Chapter Ninety-Six: Afraid of the Wife?

Zhao Xin Hong was one of the captains of the guard and could be said to be experienced, but when he thought of Wang Fei and her servant girls, he finally understood where the saying came from that women should not be offended.

Wang Fei and the servant girls are this.” Zhao Xing Hong gave a thumbs up to Mu Tong and then shook his head. “One cannot judge based on appearances, really cannot judge based on appearances.”

A scholarly person like Wang Ye would probably have to move back in front of someone as strong as Wang Fei. A woman who was beautiful and skilled in martial arts was someone whom most men could not accept.

“Our wang ye is also this!” Zhao Xin Hong gave thumbs up with both of hands, his face filled with admiration.

Mu Tong: “…”

Martial artists were martial artists—there were problems with their heads!

After Yan Jin Qiu accompanied Hua Xi Wan back to the wang fu, he turned round and charged into the imperial palace with anger on his face.

Ever since the Crown Princess had hung herself, Qilong Emperor became even more short-tempered, and the people in the palace would avoid being in his presence. Even so, in these short few months, Qilong Emperor had aged greatly.

When he heard that Xian Wang Fei had been the target of an attempted assassination, he was both shocked and angry. After a moment, he said, panting, “Summon Xian Wang.”

“Emperor.” When Yan Jin Qiu entered the hall, his eyes turned red before he spoke. He knelt in the center of the hall and said in a choked-up voice, “Emperor, this subject-nephew and Wang Fei are husband and wife, and deeply in love. Once, due to the guards’ carelessness, an assassin entered the fu and harmed her. This subject had already felt extremely remorseful. Who would imagine that assassins dared to act in broad daylight. Fortunately, the guards protected her with their lives, otherwise…”

Yan Jin Qiu almost wasn’t able to continue. A thread of terror appeared on his handsome face. “If Wang Fei were gone, this subject-nephew would want to go with her.”

“Nonsense! You are a man; you cannot act like this.” Qilong Emperor wanted to lecture Yan Jin Qiu, but seeing him act so out of his mind, he did not say anything. He could only comfort him. “Zhen heard this—is your wang fei all right?”

“Fortunately, my wife had learned some skill at defending herself from her maternal family. When the assassins attacked, she managed to last a few attacks and survive. But she was frightened, and fainted into sleep before we returned to the fu.” Yan Jin Qiu stared with bright eyes at Qilong Emperor. “Please, Emperor, help this subject-nephew.”

Qilong Emperor was also displeased, but this was not directed at Yan Jin Qiu but at someone else. After this event occurred, the first person he suspected was Yan Bo Yi.

That was because the rumors that he would be passing the throne to Yan Jin Qiu had grown in Jing. How could the ambitious Yan Bo Yi stand still? Who in Jing did not know how much Xian Wang loved Xian Wang Fei? If Xian Wang Fei died, Xian Wang would naturally be extremely affected, and it was unknown what reckless things he would do then.

Zhen knows.” Qilong Emperor nodded and said, “Go back and keep your wang fei company. Zhen will immediately send someone to investigate this matter.”

It was not easy to find the mastermind after the event. Most of the time, a scapegoat was found. Qilong Emperor and Yan Jin Qiu both knew this but no one said it.

Yan Jin Qiu was just expressing to the Emperor what he felt, and the Emperor was just using this matter to cut off some of Yan Bo Yi’s helpers. After Yan Bo Yi’s entire support was cut off, it would be time for him to close the net.

After Yan Jin Qiu left, Qilong Emperor smashed the teacup on his desk and then summoned with a dark face the captain of the imperial guard. This matter was related to members of the Imperial House, and he would take the chance to make a great furor about this matter.

Even if his throne could not be passed onto his own blood, he could not let Yan Bo Yi have it for free.

In Sheng Junwang Fu, Hou shi stood in the corridor and watched as several blue-robed people rushed towards Yan Bo Yi’s study. Her face had a slightly disdainful smile, and she only turned to leave after these people had disappeared.

Listening with a dark face to the report of his subordinate, Yan Bo Yi gritted out, “You sent so many people, and yet was unable to take down a woman?!”

The blue-robed man at the front said with embarrassment, “This subordinate had not expected that Xian Wang Fu would be so cautious, and that even Wang Fei’s servant girls are experts in martial arts.”

“Hmph.” Yan Bo Yi sneered. “Why don’t you just say that Xian Wang Fei is also a great martial artist?”

The blue-robed man was silent for a moment. “Xian Wang Fei’s martial skills are indeed extraordinary.”

Yan Bo Yi could not breathe. “How come ben wang didn’t know that Hua shi, a woman, knows martial arts?!”

