Chapter 92 – Qing Transmigration Tale

When she opened her eyes again, she was in the nutrition pod again. The bed of the pod was very comfortable. This was the benefit of an upgrade in treatment. Lin Yu Tong was not in a hurry to leave. She needed to calm her feelings.

“Are you okay?” Gao Ming’s voice was full of worry.

Lin Yu Tong coolly responded. Gao Ming’s hand reached over, wanting to pull Lin Yu Tong up.

“Welcome back.” Still the same words.

Lin Yu Tong wanted to gather her energy as customary, but then she found it so laughable after she did it. She could only reach with a hand and get pulled up by Gao Ming.

Looking at Gao Ming who was just as capable, Lin Yu Tong gave a stiff smile.

“Rest for a few days. You will not last if you continue like this?” Gao Ming looked at Lin Yu Tong’s face and cautiously asked.

It was pretty unbearable.

Lin Yu Tong moved her body and asked, “What about the medicine recipes this time?”

Gao Ming’s smile could not be suppressed. “While not even a tenth have been proved, the tenth’s value is unable to be estimated.” Then Gao Ming whispered a question, “Are you going to continue?”

Lin Yu Tong was stunned. What if she did not continue? Right now, even if she was given a thousand gold, ten thousand gold, she could not live the life of a normal person. The emptiness in her heart could not be eased by anything but work. She always hoped, maybe she could encounter the people from the past.

Gao Ming nodded in understanding. Everyone had such a period.

“It is fine, right now, I do not even know who I am? I feel that I am not real,” Lin Yu Tong sat on the sofa, leaning back and said.

Gao Ming hummed in agreement and said, “The real life is too short compared to your experiences. Even your friends and relatives in the real life seem to have grown distant.”

Lin Yu Tong nodded and said, “Yes! Too distant.”

“Go see them, find yourself and then come back,” Gao Ming suggested to Lin Yu Tong.

Lin Yu Tong nodded and stood up. When she walked out of the room, she frowned at the noise outside. She had lived in Spirit Vulture Palace for decades. There, it had been very peaceful and much better than the noise here.

Gao Ming grimaced behind her. This was the side effect of the job. Many people returned and were very unaccustomed.

The company was full service now, and the car was right at the building.

The car was in the middle of traffic, and the air made Lin Yu Tong feel like she was going to vomit. She felt that she did not know how she had lived here for years.

“This is not the way home.” Regardless of how long ago Lin Yu Tong felt it was, she could not forget the way to her home.

The company driver said with a smile, “Yes, Miss Lin, the company switched your parents to a larger place.”

Lin Yu Tong was shocked and then did not speak.

The company paid this, because they wanted something in return.

When the car entered the house area, Lin Yu Tong thought it was bad. Such a great investment, and urging her back to work. It appeared that the mission this time was not easy.

A house of three levels, and there was a swimming pool. Compared that to the three bedroom apartment in the family housing.

While the things she had brought back were much more valuable than this, they had not been put into production, and no revenue had come.

Her dad was still the same, her mama still just as nagging as usual. To them, their daughter had just not come home for two weeks. Honestly speaking, two weeks was very short, nothing compared to not coming back home for half a year when she was in university.

“I heard you did something great for the company, so they rewarded you a house. This company is very good,” Mama Lin said with a smile. She naturally was happy her daughter had done well.

“They even send doctors and nurses to visit to inspect our health regularly. There is also a housekeeper. Do not worry and just work,” Papa Lin instructed.

“Next week, they have arranged for us to go on vacation with the families of the other workers of the company.” Mama Lin served her daughter some food and said with a smile, “You have to work well for them.”

Lin Yu Tong returned home and experienced the considerate care of the company. Just after two days, her parents urged her back to work.

“Such great benefit, work hard.”

Lin Yu Tong helplessly went back to the company.

There was a saying that if you did not bear to risk your child, you would not be able to catch the wolf. She did not know what the company had planned.

Gao Ming stood under the building, waiting for Lin Yu Tong with a smile.

Coming to the office, the two sat down. Lin Yu Tong said, “What do you want me to do, just tell me directly.”

Gao Ming looked at Lin Yu Tong and coughed. She said embarrassedly, “It is like this. The company has detected a new area. However, we do not know what kind of place it is, and need to send someone there, and collect some data. The company feels that after averaging all the different indicators, you are the most suitable.”

