate and karma are just unpredictable. If only HYL, her mother and Yao shi weren’t jealous at her, HXW might have married someone else.
It’s a good lesson to all those jealous people 😏😁.
What goes around will come around.

      1. I’m not 100% sure if I can speak for my old self since it’s been quite a while since I wrote that comment but….

I agree in general. I was throwing some shade on the main relationship not to actively say that YQJ didn’t like HWX or anything but rather as an interlude for a heavier question like HWX versus the throne. The intent was to get people thinking along the lines of whether I was right or wrong about my assumptions and evaluating their actions more. I’m believe that at the point of this comment I was at least 80% sure that given an option between the two, YQJ would pick HWX in a heartbeat.

Putting it a different way, you could argue that my comment was a sensationalist one hahahaha. I do hope some other readers come across it and pay more attention to the main couple’s relationship regardless though, it’s an interesting relationship to ponder over regardless of why people pay attention to it hehe.

  4. Hua Xi Wan and her forces of baddassery XD

Do we even need a ML when THE MC is cooler than everyone else? Lol.

      1. Nothingggg~~~~
        Sleepp
        Waking up
        Ready to make marriage robes
Married with relative from her mother side
        become a lazy bun wife
        husband cnt angry,
        Live peacefully……
        the end

  5. Oooooooooo!
They are already a couple with no substantial love rivals but I am still shipping them!
The joy I feel when I get ETT update notification cannot be imagined. I think I have already read To Be a Virtuous Wife some 15 times and I know that as soon as ETT is complete it will get added to my go-to books list.

  6. Thanks for the extra release! Honestly surprised at the turn out. But also glad that HYL redeemed her character for me in my book.

  7. Thank you for the chapters! The author sure knows how to keep the readers anticipating for the next chapter.

Really liking how well written your translation is. It is so well written that I can imagine I am reading in chinese. ^^ Keep up the hard work. Many thanks for sharing this with us.

  8. “I heard the leader of the guard reinforcements say that when they arrived, all of the assassins had been killed. What happened?”

When the guard captain heard this, his rough face immediately changed color and was very pretty to look at.

In a daze, the guard captain mumbled, “That’s… w-we removed our clothes and Wang Fei finished them off…???”

    ——-
At any rate, thank you for the chapters!

  9. She decided to save her because she understood her position. That person came to her in the monastery and none of them knew. Even if she didn’t cooperate she would be killed….in the end she gave HXW a little protection by lying and for that and the warning about the road XW saved her

  10. Badass hxw is the best!

I’m crazy dream casting hxw if ever a drama to happen, I feel like gao yuan yuan or gulinazha’s aesthetic would fit.. But either one is too old, and one can’t act lol

  11. –When the guard captain heard this, his rough face immediately changed color and was very pretty to look at.–

pffft ahahahaha A blushing guard~ but I also want more details about the fight >~< more of fighting scenes with wangfei hehehe oh well, fight~o!

Thank you for the chapter (*^ω^)人(^ω^*) fu
.best of luck to HYL. If she can survive the next person to take her life~

  12. What a fantastic chapter <3. I'd be surprised but delighted if HYL survives to the end of the story. She's not a good person, but that doesn't matter from my perspective – everyone deserves happiness. And besides, only those who live have a chance to think things through and to make amends. Many schemers in this story deserved the same, but never got such a chance.

Re: translator comment "The author with the foreshadowing all those chapters ago.":
Lots of foreshadowing, indeed. Here's what I came up with (though I probably missed some):
    * HYL's "Be careful on the road.", and her disguising her expression etc. at the end of last chapter (though this was mentioned in the text itself).
    * HXW demonstrating her martial prowess, e.g. by destroying that artificial hill a long time ago
    * People constantly think HXW is either ugly, or pretty but vacuous – and apparently both rumors partly originated with HYL
    * When Mu Tong suggested they kill HYL a few chapters ago, YJQ got really angry. This time, Mu Tong knew better than to misunderstand his masters' subtle behavior.
    * Bai Xia and Hong Ying demonstrated something like martial prowess when HXW faked being assassinated – but did the story mention at any other points that they were skilled at combat? I don't recall. Oh, actually: Bai Xia sometimes reported stuff to HXW which she had no business knowing, e.g. she "overheard" stuff despite YJQ's insane secrecy. Maybe this hints at her being some kind of… Chinese equivalent of kunoichi?