All the blue-robed people were silent. None of them had expected that Yi’an Marquis Fu was so strange. The two sons were skilled in both scholarly and martial arts, and even their daughter had learned martial arts. That was raising their daughter as a man. Who would teach their daughter like this?

Seeing the strange expressions on the faces of the blue-robed men, Yan Bo Yi knew that there was no meaning in pressing further. He said, “Clean up after this matter. Do not let the Emperor or Yan Jin Qiu catch anything. Otherwise, they will definitely make trouble.”

“This subordinate understands.” The blue-robed leader hesitated and then gathered his courage to say, “Wang Ye, Xian Wang Fu’s wang fei is very skilled. This subordinate suspects the rumors about Xian Wang not taking any concubines because of his love for Xian Wang Fei are wrong.”

“You mean… Xian Wang is henpecked?” Yan Bo Yi’s face that usually did not show any expression was complicated. He seemed to be unable to think that his good cousin would be henpecked. “Do you have any proof of this?”

The blue-robed man struggled. “This subordinate’s people said that any man who saw Xian Wang Fei’s ferocious appearance would feel small.”

Yan Bo Yi: “…”

He waved his hand weakly. “Withdraw.”

This world was too complex, and he needed to use his mind more.

At this time, Hua Xi Wan who was being discussed behind her back was idly eating iced watermelon and reading the most popular novels from the streets. She listened to the female musician play the zither. Yan Jin Qiu who came back in the heat was so stimulated that he stole her half-full bowl of iced and sliced watermelon.

“If you want to eat, have the servants make another bowl?” Hua Xi Wan saw the sweat on his forehead and hurriedly stole the bowl back. “You are so heated—can your stomach tolerate iced watermelon?” Finishing, she waved with a hand at Bai Xia. “Get the tea that I had you set aside for cooling.”

Bai Xia handed the cold tea to Hua Xi Wan with a smile. Hua Xi Wan thrust the teacup into Yan Jin Qiu’s hand. “Drink this. Rest for a while before eating watermelon.”

Yan Jin Qiu obeyed and drank a few sips before speaking. “Just now, I sent messengers to the marquis fu to tell them not to worry.”

Hua Xi Wan raised an eyebrow. “I was just preparing to send people to the marquis fu. I hadn’t thought that you would rush to do it first. It seems that after a few more years, my paternal family will only recognize the son-in-law and not the daughter.” Finishing, she laughed. “It is fortunate that you thought of it. Otherwise, my paternal family would worry longer.”

“Your paternal family is my paternal family…” Yan Jin Qiu stilled as he felt that the words were not right. He immediately corrected himself. “Your parents are my parents—isn’t reassuring them something that I should do?”

Hua Xi Wan covered her mouth and laughed for a long while. After the heat on Yan Jin Qiu’s body dissipated, she had him change into a loose robe, and then the two of them picked a cool room where to sit together and read.

“Thanks for Jiejie’s matter today.”

Yan Jin Qiu turned to look at Hua Xi Wan. He saw that her expression was as usual, but the tips of her ears were slightly red. He said, “I originally just felt wronged on your behalf, so I wanted to end her life. But you think highly of your relationship with her, and I do not bear for you to be hurt.”

Hua Xi Wan’s hand stilled while flipping the page, and then she sighed. “I hope that Eldest Sister can live her days well after this matter.”

She was not someone who would return good for evil. She had just given Hua Yi Liu her last chance due to their past relationship and for the future interactions between the younger members of the Hua Family.

If she managed to save Hua Yi Liu now, Second Uncle and Cousin Hua Qing Mao would be in her debt. In the future, Hua Qing Mao would support Eldest Brother even more.

The reason why prestigious families were prestigious families was because they knew to show a sliver of mercy in every matter.

Translator Ramblings: If you show a tiny bit of mercy, people might pay you back in multitudes.

  1. Hehe, these servants are so cute~

So it really was Yan Bo Yi? *shakes head* looks like he’s getting too impatient, pity he didn’t realize this impatience was what caused his stock to drop in the eyes of the Qilong Emperor to begin with.

… LOL Don’t do it Yan Bo Yu, don’t be stupid enough to think QJY has no fangs, there’s no way he managed to survive such a long period of scheming by purely relying on not standing out.

Ah so it was also for scheming that she saved Hwa Yi Liu. Regardless of reason though, a life was saved, I still can’t bring myself to really hate Hwa Yi Liu personally. I think she’s more tragic than anything else.