Lin Yu Tong raised her eyebrows. “I am the most suitable? I do not feel so.”

Gao Ming handed Lin Yu Tong a document. Lin Yu Tong took it and learned what it was.

This was the server’s record of the ripples from the different world, and the transcripts with her fellows who had come back from these places.

The more she read, the more she did not know whether to laugh or cry.

Some men wanted to create empires or their harem. The result, not many ended up well.

Some women flirted with men all over, others farmed in wuxia worlds, and some even gave up on returning.

“You see, even in the worlds that people are familiar with, such great ripples have been made. Then what in the unknown situations? You have gone there. Changes cannot be avoided, but when one does not know the rules of the world, one can only be moderate. If they keep on making such major changes, the data will not be stable. They will go, but be unable to return. If a conservative one is sent, they may not be able to collect any usable data. So, the company has to be cautious,” Gao Ming said.

“You cannot be too unreliable, what if I end up in the dinosaur era? There has to be a range,” Lin Yu Tong asked.

Gao Ming said, “It may be a parallel history world, not too far off. Of course, this is just the guess of experts.”

Experts? Who believed in experts now?

Lin Yu Tong raised her eyebrows. “History and novels are two different things.”

Gao Ming nodded. “So, I do not dare to let……” She tapped the document and said, “These rash people to go. Being cautious of unknown things will always be correct. The things you have brought back show that you are able to survive in any situation. This is why the company has chosen you. Do not worry, after this time, the company will put a hundredth of the original stock under your name. After this, you will be a stockholder of the company.”

Lin Yu Tong looked at Gao Ming’s hopeful gaze and nodded. As long as she would not go to prehistoric times and have to live in caves.

Gao Ming sighed and said, “This time, I will prepare history books for you.”

Lin Yu Tong laughed in scorn and said, “History is written by people. Who knows what the real world is like? If one just reads the history books to live, they will die.”

“I am not worried with you thinking like this.” Gao Ming’s expression relaxed.

“The transmission will not have problems?” Lin Yu Tong asked.

“Do not worry about this. If the technology was not mature, we would not dare to have people do tests like this,” Gao Ming promised.

“Then let’s go.” Lin Yu Tong put the resources and supplies that Gao Ming gave into her pocket space and stood up.

This time, the nutrition pod had been upgraded again. Lin Yu Tong nodded in thanks to Gao Ming and laid down. When the doors close, the countdown started, “Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one……”

Lin Yu Tong felt everything turn black, and then a pain like she was being torn apart. This had not happened the last two times. She just knew the promises of the company were BS. Lin Yu Tong did not know how long the pain lasted before she landed.

Before she opened her eyes, she smelled a faint fragrance.

The fragrance was elegant and refreshing, not something an ordinary family could be able to use.

Lin Yu Tong’s first feeling was very good, not a prehistoric world.

Then, she heard someone whisper by her ear.

“Physician Li, how is our princess consort’s health?” This was the voice of a middle aged woman.

Wait a moment, she said fujin!1

This was a term used in the Qing Dynasty. Lin Yu Tong first sighed in relief. The inner compound was not as free as Spirit Vulture Palace, but it was safe. Also, the mission this time was to collect data. As long as she managed to survive, the space would collect data on its own.

“Just a bit tired, rest well.” This was the voice of a man who was not young. It must be Physician Li.

“The Eldest A-ge2 is like this right now, how can our princess consort rest?” the woman said.

The two moved outside as they talked. Lin Yu Tong heard the words “eldest a-ge” and her heart suddenly hurt. This was the instinct of the original.

Lin Yu Tong suddenly sat up. Her body was no one else except the Fourth Princess Consort Ulanara. This eldest a-ge should be Hong Hui who passed prematurely in history.

Just as her mind cleared, she heard rushed footsteps. “Princess Consort…… Not good…… The eldest a-ge……”

Lin Yu Tong immediately jumped off the bed, her body so weak she almost could not stand.

The servant girl came in and supported her. She said, “Eldest A-ge is not well…… Princess Consort, do you wish to visit?”

“Take me there!” Lin Yu Tong ordered coldly. This was the only tie the original had. Also, she could not just watch a child pass away like this.

When Lin Yu Tong arrived, other than a thin man standing with his hands behind his back, everyone else in the room were kneeling. On the bed was a small and thin child whose face was already blue.

Lin Yu Tong went and took the child’s pulse. This was not poison, but a plague. He only had a breath left. If she had internal energy, she could ease the child, but what to do now?

