Chapter 40 – Red Chamber (40)
Lin Yu Yang nodded and said, “Good, do not let him have an accident after leaving our home.” Then he instructed Lin Ping, worried, “Tell the people who heard what Second Miss and the young master of the Jia Family said in the room. If I hear any gossip, do not blame me for not having mercy.”
“Young Master, do not worry, the ones serving in the room are trustworthy,” Lin Ping said in a low voice.
Lin Yu Yang exhaled in relief and settled. Thinking that his sister was not feeling well, he was worried about her. He had not seen his sister ill much. He immediately arranged, “Send someone to invite a palace physician to visit the eldest miss.” While she said she was fine, if a palace physician did not take a look, how could he be assured?
Lin Ping acknowledged and left.
When Lin Yu Tong woke up, her belly felt much better. She was irritated lying in bed. How come she had not prepared some hot pockets in her space at the start? It was so inconvenient right now. She noted these down, to avoid forgetting this after being used to it after a long time.
Chun’er came in and helped Lin Yu Tong wash. Then she said, “Miss, Young Master invited a palace physician who is waiting outside right now.”
“Invited a palace physician? I am fine.” Lin Yu Tong was not willing for her personal matters to be known to everyone.
“Miss, do not worry, these palace physicians are smart. They know what to say, and what they cannot say. You just need to have him take a look, and he will know what to say.” Chun’er urged with a smile. She knew that the miss was embarrassed. When there was no female elder in the home, this was a shortcoming.
Lin Yu Tong thought of her brother’s personality and nodded, saying, “In a while, have him visit Second Miss as well. See if she is fine.”
Chun’er acknowledged and had Lin Yu Tong sit down on the couch. Then, a gauze curtain was hung in front of her. She stretched her hand through the curtain. Chun’er covered Lin Yu Tong’s hand and wrist with a silk handkerchief before standing and calling the palace physician in.
Lin Yu Tong was shocked and thought, such a visit, the physician could only take her pulse. Look, never mind that. Who will allow you to look at the mistresses and missuses of noble households. Here, this was not possible. A physician was not allowed to hear the voices of the women, much less smell anything. And, even if the physician asked, it would be the servant girls or the grannies who would answer. In reality, no one would answer on behalf of the patient. They could only rely on the pulse for a diagnosis.
So, this demanded highly of the physician.
Lin Yu Tong thought, in this world, so many children had stepmothers. This proved that the rate of death for women was higher than men. For example, many illnesses needed acupuncture, but could that be performed on women? There were no female physicians. Even women themselves thought their reputations were more important than their lives. At key times, they could just watch as they died.
Thinking about this, her heart felt heavy, but in such a society, what could she do?
A long time after the physician left, Lin Dai Yu came to visit, and Lin Yu Tong was still in a daze on the couch.
“Sister, what are you thinking about?” Lin Dai Yu asked.
Lin Yu Tong finally woke up and smiled seeing it was Lin Dai Yu, “Has the palace physician visited you?”
Lin Dai Yu nodded and said, “Just the same words, no great illness. Sister, are you feeling better?”
“En!” Lin Yu Tong had her sit and said, “I just feel bad on the first day, will feel better after. It will pass in three to five days.”
“That’s good.” Lin Dai Yu put aside her curiosity and asked, “Sister, what were you thinking about now?”
“Just thinking about the difficulties of us women.” Lin Yu Tong spoke of what she had thought and said, “If there were female physicians, it would be better. Pity, the only women related to a physician is the midwife. But the midwives know nothing except to deliver children. It is worrisome, giving your life into the hands of these people.”
Lin Dai Yu was dazed for a moment. She suddenly felt that her sister was a very complicated person. She seemed to value the rules very much. In interacting with people, she did not dare to make even a single mistake. But in reality, she was someone who looked down on such rules. She had sensed this back when her sister told her to publish her poems. Now, the suggestion she gave was deviant.
When Lin Dai Yu returned to her own yard, she was still thinking about what Lin Yu Tong had said. She could not help but think of her mother, Jia Min. Did her death have some of this cause?
“Xue Yan!” Lin Dai Yu called. Zi Juan was locked up and still learning the rules. She was more willing to use Xue Yan for some matters.
“Miss, what is it?” Xue Yan was steadier, but still more lively than the other servant girls. However, Dai Yu always thought of how they had kept her company for two years.
“Move over the medicine books on the last shelf,” Lin Dai Yu ordered.
“Miss, why did you think of reading those pains, they take so much effort,” Xue Yan said as she went toward the shelf.
