Chapter 13 – Red Chamber (13)

The physician had been invited from Gusu. Supposedly, he had some family relation with the main Lin Family, and could count as one of their own people. Also, his skills were famed.

He took Dai Yu’s pulse, and then looked at the ginseng pills that had been made. His brow furrowed and then relaxed. He said, “It is the blessing of the heavens. The miss’ body cannot be nourished like that. Back then, Miss was young. Using ginseng was to supplement her energies. Now, she is older, and her body is weaker. She cannot use this ginseng. However, the ginseng in these pills had been stored for a long time, it has rotted, and does not have much effect. Otherwise, Miss’s health would be ruined.”

Lin Ru Hai nodded. He did not know what to say. Should he rejoice that they had given his daughter ineffective medicine?

Lin Yu Yang saw it was enough and respectfully invited the physician out. Lin Yu Tong came out from behind the screen and saw Lin Dai Yu walk out from behind the curtains with a pale face.

The sisters looked at each other. Lin Yu Tong could see the gratefulness in the other’s eyes.

She sighed inside. She did not think herself a good person, but there was no reason to blame a young girl because of the grievances of the last generation.

Also, this girl did not have any malicious intent at all.

She sighed and comforted Lin Ru Hai, “Right now, we must thank the heavens for this blessing.”

Lin Ru Hai laughed at himself and said to Lin Dai Yu, “Yu’er, you are tired from the trip, go rest now. Everything is fine now you are back home. Do not think too much. Father is here.”

Lin Dai Yu knew if she remained, her father and her sister could not talk openly. She curtsied to the two and then left with the support of a servant girl.

When Lin Yu Tong and Lin Ru Hai were the only people left in the room, Lin Ru Hai said, “Yu Tong, if not for your attention to detail today, it would have been a great tragedy.”

Lin Yu Tong gave a small smile, looked at Lin Ru Hai and waited for the next words.

“This father knows that Mistress was not good to you and your concubine-mother. But right now, this father can only rely on you to take care of Dai Yu.” Lin Ru Hai said with some difficulty. “You are able to take such good care of Yu Yang. You must be able to do the same with Dai Yu.”

Not necessarily!

Lin Yu Tong thought. Lin Yu Yang was someone who had lived the hard days with her. Brother and sister had the feelings from living with each other and they were able to trust each other. Dai Yu was different. She was born a bit smarter than others. Smart people usually had some different tempers. They were confident, it was hard for them to trust in others. They were proud. It was easy to be an elder sister, but she really could not be an elder sister that could guide.

Lin Dai Yu was proud, and she was a common person. They were two different types of people, they had different values. It would be difficult to even avoid arguing.

But she could not immediately refuse. She gave a vague answer, “Sister is smart. I have spoken clearly. She naturally will understand what she should.”

As to what she could not understand, for example, Jia Bao Yu, that was not something she could control.

Lin Ru Hai knew his eldest daughter’s temper. She had a hard tongue but a soft heart. While she was not happy to do this, she would not just stand by and watch. This was enough.

Lin Yu Tong returned to her room, feeling a bit depressed.

She felt that she was not engaging in her proper job.

She had used a lot of the spring water in her pocket space, but she had not gotten anything in return. The things that Lin Ru Hai gave could not be snuck into the pocket space if she wanted. These things were all recorded in books by the servant girls. She could not bring them.

Today, she saw the ginseng pills. She thought that the Lin Family had the recipe, or maybe the Jia Family.

In reality, she thought too low of the intelligence of the ancient people. How could something like a medicine recipe be everywhere in the world?

For example, if the family needed ginseng pills, the physician would give them a prescription with the ingredients to prepare. Then, the ingredients would be given to the physician. The physician would make the pills and then give the medicine to the patient. As to whether the ingredients from the prescription were what was needed for the medicine, no one knew. Maybe some were, but it wouldn’t be all. Maybe the physician would mix in two ingredients to cause confusion. The extra ingredients would be capital for the physician.

They were very good at secrecy.

She wondered if she should go look in the library of the Lin Family. If there were some lost books or the only copy, she could copy them down and send them back.

But they likely were not worth much. The lone copies were valuable because they were antiques. But honestly speaking, who cared about the contents? There were some research centers, but this kind of historical research was not popular. After all, they had no money! Also, without the support of antiques, who knew if the things she sent back were authentic or fakes.

She felt heartbroken thinking about it. Stuck in the Lin Family, her plan to gain money was forever just a plan.

She laid on the bed and thought, her life would be very long, so do not hurry, do not hurry.

The next day after resting for a night, Jia Lian successfully met his uncle, who was supposed to be dying soon.

But Lin Ru Hai did not look like he was about to stop breathing soon, even though he did not have a hale complexion.