She could not take out things from the pocket space in front of so many people!

“Leave! Leave!” Lin Yu Tong scolded. “Quick, all of you, leave.”

The servants in the room all looked at the man.

“Princess Consort! Ye3 knows you……” The man looked at Lin Yu Tong. As he spoke, his voice choked up, and he could not keep talking, his eyes turning red.

When Lin Yu Tong met the man’s red eyes, she was unable to speak.

But what to do about the child about to breathe his last? Even the modern medicines would not work in time. She secretly took out the Nine Turn Restoration Pill from her pocket space. The pill medicine had such great effect that the child could not endure it at all.

Lin Yu Tong pretended to cover her mouth with a handkerchief, and swallowed the pill. Then she bit her own finger, and when the blood spilled out, she shoved her finger into her child’s mouth.

The child did not know to swallow. She used her other hand to secretly press on the child’s meridian point, and the blood mixed with the spit to slowly go down.

The people in the room were stunned. What was the princess consort doing?

The man looked at Lin Yu Tong. He saw that Lin Yu Tong was staring at Hong Hui, he also walked over. After a long time, the throat seemed to move.

He also bit his own finger and presented it.

Lin Yu Tong looked in confusion at him. What was he doing?

The man said, “If parents can use their own blood and flesh to trade for their son, they will all be willing. Hong Hui is Ye‘s son.”

Lin Yu Tong suddenly realized. She had been confused in her panic. This was the fourth prince, the future Emperor Yongzheng.

Luckily he thought this of what she had done. Otherwise, she would not have a way to explain.

Slowly, Lin Yu Tong felt heat on her finger, and then looked at the man who should be called Si Ye.4

She saw that his expression was bewildered, and then joy flashed through his eyes. “Su Pei Sheng, call the palace physician in.”

Su Pei Sheng was shocked for a moment, and then dashed out.

He came back in with the palace physician. This palace physician disliked visiting the imperial family for such issues when he had to be the messenger with the bad news for the precious imperial sons and grandsons……

He thought this, but his movements were not slow. He knew the eldest A-ge of the Fourth Beile5 Establishment was not doing well. Even if he was better now, it was likely the dying flash. But when he took the pulse, his expression turned stunned. While the pulse was weak and not yet recovered, his patient would not die for now.

He immediately knelt down and said, “Fourth Prince, Fourth Princess Consort, Eldest A-ge‘s pulse is much stronger.”

Si Ye immediately had a smile on his face. He said to Su Pei Sheng, “Bring a knife.”

Lin Yu Tong watched him slice a cut into his arm, and bleed into a tea bowl.

This…… His blood was truly not of much use.

Lin Yu Tong used the blade he had used and put to the side. His blood was of no effect. If nothing got better, it would mean that only her blood was effective, and then the oddity would be detected. She had to cut herself too.

“Princess Consort…… No need……” Si Ye was about to stop her, but Lin Yu Tong cut herself without even blinking, and then filled half of the tea bowl.

The servants in the room were frightened when they watched this scene.

Su Pei Sheng hurriedly reminded the palace physician. “Quick, bind up the masters’ wounds.”

“Ah? Ah!” The palace physician immediately opened his box.

Lin Yu Tong mixed their blood together, gripped the child’s chin, and poured it in.

Then she let the granny by her side bandage her up.

She sat by the bed, her hand on the child’s wrist, constantly observing the child’s pulse. Si Ye sat on a chair by the side. When it was dark and lanterns had to be lit, Hong Hui grunted on the bed.

The sound was like a heavenly song. Lin Yu Tong immediately relaxed. She felt her sight darken, and she was unable to sit still.

Si Ye stood up and ordered Su Pei Sheng standing at the side. “Call the palace physician again.”

Su Pei Sheng wanted to kowtow to all the gods. If the eldest a-ge was fine, everything was good.

Recently, because of the sudden illness of Eldest A-ge, the masters had been very worn down.

The palace physician took the pulse, and saw the blueness of the eldest a-ge had faded. He just looked a bit pale.

“Eldest A-ge is fine now,” he said carefully, “he just has to recover well. It is like they say, the sincerity is such that even the heavens are moved. It is Fourth Prince and Fourth Princess Consort’s merit.” While he said such things, he was very shocked inside. If not for the fact that all the physicians in the Academy of Imperial Medicine had visited, he would think that he had made the wrong diagnosis.