    1. I agreed. She’s tragic. The whole fault lay on her mother, actually. The Hua’s men are great people, but sadly ancient Chinese didn’t partake much in educating their daughters. So Yi Liu, with all of her potential, could only be suppressed by her own mother; forced her to live in the shadow of Xi Wan’s beauty and… and that other cousin. If she was never raised by that damnable mother of hers, she would be completing the Hua’s three daughter sets: Virtuous, Talented, Beauty.

‘Cos she is really virtuous. Just, it was all lost because that damnable marriage her mother arranged for her. The previous chapter proved this one point true once more, since she actually threatens Yan Jin Qiu to treat Xi Wan wells, even if it was the same Jin Qiu that she tried to gain favor from before.

      1. I wouldn’t say it was all her mother’s fault. Whenever something goes wrong, it’s always blamed on the womenfolk but a lot of it could be blamed on the attitude of the men. Especially in this society where daughters are just married off, it’s normal for her to value the son more because that’s her support. And it’s her husband that kind of tacitly approved of her actions before anything can actually be done right?

      2. That’s actually what I mean also when I typed “but sadly ancient Chinese didn’t partake much in educating their daughters” but seems like I missed to type ‘men’ after ‘ancient Chinese’ orz

Since in this era women was merely an accessory, I bet his father has a thought of “it’s her job, what she’s been raised to do all along her life, she should be doing fine and my daughter won’t be slighted by her hand; at least not to the point when she’s miscarriaged, this woman would just stay silents”. He’s wrong, of course. But most men would in this era would probably think like him. There’s need to be love between two ancient Chinese couple so that mentality changed (and we all know that’s hard)

More than blaming Yi Liu’s mother as a woman, I was more blaming for her personality, since the other two madame (Xi Wan’s mother and the other cousin’s mother) is muchhhhhh bettteeeeeeeer in treating their daughters. And we all know how many smart Yi Liu’s grandmother actually is, which somehow did not get transferred to her daughter. Mystical. Wonder if the Chinese didn’t believe the scientific discovery that mother passed on their smarts to children… or maybe the author didn’t know.

      3. Ha, I’d add more thoughts to this but seeing you two comment about most of my own thoughts already combined with Lu Shi calling out the father as well in the next chapter means I don’t have anything left to say aside from I agree with all the points brought up here ^_^;

    2. The great thing about it is that Yan Bo Yi really DIDNT have anythin to do with most of the stuff which brought down his reputation. He just got outmanuevered and was too busy picking coals while someone else was already stokin the flames.

    3. HYL has always been jealous of HXW All three cousins came from the same families. Three brothers raised in the marquis. All scholars and martial artist.Their daughters were raised among the same principles. HYL’s mom was always looking for a way up the ladder. She was always greedy. She encouraged this in her daughter. HXW was sickly but took interest in her father’s doings. Mothers craaft many a thing in the house. But each child chooses their own way. HYL chose someone else’s toys. No remorse just greed.

  2. Thank you for the chapter!
I start to think this is a comedy novel. I was laughing so hard that my tears run down my face. Just imagine wang ye face if he knew what YBY and his handy discussing had me laughing.
This chapter highlight had to be this sentence,
“You mean… Xian Wang is henpecked?”

    1. He kind of is, remember the breaking of that fake mountain thing? The kicking of sandbags? He’s like an obedient kitty in front of her XD

      1. More like he’s a secret M. He has expressed before that he was awed by her that day.

Also “she was so frightened she fainted in the way back”? Pfttttt. We know what really happened.

Day by day, Yan Jin Qiu’s true nature as a Dorky person came out XD especially when his mouth is no longer as restrained XDD

I DON’T KNOW HOW SOME READERS CAN STILL QUESTION HIS FEELINGS FOR HXW WHEN HE’S LITERALLY WENT FILTERLESS IN FRONT OF HER LIKE THIS. IT SPEAKS OF GREAT COMFORT FOR HIM TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK THIS DORKILY

  3. Heh heh, the emperor would rather die than giving the throne to yan boyi. Let those two fight it out while yan jinqiu wait for the throne to drop on his lap. The emperor might even do it on purpose just to spite yan boyi. seeing how the throne he wanted so much being given to someone else right in front of his eye.

    1. The emperor would have to be convinced he could not possibly sire another heir of his own first. He is old, and tired, sure, but he is a randy old goat nonetheless.

  4. “The reason why prestigious families were prestigious families was because they knew to show a sliver of mercy in every matter.”

Well said, well said! Especially when you consider how merciless everyone else is. 🤷🏻‍♀️

YJQ is ruthless, but I feel like he has a better chance now that he takes HXW into consideration in going about things.

  5. I can’t breathe…. Laughing too much at the flabbergasted Royal Family from hearing Hua Xi Wan martial prowess XD

I remember YJQ reactions way back then too….priceless.