“I have free time,” Lin Dai Yu said.
When Lin Ru Hai returned to the residence, he learned the family had invited a palace physician. He hurriedly called the physician into his study and asked. In the end, he managed to hear something and he was reassured. Seeing that this palace physician was very experienced and reliable in his words, he gave the other a lot of gold as payment before seeing the other off. He called Sister-in-law Ping in and instructed, “Eldest Miss is young, if she does not understand anything, you just tell her. I will reward you later.”
Sister-in-law Ping hurriedly agreed. In reality, Eldest Miss was very easy to get along with. She was very willing to help. Leaving Lin Ru Hai’s courtyard, Lin Yu Yang called her.
Sister-in-law Ping could only force herself to say to Lin Yu Yang, “Just an illness women have, it is fine!”
Lin Yu Yang saw that Sister-in-law Ping’s expression was only embarrassed and not nervous and believed her. Seeing that Father had not said more, he knew that it was likely fine. So he only told Sister-in-law Ping to take good care of Lin Yu Tong, rewarded her with twenty silver, and could do nothing else.
Wen Tian Fang had put people on patrol around the Lin Family. Learning that the Lin Family had invited a palace physician, they hurriedly told Wen Tian Fang. Wen Tian Fang stilled. He knew it would not be the father or son ill because this morning, he had seen his father-in-law at court, and he had spent half a day with his brother-in-law. If it was not the father and son, it could only be the Lin sisters. He wanted to go visit and see, but if this was his sister-in-law’s illness, it would not be good to have visited. So he invited the palace physician who had visited to his home and carefully asked about the cause. The palace physician knew of Jinghai Count’s relation to the Lin Family, and thought he was asking about his partner’s health. For unmarried men and women, the families would learn about the other side’s health. The Jinghai Count did not have any elders, and it was natural that he inquired for himself. So the palace physician expressed that the eldest miss of the Lin Family was very healthy. There was nothing that could not be said. He implied to Wen Tian Fang that Eldest Miss Lin’s body was very good for children and promised it.
Wen Tian Fang was shocked and a bit embarrassed. He rewarded the palace physician and then helplessly sent him away. Everyone would think of children, but to a person like him, being able to encounter someone who could keep him company was already good luck. To him, if he did not have any, he would not be disappointed. If he had children, it would be a joyful surprise. He had planned to visit her family, but now, he could only pretend to not know.
When Jia Bao Yu returned to the Jia Family, he told the old mistress, and then went back to his own rooms, a bit depressed.
Xi Ren saw this and could not help but ask, “Did you not see Miss Lin? Or did Uncle-in-law Lin catch you and ask about your studies?”
Jia Bao Yu turned around, leaving Xi Ren his back. “What do you know? Sister saw me, and would not ignore me.”
“You are like this, there must be a reason?” Xi Ren smiled and asked.
Qing Wen listened from the side and sneered, saying, “Men have matters outside. Even if a step is taken, you have to know about it. Bao Yu is grown up now, but you still follow him and control him like a wet nurse. If our official missus comes in the future, she will not control the master like this. You are even more arrogant than the missus. If Bao Yu goes out, you will ask in detail, wanting to know who he spoke to, how many bites of food he had to eat, and how many servants he found. With such a virtuous person, which miss dares to marry in? If they are not as good, you will outshine them. I do not know if you do this for Bao Yu or have other thoughts.”
Even if Xi Ren had a good personality, she did not dare to accept such an accusation. She turned and said, “Miss is talking about me?”
“The person will know.” Qing Wen flung the curtain and turned to leave.
Xi Ren paled in anger.
Jia Bao Yu felt that the good women suddenly all grew ugly. Today, he had wanted to protect Sister Bao’s face, but for some reason, he had offended her with a word. He thought that if Sister Lin helped, it would help the feelings between her and Sister Bao. But he offended Sister Lin instead. He always felt that he understood the thoughts of women, but now he knew, he did not know anything. He could not help but think, what was interesting about these days? It would be better for him to “come into the world naked, and leave with none to care.”
The next day, Lin Yu Tong was uncomfortable but got up and was busy with the matters of the Dragon Boat Festival. The first matter was the zongzi. This year’s were more delicious than the ones she had in the past. Disregarding the rice that was selected, just from the red dates, red bean paste, meat, salted duck egg and others, the ones from the modern world could not compare to these. One would not find dates with pockmarks from worms in the red date zongzi. She instructed the kitchen to make fine small zongzi tied up with five colored thread as gifts for the Dragon Boat Festival and sent them away. She only made the ones for Wen Tian Fang herself, most of them meat or ham filling, or salted duck egg and chicken egg. As to the Jia Family, she just sent them some as a token.