Oh, and it's not really hidden, but still my favorite: HXW has demonstrated ultimate laziness over, and over, and over again in this story. But in this chapter, she rushes home after almost being assassinated, notices that YJQ isn't there, *immediately* realizes what he must be up to, immediately turns around, rushes back to HYL, and saves her in the nick of time. After all we've seen from her, HXW values her family more than her laziness. <3

    1. Or she had already known that her YJQ would immediately retaliate and rushed back but pretended she rushed home first

      1. Too easy to check. She probably did go home, but the story does not tell us how much time has elapsed between lines.

  13. I’m glad that Hua Yi Liu remembers who helped her in her time of need. She’s bitter and envious, but in the end she’s not as awful as we thought she is.

Now I just wonder who sent the assassins in the first place… The princess? Yan Bo Yi? It seems like a man usually wouldn’t act against a woman… so I’m thinking that it’s probably a woman.

  14. Man these last few chapters are pretty messed up crazy but the stupid cousin needs to be taught a good lesson don’t let her die just yet let her suffer and I stupid Emperor need to make him suffer too so irritating

  15. Wow. Amazing and world flipping.
I bet everyone is shook over our HXW capabilities. Serves them right. In the end, HYL still had a way out. But will she survive the aftermath of this failed assassination? Those who plotted, using her familial relationship with HXW, won’t be so generous, I think.

Thank you for the AMAZING translations. My everlasting kudos to you!

  16. Four chapters this week! Woot woot!
    Thank you so much!

I’m still confused about the whole fiasco with HYL though.
It was mentioned that she was sent to the monastery so her life can be spared, right?
Was it because she tried to seduce YJQ? Is that such a major crime that he wants her killed? I mean he could just ignore her? Or was it because she was insulting a wangfei?

I’m glad she’s still alive though. She’s such a complex character and really represents a real human being. We’re not black and white. We’re also not one dimensional.
HYL maybe a hateful person, but she’s still wise enough to recognize her own emotions and logic. I look forward to see the end of her arc.

    1. First, being sent to a monastery is almost something expected for someone who divorced/was reputed. The whole dishonored/stay in monastery as punishment/in a monastery can’t meet up with men to have sex sort of thing.

The Hua Family didn’t do that, but Yan Jin Qiu didn’t like her so he wanted her out of the way so she wouldn’t bring embarrassment to Hua Xi Wan.

Here, he wanted her killed because she essentially lured Hua Xi Wan to visit her in order to have her assassinated by other people. So Yan Jin Qiu, who is really the ruthless blackhearted villain of the story, wants her dead.

    2. You are forgetting the existing situation where everyone wants to sit on the throne, or at least wants to be on the winning side.

In the previous chapter, the author mention, that 2 strong candidates are YJQ and YBY/Sheng Junwang. From the very beginning, YJQ is playing the role of having no ambition to sit on the throne. He positioned himself as someone who cares more about filial/talent/scholar. Even after he married, if I am not wrong, he immediately said to HXW that he will treat her well, etc. It’s in accordance to the public face he already built.

When HYL started to pine for YJQ and instead of keeping it in her heart, she did some actions, that if certain people knows, it may tarnish the good image that YJQ has built. Imagine the rumor about him having other mistress and it’s none other than his own wife’s cousin, and a divorcee too. Rumors are scary, it’s part of propaganda and important tool in politics.

So, it’s better to nip it in the bud, when not so many people knows. Also, in the time when everyone is using everyone else as tool to reach for their own ambition, HYL is like enemy under the blanket, which is even more dangerous to YJQ and HXW. One wrong step, YBY will be the emperor and it will be the end of YJQ’s family, and in extend HXW’s family. HYL may not know the danger of her behavior, but the Hua Elders (her own father and HXW’s parents) knows. That’s why no one is complaining when she was sent to monastery. Because at least, she’s still alive.
      There are 2 options:
      1) She’s alive somewhere and has no contact with YJQ;
      2) She’s dead (Better she’s dead rather than putting risk to the rest of the family);