“Reward!” Si Ye ordered. “Reward the entire establishment!”

Lin Yu Tong ordered the granny next to her and ordered, “Reward!”

Just as they finished, Hong Hui coughed from the bed, and slowly opened his eyes.

Eniang,” the child’s voice was thin and weak, “I feel unwell!”

Lin Yu Tong suddenly realized that this “Eniang” was calling her. While she had two children in Red Chamber, and loved them, she had lacked the satisfaction of caring for a child.

This child was still young. Maybe it was because of the unconscious thoughts the original had left behind that she felt very close to him.

Si Ye’s lips were smiling. The child knew to say he felt unwell, able to feel unwell, it meant he was better. Today, his heart had gone up and down. Now, he finally relaxed.

“Bring water,” Lin Yu Tong ordered the servant girl as she picked Hong Hui up. “Unwell, do you feel unwell in your mouth? Rinse your mouth, it will be fine soon.”

Yes, his mouth tasted full of blood.

Hong Hui closed his eyes, and let Lin Yu Tong feed him water and rinsed before he said, “Eniang, I am hungry.”

Si Ye was overjoyed. “Quick, bring the meal.”

Lin Yu Tong took over and said, “Ye, I want to bring Hong Hui back to the main yard first to be able to take care of him better.”

“That is good!” Si Ye clearly stilled for a moment. Then he took the child from Lin Yu Tong’s arms. He said, “I will see you back.”

The granny hurriedly knelt down, and put shoes on Lin Yu Tong’s feet. Lin Yu Tong suddenly realized that she had come out in such a rush she had not put on shoes.

In the main yard, Lin Yu Tong put Hong Hui on the bed in the warm room, and called people to bring porridge. She secretly added water from the pocket space before feeding Hong Hui. Watching him eat half a bowl, Lin Yu Tong took his pulse again. Seeing that his pulse was calm, she knew that he was mostly fine.

Watching the child sleep, Lin Yu Tong came out. She said seeing that Si Ye was still there, “Have the kitchen cook something that replenishes blood. Ye, eat some.”

Si Ye looked in surprise at Lin Yu Tong and acknowledged. He said, “I will rest in the front tonight. If anything is the matter, have them call me. You rest early as well.” Then he looked at her arm and ordered the servants, “Serve the princess consort and Eldest A-ge. If anything happens, Ye will skin you all alive.”

The people in the room fearfully responded.

Lin Yu Tong watched Si Ye leave and went to the warm room. Right now, it was deep in autumn, and the warm room was very warm. She sent off the servants and then she laid on the bed before she accepted the memories of the original.

Ulanara could not be said to be a fine beauty, her appearance could only be described as delicate and clean. When she was thirteen, she married the fourth imperial son Aisin-Gioro Yin Zhen. It had been several years.

A young husband and wife. Even if they did not help each other out in humble situations, then they would treat each other as a guest.

Rather than say the two were husband and wife, they were more like superior and junior, and as more and more women appeared in the establishment, Fourth Princess Consort’s attention was placed on the inner courtyard. Even to her son, she was more authoritative and not very close to him. She had sent the child to the front courtyard early, and only had the grannies and eunuchs to look after him.

This was a mother who hoped her son would be accomplished. Without the favor of her husband, the only thing she could guard was her status as princess consort and her only son.

Lin Yu Tong drank the water of the spring and dazed out leaning against the soft pillow. If this truly was a parallel world, then why had the company sent her here?

To see if history could be changed? To see the consequences of the changed history? This probably was what the company wanted to know.

Right now, she had changed history. If Hong Hui lived, as long as he did not do foolish things, then there was really nothing for Hong Li.6

She had just arrived, and she was not able to judge if this was a historical world or not.

But regardless of where, she had to live healthily. Lin Yu Tong took the pulse for this body. Other than too many emotions, there were no great problems.

She sat down cross legged and started to practice her martial arts. But after meditating for a night, the effect was not even a hundredth of what it was in the Heavenly Dragon world.

This may be due to her body’s talent, or that even this world innately did not have the conditions for people to practice great martial arts.

She had been used to living with martial arts. Now that she did not have martial arts, she was not used to this, and it was a bit disappointing. She could only comfort herself, it was not important. Just the martial art moves were enough to protect herself.

Also, she dared to say that in this world, no one else was better than her in medicine and poison.