Jia Lian cursed Wang Xi Feng inside for her unreliable information. Was this not being able to live long? Nonsense! He put away the shock on his face and respectfully bowed. “This nephew is reassured seeing that Uncle is healthy.”

Lin Ru Hai frowned. The officials of Yangzhou knew that he was ill, but there was a long way between Yangzhou and the capital. He did not know how the Jia Family knew of this.

It was hard to not even suspect them.

“Nephew, sit down!” Lin Ru Hai did not stand up and politely asked Jia Lian to sit down. “Just a minor illness, I did not expect even the capital to know.”

Jia Lian stilled. Hadn’t Uncle-in-law Lin told the family he was ill?

Oh! It looked like something was wrong. He was not good at studying or the martial arts, but in other aspects, he had some cleverness.

So he immediately smiled and said, “Uncle-in-law has an important position, and there naturally are many who pay attention.”

Lin Ru Hai smiled noncommittally. “Nephew was burdened to have to travel back and forth for Dai Yu. My office is busy and I neglected you. Yangzhou is a prosperous place. Nephew, you can go look around, there will be some gains.”

Jia Lian heard this and knew that Lin Ru Hai had no intentions of talking more with him.

Coming out of Lin Ru Hai’s study, he returned to the guest courtyard and increasingly felt that something was wrong.

This Uncle-in-law Lin did not ask about the old mistress at all, did not ask about the eldest master and mistress, and had no intentions of even talking courtesies.

The other sent him off with just a few words. The attitude was clearly distant. Why was it like this?

His family had taken care of the miss of the Lin Family for several years. Ignoring the in-law relationship, just from having taken care of his child, it should not be like this.

Something had to have happened. The only possibility was the inner courtyard of the Lin Family.

He stood and called for Wang’er. “Go inquire what happened with the Lin Family after Sister Lin returned.”

Wang’er saw that Second Master was really anxious and did not dare to mess around. He turned and left, coming back soon with a sad expression. “The people of the Lin Family have tight mouths, I did not get any answers. The people of the outer courtyard do not know what happens inside at all. This servant is not able to even get close to the gates of the inner courtyard.”

“Idiot!” Jia Lian kicked Wang’er. “If you are not able to get answers from other people, are you not able to get answers from the people brought from the Jia Family? That Zi Juan came from the old mistress’ rooms. Go find her and ask.”

Wang’er ran away as expected.

Zi Juan heard Xue Yan say that Wang’er was asking for her. She was slightly confused. She and Wang’er did not have any relationship.

When she saw Wang’er, she suddenly realized. It would be best if she managed to get the old mistress to know of this matter. Right now, she was by Miss’ side and it was inconvenient. She did not know when she would return to the capital. If the old mistress knew, it would be easy to clear up any misunderstandings. She really had not expected there to be something going on with Miss’ medicine.

So she did not hesitate and went with Wang’er to see Jia Lian, telling him what had happened.

Jia Lian was first shocked and then blushed red. This was the so-called taking care of the miss, but it was almost killing the other.

Thinking of how the old mistress told him to bring Sister Lin back no matter what and also bring along the newly recognized siblings, Jia Lian could not help but complain inside.

This was treating Uncle Lin as an idiot. Degrading one miss was not enough, you want to ruin all the sprouts in the other’s field before you are done!

If the Lin Family had no heir, would the Lin Family’s property be given to Bao Yu?

Nonsense!

After having this happen, what face did he have to keep staying in the Lin Family?

That afternoon, he met Lin Ru Hai and mentioned leaving. “When I reach the capital, it will be the twelfth month, and nearly the new year. The family must be missing me. I have come this time and am reassured knowing that Uncle is fine.”

Lin Ru Hai did not try to keep him, arranging for a ship and an escort of men before having his son see Jia Lian to the pier.

Ever since Lin Yu Tong learned that Zi Juan had met Jia Lian, she knew that Jia Lian would not stay for long. She immediately had Steward Lin prepare New Year’s gifts for the Jia Family.

She hadn’t expected Jia Lian to be a person who knew shame. He did not linger at all and left when he said so. The gifts were by the rules. Lin Yu Yang saw him off on the ship before returning.

“Second Master Lian left in such a hurry. He should have talked to Miss so that Miss could send letters back to the old mistress, the mistresses, the misses and Bao Yu,” Zi Juan complained in a low voice.

Xue Yan was arranging flowers in a vase and said unhappily, “We just returned home, what’s there to speak of? In the future, when Master goes to the capital as an official, there will naturally be a time to meet.”

Zi Juan heard this and said in surprise, “Miss isn’t returning to the Jia Family? How can that be so? Bao Yu is still waiting. If he sees that Miss has not returned, who knows what a fuss he will make?”

Lin Yu Tong was right outside Lin Dai Yu’s door when she heard such words. She could not help but frown……