Think this just cemented my adoration for Hua Xi Wan eternally.
Her and Qu Qing Ju, one a valiant peerless beauty and the other a languid seductress with a subtle mind… I just can’t resist them, gotta love these noble elegant ladies who can be both laid back and fierce. 💓

    1. Do they even what henpecked means. How can this apply to our Wang Ye. He’s his own man. But he collaborates really well with his wife. It also helps his image if he’s seen this way from time to time. As a scholar they would like to think of him as a soft target and just when they thought they would take his pride and joy. She helps to stop their evil deed. It is really funny.

    1. I forgot to say, I do hope that HYL can eventually find a way to live happily, and possibly raise some children of her own, better than her mother did. HXW seems to imply it could be possible she’d be let out for good behavior.

  6. —but when he thought of Wang Fei and her servant girls, he finally understood where the saying came from that women should not be offended..—

Hahaha this guard used this saying well in a different way hahaha

“This subordinate’s people said that any man who saw Xian Wang Fei’s ferocious appearance would feel small.”

    Yan Bo Yi: “…”
    Me: (☉ₒ☉) what a ferocious couple~!

Thank you for the chapter \(#´▽`)人(´▽`#)ノ fu
..Yan Bo Yi needs to exhaust his mind to deal with this couple.

  7. Martial artists were martial artists—there were problems with their heads!

Of course because they’re are muscle head….😅😅

    ————–
“Fortunately, my wife had learned some skill at defending herself from her maternal family. When the assassins attacked, she managed to last a few attacks and survive. But she was frightened, and fainted into sleep before we returned to the fu.” Yan Jin Qiu stared with bright eyes at Qilong Emperor. “Please, Emperor, help this subject-nephew.”

No… she is not frightened…but has lazy disease. (of course dear husband knows about this…but it is better that other people doesn’t know this).

    ———
“You mean… Xian Wang is henpecked?” Yan Bo Yi’s face that usually did not show any expression was complicated.

I think he just knew some new amazing discovery, here…

    ———-
This world was too complex, and he needed to use his mind more.

hopefully, his brain didn’t fried from too much thinking.

    Thank you for the translation…😊😊😊

  8. I need the drama version just to see how astonishing goddess like HXW beat the assassins asses LOL

  9. …and no one suspected how xian wang fei and her servants could get so injured when assassins broke through their fu, when now it has been proved how baddass HXW and co were lol XD

    1. that was a “surprised” attack in an enclosed room…;) the other was more open with space to move… plus I am sure a certain someone has been manipulating the information….XD

    2. There were guards with her during this attack, the “assassination” before was a surprise attack and no guards to slow down their progress

  10. And some greedy enough to pay back in a completely side tracked way (teaming up with your enemies) – but hope not

  11. Or if you show mercy, they may just not learn, and come back for more (ex. all the Chinese novel females who want the male lead).

  12. I really hope HYL learned her lesson this time around. Thank you for the chapter <3

  13. This is not a tiny bit of mercy anymore…
Ohhh god hahahaha husband is afraid of wife…in the end it is like that, since husband really did change his ruthlesness since he got married with wife fufufu
And it is good his relationship with his paternal family..hahahaha now he is like a husband married into the wife house…

  14. “Hmph.” Yan Bo Yi sneered. “Why don’t you just say that Xian Wang Fei is also a great martial artist?”

The blue-robed man was silent for a moment. “Xian Wang Fei’s martial skills are indeed extraordinary.”

That was just too much!! Hahaha… So much disdain and the guard’s deadpan response. I was not expecting that at all, usually everything is so subtle, and we get a straight comedy scene! A bit over the top, but couldn’t stop laughing during this chapter.

Thanks so much for your efforts translating this series! It’s a gem.

  15. “translator Ramblings: If you show a tiny bit of mercy, people might pay you back in multitudes.”

MIGHT, yes but some people still bite back and more fiercely at that, even with all that forgiveness. Some people really are shameless. Haha somehow I became so vicious I’m thinking of killing them so early in the game. “cutting the grass without pulling the roots” is a big no no in this dog eat dog world.

  16. Hua master’s word previously was right, HXW is more scheming than her brother, if she was a man, the heir of Marquis Fu would have never been Hua chang bao hahaha.
She had mercy with hidden goals too 😅.
Wangfei is great, but Wangye is greater cos it’s not just any man who can handle a strong woman (in mind and physically).
Even today in modern era, not every man can tolerate having a wife who is successful and very intelligent.
Most men would feel insecure and end up decreasing their self-esteem.
Only a man with an exceptional mind and talent too would be able to handle than.
So, the guard leader was absolutely correct in giving thwe thumbs lol.