With such skills, not just in the inner courtyard, even in the jianghu, she could achieve things.

After practicing for a night, the effects were not good, but there was some. At least, she was refreshed. In the morning, Lin Yu Tong got up early.

The granny she saw yesterday was the wet nurse for the original. Lin Yu Tong saw her come in and said, “Put away these flower-pot shoes. In the future, when receiving guests or going out, I will wear them. In the rooms, I will not wear them.”

This was like wearing high heels at home, very awkward.

Granny Fu looked in surprise at Lin Yu Tong and said, “Did Mistress’s foot get hurt yesterday? Let this old servant look, should the palace physician be called for?”

Lin Yu Tong shook her head. “It is fine. You look over Hong Hui and call Shi Liu to help me wash.”

“Yes!” Granny Fu hurriedly responded. She kept on feeling that the princess consort had changed somehow.

Yesterday, Lin Yu Tong had seen how the original looked like and she was a bit disappointed. She was just in her twenties, but she dressed herself in a very old-fashioned manner. No wonder she was not favored. Which man was not a visual creature?

She washed up, and looked at her face in front of the mirror. In the imperial family full of beauties, this was too ordinary, and did not have anything special about it. Of course, all the princess consorts were about the same.

But she could dress herself even more pleasingly, at least so she did not find it displeasing.

She had the servant girl flip through her wardrobe. Only the clothes from several years ago were barely enough to get by. The rose red robe, a yellow upper garment, no gold or silver. She just put her hair up in a bun, and secured it with a pearl hairpin. This was all.

She put some lotion on her face, did not even use any powder.

She was not dressing up for anyone.

She personally went to the kitchen, changed all the kitchen had prepared to the water and food from the pocket space and made a meal for Hong Hui and herself.

When Hong Hui woke up, Lin Yu Tong was going to personally bathe him and change. “We will sweep away the bad luck.”

Granny Fu said, “How about changing out the things in Eldest A-ge‘s courtyard?”

“If so, it will not be done now. Right now, Hong Hui is temporarily living in the main courtyard. We will discuss this later.” Lin Yu Tong felt that the people around the Fourth Princess Consort, this Granny Fu and the servant girl who had come running in a panic yesterday, were not smart people. She had to slowly switch them out, giving them respectable positions. It would be better than keeping them with her.

If the things in Hong Hui’s courtyard were switched out, was it not clearly saying that Hong Hui’s illness was fishy? While she did not know how Hong Hui had gotten the plague, major movements right now would only anger that fourth prince.

From his attitude towards Hong Hui, he also cared about this son. She believed that he would thoroughly investigate Hong Hui’s matter. For her, before she was familiar with the situation, would try to not expose herself.

Who knew if this was the true Qing history or a projection of Qing transmigration. Lin Yu Tong did not believe in the so-called experts of the company at all. She only believed what she saw with her own eyes and felt in person.

A child of eight was a big child now. Hong Hui was not willing for Lin Yu Tong to help him bathe. “There are servant girls, Eniang, you go out.”

“I gave birth to you, what part of you have I not seen, what are you hiding? Let Eniang see if anything is wrong with you.” Lin Yu Tong just felt that this child was very thin, his ribs showing. “Eat more in the future, look how thin you are.”

Hong Hui did not have any strength and was not able to dodge, his face flushing red in bashfulness.

Mother and son sat on the bed, porridge and some simple dishes on the bed table.

“Eat the egg porridge.” Lin Yu Tong held a small bowl, going to feed Hong Hui.

“This son is able to eat. After eating, this son has to memorize two pages of the books,” Hong Hui carefully looked at Lin Yu Tong and hurriedly said.

Such a young child and under such pressure. His traditional age was eight, but in reality, he was just six years old.

“Schooling is not urgent,” Lin Yu Tong did not say for him not to study. She only said, “When you recover, we will talk about that.”

Eniang, this son does not do well,” Hong Hui said in a low voice.

Lin Yu Tong thought of Ulanara always telling Hong Hui to do well, fearing that his younger brothers would be better than him. After Hong Hui was Hong Yun, just eight months younger. She had pressure on her, and she transferred the pressure to her child.

“How have you not done well? Eniang‘s Hui’er has done well.” Lin Yu Tong said with a smile. “Quick, eat. Eniang made these for you.”

The egg porridge was made with the spring water, and very delicious. Hong Hui ate a bowl, and then drank half a bowl of rice porridge before he was full.