Because she sent someone with the zongzi, she learned that the Jia Family took the order from Yuan Chun and went to the Qingxu Monastery for a Daoist to expiate the sins of the dead. When Lin Yu Tong had read the book, she had been very repelled by Wang Xi Feng entering and slapping a child. She thought the present Feng-jie’er would not do this.
Wang Xi Feng truly had been transformed. While she did not do kind things out of the kindness of her heart, and mostly because of the benefits, if she did kind things, who cared about the reason? At least, this time, she had her servant girl grab a handful of coins for the young Daoist, and see him off.
Lin Yu Tong thought there may not be an argument as Lin Dai Yu did not go this time. As to whether Jia Bao Yu would get the gold kirin like last time, it was not something she could predict.
She had just put down the matters of the Jia Family when a servant came to report that Xue Bao Chai had come with festival gifts, and was right outside the gates. She asked if Lin Yu Tong was going to meet her.
Xue Bao Chai did not trust Madam Wang and could not help but keep an eye on Madam Wang’s movements. Seeing the other had not acted at all, much less going to the Lin Family, or even sending a servant girl, she knew what was going on. But even though she knew her aunt accepted the silver and did not act, she could not go and openly ask her aunt. She was worried about her brother. In reality, she did not know when the blade would fall. It was very worrisome. The Jia Family went to the Qingxu Temple. Because of her family’s matter, they had not been invited. She took the chance to come to the Lin Family. Even if the Lin Family had many demands, if the matter could be resolved, it was better than giving the silver to her aunt for nothing.
The gates of the Lin Family were busy. There were lines of people with gifts. Most of them just left behind a note and their gifts, and then left with a gift box that the Lin Family had prepared with tiger balm. Xue Bao Chai had no confidence that she could enter the gates. She had food and drink in her carriage, planning to wait until night if needed.
In reality, Lin Yu Tong did not know of the conflict between Wen Tian Fang, Lin Yu Yang and Xue Pan, so she was puzzled by Xue Bao Chai’s visit. At present, without someone’s invitation, it was not common for a miss to come out to visit alone without an elder. The visitor was a guest, and this was not the same as the people outside the gates who had come to the Lin Family in order to make a connection.
Regardless, she could not leave a miss outside. What if someone collided with her? She had to be invited in.
Lin Dai Yu got the news and hurried over, saying, “I know why.” She told Lin Yu Tong the events of yesterday. She had just heard Jia Bao Yu say a few words, and did not know the details.
Lin Yu Tong had not expected such a thing. “Go rest, I will take care of it.”
“Sister, you do not need to care about my face.” Lin Dai Yu stood up and said, “There is no reason for Brother to suffer outside.” Inside, she thought, the Jinghai Count was usually outside, and there was no possibility that he had been bullied. Brother must have been the one bullied and the Jinghai Count had helped the Lin Family. Compared to the Jinghai Count, Bao Yu’s actions did not count for much.
Lin Yu Tong was shocked and then said, “Oh! I see.” When Lin Dai Yu left, she was unable to guess the other’s thoughts.
She turned and told the servant girl, “Send someone to invite Miss Xue in.”
Xue Bao Chai heard the invitation from the Lin Family and sighed in relief. Such a hot day. Inside the carriage, she did not know if it was because of the heat or her panic that her clothing was soaked in sweat. Ying’er helped Xue Bao Chai and they walked in behind the servant girl of the Lin Family. Walking in, she truly felt what it meant when courtyards were said to be deep. The inner courtyard of a noble family was not so easy to enter. At each door, another servant girl or a granny would lead the way. Walking along the corridors, she felt that each turn brought new scenery. This was not anything that the Xue Family could compare to. Even during the Xue Family’s peak, they were not so magnificent. Thinking of Lin Yu Tong’s attitude towards her back when living with the Jia Family, she did not find it hard to accept. In Jiangnan, she had met many noble misses from families of important officials. It was not an easy matter for someone like her to get someone like them to talk more. When had she started to swell up? Yes! It was after entering the Jia Family. Everyone praised her for being better than the misses of the Jia Family. But thinking about it now, was her conduct appropriate?