      1. Eh, don’t forget that HYL did actually insult (wangfei) HXW where non-family might hear, and that itself is a crime punishable by death in most cases. Wangye (YJQ) might consider her come-on to also be insulting to himself, his pride and his reputation, which might also lead to death in most cases.
Yes, alive, she’s also another liability to YJQ’s plans, open to bribery, emotional blackmail, and just plain old mood swings. She could try to get with YJQ again. She could even just insult HXW where others might hear, and thus major rumors of familial impropriety and improper relationships smear their reputations. Sooooo many reasons to lock the woman away.
HXW wouldn’t kill her, though, unless HYL directly and personally tried to kill her. That is almost certainly her current line in the sand.

  17. Thanks for the 4 chapters today. HXW and her maids are totally awesome. Even the Captain was blushing. Wonder who is trying to assasinate HXW? Bet hubby will not take it lying down.

  18. Some badass squad we’ve got!!!

Yet again, HXW to HLY’s rescue. I wonder just how long she will live in the monastery before she dies either by her own hands or the instigator’s.

The schemer(s) of this assassin have got some huge balls to target YJQ’s wangfei. Of course let HLY’s act slide this time around. I’m 200% sure he’s going to grind those involved into dusts never to be heard from again Lol!!!

As for the perpetrators, it’s definitely a collusion from ZQY’s family, Princess and MH. They are the only ones that are sure to benefit from HXW’s death.

Thanks for the 4 chapters!!!! 😍😍😍

  19. Wow, nice going HYL! If HXW died, HYL would probably be among the first suspects and be executed anyway, so this was a suicide mission in the first place. But before her imminent death, HYL decided not to bite HXW, but have a bite at HXW’s enemies instead. By lying to them, not only would HXW not die, but the enemies would expose themselves needlessly and have wasted this crucial window of opportunity. The protection around HXW would increase after this, and YJQ may even find the culprits.

Now all HXW has to do is find a way to convince YJQ not to bully those poor guards who had to strip in front of her. 😛

  20. oh ho~ here comes the Xian Couple, be prepared for the upcoming troubles schemer

  21. Whoa… what a heroic action. She’s really HXW 👍

Anyway do you intend to translate the next novel with the same author ?

    Thank you

    1. Not at this point which is really my answer to everything. Also, if I remember clearly, they start to become slightly repetitive.

  22. Thank you so much for translate this awesome story. I just started to read this after I’m finish with TBAVW. I’m really grateful to the translator. <3 <3

I have to say after reading TBAVW and ETT it's no wonder I started to get phobia of the misses from famous literal family…

What did they taught their children? Those female from scholar family seems to receive delusional symptoms. They really like to blame all their shortcoming and unluckiness on other people.
Well, this tangjia is not so bad compare to her mother and I really get a bad vibe from that empress to be. Not to mention the one who start this evil circle, Qin Bai Lu… I really can't forget that girl… She's the one who gave me this phobia….

By the way, loved the interaction between our wang ye and wangfei. I can't wait to see what evil scheme our wang ye would show us next.

  23. Ohhh I´m so happy that she didn´t die…please please let her live a ling and ascetic life now…tgo be a really virtuos one, since she has survived so long…really she is some kind of survivor…
And then just in the middle of the chapter I was thinking that every one of the females characters are good material to be a MC of a reincarnation novel…really how wonderful it would be to see the crown princess, this jiejie and Hou shi reincarnation novel? one where the crown princess don´t submit to her mother in law and is more strict with the crown prince…her family is a lovely one…so what if she tries to save her engament and do everything to marry the unfortunate husband of that Rui He princess instead…or really make that a thousand year iceberg Shengjunwang engaged to her before his parents passed away…and so on with the other two…

  24. Wooow, Bai Xia so smooth she even had time to wipe the blood off her blade after slitting someone’s throat. 😲😲
Does it mean not only HXW is training in martial arts, so does her maids when she goes to her maternal family during summers? I cant help but picture them training a la Mulan style complete with the singing
    “Let’s get down to business
To defeat the (Shengs?)” 😅😂😂 completely inappropriate song I know.😆😆

    HXW is too cool 😎

Tell me something