When the servants took the table away, Granny Fu came to report, “The princely lady7 and the gege8 have come to pay respects to the princess consort.”

Lin Yu Tong frowned and said, “No! Just say that I am caring for Eldest A-ge and will excuse them coming to pay respects. When I want to see them, I will sent someone for them.” She did not understand others who did not like these women, but had to call them in front of her to add to her depression. Those women may not like bowing and kneeling to other people. Not seeing each other in their lifetime and never interacting was the best.

Just as she finished speaking, Shi Liu came in and whispered, “Ye arrived. At the door, he met the princely lady and Song gege.”

Lin Yu Tong nodded, and just as she stood to welcome him, she saw a figure in gem blue robes walk in, lifting the curtain.

Ye has come.” Lin Yu Tong stood up.

“Greetings to A-ma.” Hong Hui wanted to get off the bed.

Lin Yu Tong hurriedly stopped him. “You child, this is your own a-ma, why be so polite? Lie down.”

Si Ye nodded. “Listen to your Eniang.”

Then Si Ye examined Hong Hui’s face. “Call the palace physician to visit again in a while.”

“Good!” Lin Yu Tong nodded. This was something to do.

Si Ye waved a hand for the servants to leave. Then he said, “Princess Consort, Hong Hui’s illness has come strangely and left even more strangely. Yesterday, many people were met, and the news likely has spread. Today, Ye has to enter the palace, and tell the emperor. Ye believed in the Buddha since young, and in these years, have not stopped……”

Lin Yu Tong immediately understood. Si Ye was likely going to push the matter onto the Buddha and she said, “It is the same with this consort, having copied scriptures for more than a decade without stopping.”

Si Ye nodded in satisfaction. “Yes! It is due to the protection of the Buddha.”

Lin Yu Tong saw he had dark eye bags, and he had likely thought the entire night how to take care of the follow up matters. Anything strange was not good. Also, such a matter was very sensitive in the imperial family.

Ye has eaten?” Lin Yu Tong found a topic.

“I will on the carriage.” Then he was moving to stand up.

“Granny Fu, bring the food heated up for Hong Hui,” Lin Yu Tong ordered.

Si Ye frowned and said, “What, Hong Hui has not eaten yet?”

“I have, A-ma,” Hong Hui whispered from the side.

Lin Yu Tong said with a smile, “Eat less but more meals, I want to add another meal for him before noon.”

Si Ye nodded.

The food was simple but delicious. “Who made this, reward them!”

Lin Yu Tong smiled awkwardly and said, “Then this consort will thank Ye for the reward.”

Hong Hui covered his mouth and laughed.

Si Ye looked at Lin Yu Tong and said with a smile, “So Princess Consort went to the kitchen. It must be a great reward. When Ye returns, the reward will be made up for you.”

Even when he was boarding the carriage, he was slightly puzzled. This person had changed so much within a night.

Leaning in the carriage, he fell asleep soon, and only woke up when he reached the palace gates. He felt relaxed all over. He did not think it was due to the meal. He felt that it was because Hong Hui had recovered, the matter was off his mind, so he had relaxed and felt refreshed.

Kangxi had many grandsons, but not many di grandsons. In reality, he did not have attention to manage his sons, especially his younger sons, and much less his grandsons. If Four’s9 di eldest son did not suddenly become ill, and all of the Academy of Imperial Medicine was alarmed, the servants would not have dared to tell him. Hearing that this child was about to die, he even recited a scripture for the child. In his life, too many of his children had died, and he rarely felt sorrow for matters like this.

Unexpectedly, after half a day, the news came back was the child had come back from the gates of death. He had even asked the palace physicians and then learned Four and his wife had fed their child their blood and managed to save their child.

This was a marvel.

Hearing that Four had come, he called Four in.

“Did you have the palace physician visit? Is he better?” Kangxi put down the memorandums in his hand, and pointed to a chair on the side for Four to sit.

Si Ye sat down and said, “Khan A-ma, yesterday, he ate half a bowl of porridge. This morn, he ate half a bowl of porridge and a bowl of egg porridge. This son and subject talked to his eniang before leaving, and he had enough energy to laugh at the side. He likely is fine.”

Kangxi saw that Four was thinner and had eye bags. He said, “Have Zhen take a look, how is your arm?”