A person who was living as a guest in the other’s home. Was this not upstaging the host? It was because the Jia Family was in chaos that something like this could occur. She feared in the Lin Family, if someone dared to use their miss as a stepping stone, they would have been swept out the door early. The three misses of the Jia Family always appeared together, and none of them were on good terms with her alone. Even Tan Chun likely only did so because of Aunt. But the three misses of the Jia Family liked to go to the Lin Family’s courtyard back when the sisters had been living in the Jia Family. When had she ever seen them go to her rooms to seek her?
Thinking about it now, all these events were so clear. She appeared to be good all over, but inside, did they truly like her, and feel that she was good?
The attitude of the Lin sisters towards her was likely the most real.
Lin Yu Tong never would have thought that Xue Bao Chai would have finished a self-reflection in such a place.
The two politely greeted each other. Tea was served and Lin Yu Tong said, “You had to wait for so long. However, it was not on purpose. You came suddenly, and I had to know the cause. So I asked the servants and it took some time. I rarely ask about the matters of the men outside. Yang-ge’er did not say, and I did not know. I only learned of the story when I asked.”
Xue Bao Chai did not expect that Lin Yu Tong would speak openly of the matter. She forced a smile. “Eldest Miss Lin, you know my brother, he is just a mixed up person. He is used to being a scoundrel. My mother and I are unable to control him. He has offended people, and there is no one in the family who can take care of this matter so I shamelessly came to you.”
Lin Yu Tong raised her eyebrows at the words. She said that her family was in the wrong, but because there was no man outside to take care of matters, she came abruptly to her to apologize and show their seriousness. Whether or not it was truly like this, it was hard for her to refute this. The Lin Family and the Jinghai Count were not people who could be dealt with using a steward to deliver some gifts. If they did that, then they were looking down on people, and would offend them greatly. If the men of the Jia Family stepped up, it would be the best. But who in the Jia Family would step up for the Xue Family? Jia Zheng or Jia Bao Yu, or Jia Lian? Jia Zheng was used to being an example and would not touch this matter. Jia Bao Yu was still like a child, and could not be used like an adult. Jia Lian was clever, and adding on Wang Xi Feng was not willing to be involved, he would not take the matter on himself.
So, the difficulties in Xue Bao Chai’s words existed. Lin Yu Tong nodded in agreement with her words.
Xue Bao Chai was reassured and said, “My brother is in the wrong, I hope that Eldest Miss Lin will help. Regardless of the price, if the Xue Family can afford it, we will not dare to refuse.”
Lin Yu Tong liked wealth, but was not so shameless as to cheat other people. If she truly did that, she would not have a good reputation. What benefit would it be to Lin Ru Hai and Lin Yu Yang? Also based on her little understanding of the Wen Tian Fang, she knew the other would not do anything that others could catch. He would not do something like have his subordinates seal the Xue Family’s shops right after having a conflict with the Xue Family, and arrest the members of the family. Wouldn’t that be an abuse of power for a personal matter? Many people would talk about it. So, even if he was angry, he would not immediately act. After a year or so, he would slowly sort the other out. He would not let people think that it was related to the matter right now. So if she agreed right now to Xue Bao Chai’s request, it was fine because her family and Wen Tian Fang did not plan to do anything right now.
So she smiled and said, “If it is for this, Miss Xue, you do not need to worry. Yang-ge’er did not say anything after coming back. It means that he does not have this matter on his mind. As to the Jinghai Count, he is even more busy, he will not remember this. You worry too much.”
Xue Bao Chai stilled and then understood the meaning. She was saying that they thought nothing of her brother. Like a dog barking by the street, if he dared to bark at others, they could just drive him away. Who would think of getting revenge on a mad dog? They would just turn around and forget him.
As she sighed in relief, she also felt depressed. The disparity in status was a gap that could not be bridged.
Even when she was being sent out the door by the servant girls, Xue Bao Chai was still in a daze. In the past, she did not understand why her mother insisted on the noble households. Now, she truly felt her mother’s pains. This was the fastest way a woman could change their identity. Regardless of if they married a scholar and waited for him to pass the examinations, or birthed a good son to raise, waiting to be an old lady, it was too uncertain. It was not as fast and steady as marrying into a noble family. Her birth meant that marrying into a noble family was not an easy matter. Even if she became a wife to the old men after their first wives died, they may not be willing. Even the eldest mistress of the Jia Family, Madam Xing came from an official’s family. Even now, she was awkward in the Jia Family, much less someone like her. Her birth was low, her father was dead, her brother could not be depended on, and would drag her back. She did not have the birth or the background. The wealth she had was declining. She counted on her fingers. Like this, Jia Bao Yu was the best marriage she could achieve.