Si Ye rolled up his sleeves. It was possible to see the blood seeping out from the bandage. “When this son became an a-ma, this son finally learned how Khan A-ma feels towards your sons. Looking at Hong Hui lying there, this son wants to take his place. Thinking of how worried Khan A-ma was every time we were ill in childhood, this son learned just how unfilial this son was.”

Kangxi heard him and sighed. He said, “You, as the a-ma wants to save your son. Zhen, as your a-ma, also cares for my sons. Let your wound heal. When it is healed, come back to your position.”

Si Ye said, “This son and subject caused Khan A-ma worry. This son will pray for Khan A-ma in the future for your holy health.”

“Oh?” Kangxi could not help but ask, “It seems that this is because you believe in the Buddha?”

“This son and subject’s princess consort has copied Buddhist scriptures for more than a decade. There must be some cause.”

Kangxi nodded. “Regardless of why, it is the blessings of the ancestors that the child is fine.”

“Yes!” Si Ye did not know if the emperor believed it or not, but this was the only explanation.

Leaving the palace, Si Ye did not delay. He guessed that the people who were going to visit were going to arrive soon.

He requested several palace physicians to visit Hong Hui. Other than giving some prescriptions to nourish the body, there was not anything else.

Si Ye’s heart finally landed.

“For the next two years, Hong Hui will not leave the establishment for now, and stay here,” Si Ye ordered.

It was for Hong Hui to hide from the attention.

Lin Yu Tong nodded. This was very good. Before having the ability to protect himself, it was better to stay quietly in the establishment.

Just as they were talking, Granny Fu came in, “Princess Consort, the soup is done.”

So unobservant!

“Will Ye stay and eat together?” Lin Yu Tong said politely.

In reality, it was more like a notice for him to leave.

“Then serve the meal.” Si Ye sat at the front of the table, not uneasy at all.

Lin Yu Tong suddenly understood. In this establishment, he was the heaven, and never felt that he was being disdained.

She actually felt awkward eating together with an unfamiliar man. But she did not dare to show any other expression. For Lin Yu Tong who had been carefree for half her life, she was not able to get used to this at all.

Hong Hui looked a bit nervous. Lin Yu Tong did not feel well. Father and son were like a cat and mouse. This could not continue.

This child’s personality had to be corrected.

Translator Ramblings: Footnotes galore since we are heading into stuff with actual history.

Table of Contents

  1. The first/primary/di wife of an imperial Manchu prince.
  2. Literally meaning prince. The pinyin transliteration is “age”. In an official context, it refers to the son of the emperor or imperial princes who have rank. Imperial sons are referred to as A-ge before they are endowed with their official princely titles.
  3. Meaning master, or “lord and master”, in general use a suffix to a title, ie wangye (prince), laotianye (god), yanwangye (king of hell). Here, ye is an illeism, third-person descriptor, used by high ranking males. Within the Manchu, it is used as a general term of honor to refer to a male.
  4. “Si Ye”, si means four, and ye for prince, as fourth prince. However, the novel constantly uses “Si Ye” as the name, and it is so frequently used that it will be kept in this form. However, the other princes will be referred to by their number + prince, ie San Ye = Third Prince.
  5. Beile is the third-ranking title of twelve for Manchu nobility, below qinwang (prince of first rank, prince of blood), and junwang (prince of second rank, commandery prince). The term was originally used by the Jurchens to refer to chiefs.
  6. Hong Li is the name of the fourth son, the one who becomes the Qianlong Emperor.
  7. Manchu princes were allowed to have one official wife, the fujin or princess consort, and one or more cefujin or princely ladies. These princely ladies were a step above ordinary concubines in that they were enoffed by imperial edict/the Ministry of Rites, recorded in the imperial family geneology and had their own uniforms.
  8. gege is a term that is used in different ways. The first, gege is a title for daughters of emperors and imperial princess, meaning princess/lady in general, similar to how A-ge means prince/lord. The daughter of a beile by the consort will have the title of Duolun-gege, a commandery lady. In this present case, gege is used as a general term for concubines, lower in rank than the consort and the princely ladies.
  9. Parents may refer to their children by seniority, and the same with the siblings. For example, they would call the third eldest “lao san” or “Old Three” or “Third”. It is not appropriate to directly replace such a term with “Third Prince” because that implies a kind of formality. Rather than use “old” in front of the numbers, just the numbers will be used. So “lao si” becomes “Four.”