Returning to the home, Aunt Xue saw her daughter like this and asked, “Did it work? Or did she say unpleasant things?”
Xue Bao Chai shook her head and said, “She was very polite and did not make it difficult for me. She just said that they did not keep this matter on their mind and sent me out.” Then she took out the box up her sleeve. “They did not demand anything, did not accept anything, just said that the matter has passed.”
Aunt Xue was happy. “This is a good thing, what is with you?”
“Mother, it is best not to mention anything to Aunt, to avoid any embarrassment,” Xue Bao Chai said vaguely.
Aunt Xue paused and understood her daughter’s meaning. She was truly in agreement with her own plans and agreed to a marriage with Bao Yu. “My child has suffered.”
“Mother, just scold Brother. This matter is only one time. I will not go beg for mercy for him again,” Xue Bao Chai said and returned to her own rooms, still feeling depressed.
Lin Yu Tong sighed over this Xue Bao Chai.Compared to Lin Dai Yu, she could only say that a different family environment created two different women.
Before Lin Dai Yu went to the Jia Family, she had been spoiled by her family. It could be seen from Lin Ru Hai’s attitude. They had hoped for more than a decade, and only got this precious daughter. He held her in the palm of his hand, afraid of anything happening to her. She was born weak. Lin Ru Hai and Jia Min raised her like a treasure, not daring to have anything happen that she did not like. She had been spoiled to the point people could only go along with her, and there was no reason for her to go along with others. The Lin Family was a lone branch, and the family was very simple. In her world, there were no connections that she had to take care of. This was different from Xue Bao Chai. Her family had been an imperial merchant. From how she recognized pawn receipts, one would know that even though she had not participated in outside matters, she had learned some by absorbing. Also, the Xue Family did not just have one branch. Xue Ke, Xue Bao Qin, they were her cousins. This proved that the Xue Family was a very complex family. Taking care of relationships was something she had to learn. These two women, one suddenly lost their mother, the other their father. Lin Dai Yu became more sensitive and weak, Xue Bao Chai more strong.
Lin Yu Tong sometimes thought that this proved that Lin Dai Yu’s life before had been too perfect and Lin Ru Hai protected her too much.
When Lin Yu Yang returned, Lin Yu Tong told him why Xue Bao Chai had come. Lin Yu Yang smiled and said, “What kind of person is Brother-in-law? To hold a grudge against him is to degrade himself.”
Oh! He had such a smooth way of saying brother-in-law! It seemed that Wen Tian Fang spent a lot of time increasing his positive feeling with her brother.
“Then it is all right,” Lin Yu Tong smiled. “We do not need to pay attention to such a person. They will be able to kill themselves.”
Lin Yu Yang nodded and did not speak.
Over in the Jia Family, after Madam Wang finished with the Dragon Boat Festival, she accidentally heard that Xue Bao Chai had gone in person to the Lin Family. She frowned and felt a bit uneasy. Did the other not trust her, and from the start, had doubts? However, after waiting several days, and not seeing the Xue mother and daughter come to visit, she could not help but start guessing again.
The sun of noon was strong, and Wang-shi laid on the couch, her eyes closed, and her heart settled. Even if her sister had any thoughts, she could only bear it. She knew what her sister wanted, for Bao-yatou to marry Bao Yu. Honestly, just from Bao-yatou alone, no one was more suitable. She knew her son. Hoping that he would study and become an official was just a dream that she fooled herself with. He had such a personality, and it was very important that he had a reliable wife. Otherwise, she would die with worries. Bao-yatou had a good personality and appearance. However, she just lacked a good birth. Lin-yatou had a good birth, but with her personality, she could not be a wife able to support a household. Bao Yu had a child’s personality. Would she find a wife for him that was even more delicate? But for her son’s future, if the Lin Family was willing, she was willing to have this match. At worst, she would just help them out. Thinking of this, she thought that the Lin Family would not be willing to agree, looking down on her family. She felt a hint of dissatisfaction. She thought, with Lin-yatou‘s health, it was unknown if she could even get pregnant.
Thinking like this, she dozed off.
Jia Bao Yu was bored and for some unknown reason, he made his way to the main room. He saw Jin Chuan massaging Mistress’ leg and walked over. Jin Chuan paused and Madam Wang woke up, sensing that someone had come in. However, seeing that Jin Chuan had not made a sound, she knew it was not an outsider.
“I saw you dozing off,” Jia Bao Yu said in a low voice.
Madam Wang heard that it was her son and frowned. It was noon, he did not rest in his own rooms. What was he doing out? She did not know what his servants were doing, not attentive at all. That Xi Ren was more and more useless.
A beat later, Jin Chuan did not answer. Madam Wang felt that this servant girl was a cautious one. Also, she could not see what the two of them were doing behind her.
“What are you in a hurry for? What should be yours will be yours,” Jin Chuan lectured in a low voice.
Madam Wang was instantly furious. What was “what should be yours will be yours?” Who had agreed to give her to Bao Yu? While the old mistress had the habit of giving her servant girls to her sons, for example, Concubine Zhao had once been the old mistress’s servant girl, she hated such a habit very much. She had suffered so much with Concubine Zhao and would not allow these lowly people to serve her son. Otherwise, why did she not put people into her son’s rooms, and just helplessly tried to recruit the servant girls the old mistress had given?
She heard Jin Chuan say, “Go next door to catch Huan-ge’er and Cai Yun.”
She was urging Bao Yu to catch people in the act. First, not to mention the consequences of Bao Yu truly catching them in the act, in the Jia Family, the thing that could not be mentioned was “catching people.” Madam Wang felt blood rush into her head. The family just did not inquire about their reputation outside, how could they not know? They all knew the saying, “Other than the stone statues at the gates, there is nothing else clean.” She was a servant girl, but spoke of catching people in the act. Then her rooms would become a place of loose morals. There was a saying called, “Point at the monk and call him bald.” Right now, Madam Wang was stuck in such awkwardness and embarrassment.
So without a word, she turned and slapped Jin Chuan.
Only when Jin Chuan threw herself into a well and die did Lin Yu Tong hear about it from Wang Xi Feng who came to visit. When Lin Yu Tong read the original work, she had felt that Jin Chuan’s conduct could be said to be frivolous. She remembered that Jin Chuan had teased Bao Yu about eating the rouge from her lips. She remembered the phrase from the book, “If the gold hairpin falls into the well, what should be yours will be yours.” A servant had ambitions. Lin Yu Tong did not look down on her for that. A servant was still a person. Who did not have thoughts for themselves? But when kicked out, she chose to kill herself. Lin Yu Tong felt that Xue Bao Chai’s opinion was somewhat right. The other was a muddled person. One could not say that her conduct was to be accepted just because she had died.
Jin Chuan had been kicked out. She was free. She got her freedom. In some people’s views, was freedom not good? The outside world was difficult, but most people lived like that. Also, after being with Madam Wang for so many years, did she not have any savings at all? How could she not be able to survive? Lin Yu Tong felt that maybe Jin Chuan was embarrassed. From a certain point of view, this was a person who did not have a strong mind. Xue Bao Chai was able to say such a thing, and while it was the reason that Madam Wang wanted to find an excuse, one could not say that she did not have her own opinion there. Xue Bao Chai was a person who was able to give up her face. Even if she was targeted by Mother Jia, she could maintain her expression and pretend to not know. Even when Lin Yu Tong had caught her in the act of lying and slandering Lin Dai Yu, she still was able to maintain herself. Such a quality of mind. She may truly feel that Jin Chuan had been foolish. Why die for such a minor matter? In her view, after a few days, who would remember this? If she gritted her teeth, wouldn’t it pass?
Lin Yu Tong just sighed. She had no relationship with Jin Chuan. In other words, the blisters on the feet were caused by one’s own steps. At this point, Lin Yu Tong could give sympathy.
Wang Xi Feng sighed. “I do not know what is with the eyes of these people. They all like Bao Yu. Honestly, I think that he is not better than Second Master Lian. While my husband is a bit of a scoundrel, he takes on the responsibilities of a man. But only him, it chills the heart……”
Of course Lin Yu Tong would not keep the matter a secret. Xue Yan turned and told Lin Dai Yu. She was silent for a moment and said, “There is no need to tell me the matters of the Jia Family.” Then she buried herself in her medicine books.
Xue Yan knew the matters of the Jia Family in Lin Dai Yu’s words meant the matters of Second Master Bao.
Translator Ramblings: The complete manuscript of Dream of the Red Chamber was lost, with the author’s initial 80 chapters and then another 40 which has uncertain authorship. Because of the foreshadowing, the readers know that Lin Dai Yu and Jia Bao Yu are fated to be a tragedy, and he marries Xue Bao Chai. But exactly what went on is more foreshadowing and less concrete, so if the Jia Family was in decline when the time arrives, Xue Bao Chai marrying would not be such a reach.
